During the interwar years, British evangelical women began to promote African women as worthy of friendship and equality. These representations differed not only from Victorian images of African women, but also those popularized by interwar secular writers. This article argues that the two most prolific female missionary writers of the interwar period, Mabel Shaw and Cicely Hooper, promoted these positive images while working as educators of African women. As feminists, these evangelicals valued African women, and as adherents of fulfillment theology popularized in ecumenical missionary discourse, they admired features of African culture that they believed were divinely inspired. By the late 1920s, these missionary women generated even more favourable images of African women, as they feared Western materialism was disintegrating African home life. Thus, this article demonstrates the liminal position of missionary women tethered to audiences in Britain, Africa, and the growing ecumenical Church. It also points to the importance of the interwar years as a key period in which ideas about race, gender, and culture were being reworked. While these missionary women did not erase boundaries of difference between themselves and African women, they invited Britons to join them in building cross-cultural, cross-racial friendships.

As a part of a larger research project on single women, an analysis was conducted of three television series of Quebec origin whose protagonists were single career women in their thirties (i.e. Tout sur moi, Les hauts et les bas de Sophie Paquin and C.A.). With sexual agency, sexual script theory (Gagnon and Simon 1973) and Bozon's (2001) intimate orientations as a theoretical framework, representations of the women's sexual lives were identified. The female characters adopted a wide variety of female sexual scripts in addition to some typically masculine scripts. Notably, they often initiated encounters and sexual contact. Two of the female characters showed signs of an “individual desire” intimate orientation, while the remaining character's orientation fit the “sexual network” type. Each nevertheless maintained aspects of a “conjugal sexuality” intimate orientation. While these television series present their female protagonist with multiple partners, they do so without confining them to the role of “easy woman” or other stereotypes. These series suggest that representations of the sexuality of single Quebec women are changing.

The present article takes an interest in the situation of girls who appeared before the Montreal Juvenile Delinquents' Court and who were sent to the Good Shepherd of Angers institutions from 1912 to 1949. Our analysis will mainly focus on the concept of incorrigibility used to bring some delinquent girls before the Juvenile Delinquents' Court, and to justify their institutionalization. By analyzing the trajectory of some of these incorrigible girls, we want to seize the concerns at the origin of this institutionalization process and we shall describe the forms of treatment which were privileged to handle these girls in the Good Shepherd of Angers institutions.

AbstractThe contemporary frontiers of Albania and of post-war Kosovo are dangerously exposed to the new humanitarian geopolitics, because the humanitarian is solidified by invoking the right to interfere, the sense of temporal urgency, and the need for immediate action. Humanitarian intervention is seen as a technical means of consolidating national sovereignties by means of the language of global governance, but, paradoxically, it in fact signals the mileposts of the erosion of national sovereignties. Mobile sovereignties have emerged in the wake of humanitarian intervention. These establish the implicit rules of transnationalism that manipulate local elites, institutions and governments engaged in asymmetric negotiations. The aim of this paper is to call attention to new forms of domination established by a series of « supra-colonial » practices.

Examining works by three artists, this article discusses whether their sensationalist strategies and transgressions reflect a postfeminist misrecognition of privilege and evasion of identity politics – or a third-wave feminist analysis of potential complicity in the very systems under critique.

The phenomenon of migration has always existed, over time taking various forms, depending on the economic, social, political and cultural reality. The approach to this issue aims to identify the factors that contribute to the emergence and propagation of the phenomenon of migration, in its complexity, focusing on the opportunities for criminal exploitation of the vulnerabilities of migrant persons. Illegal migration for the purpose of human exploitation constitutes the main link in the network of organized crime, human trafficking and migrant trafficking representing forms of cross-border crime that are difficult to fight in the absence of an adequate legislative framework. The criminal dynamics vary according to the generating factors. Considerable proportions are registered regarding the female dimension, followed by the age dimension. Victims are subjected to multiple forms of exploitation, such as sexual exploitation, labor exploitation or begging exploitation, of which sexual exploitation is the one that represents the largest share. The present study consists in analyzing the vulnerabilities of migrants in the context of crisis or emergency situations, such as the armed conflict in Ukraine and the regional crisis generated by it.
