16.More information
In France, the events in Portugal began to come under the spotlight on television news in 1969 and then regularly from late 1973 to spring 1975. From January to April 1974, a dozen in-depth news reports on television newscasts and newsmagazines informed the public about the crisis in Portugal. How did the “free” French press perceive and decipher the socio-political history unfolding in censored Portugal during these years of crisis? To what extent did media depictions interact with history? This article will explore the ways journalists and special correspondents observed events, and will analyse the depictions of developments in Portugal on the television programs Point-contrepoint, Magazine 52 and Au Rendez-vous des grands reporters. While these French television newsmagazines were media objects covering political and social events in Portugal under the yoke of the Salazar dictatorship and press censorship, they also illustrate the positions which divided the French media and French intellectuals on the topic of anti-colonial struggles.
