The town archive of Compiègne, especially the minutes of meetings (BB) and account books (CC), offers plentiful and consistent evidence concerning religious and secular drama from 1450 to 1550, but earlier historians have mentioned or quoted the material only in part. The present study provides the integral publication of sixty-two items, of which thirty-three were entirely unknown, as well as a tentative synthesis, based on a critical assessment of earlier research. The records make it possible to verify and specify various hypotheses on the financing and other material aspects of the spectacles; they shed new light on the rôle and social status of participants and on the various organisational stages, from the initial decision to the payment of subsidies granted by the town council. The theatrical life of Compiègne consisted of frequent but rather low-key spectacles, and both the management and the audience remained essentially local. One figure did emerge at the end of the period: a “player ” from Compiègne named Jean Jennesson, whose career perfectly exemplifies the transition from amateur theatricals to a more professional activity.

AbstractAfter many years of silence, the Algerian War (1954-1962) is presently gaining more and more political importance, thus confronting France with its responsibilities during the fight for sovereignty that once opposed it to Algerian nationalism. During its 8 years, every stage of a « dirty war » was attained : disinformation, propaganda, murder, torture, collective massacres, etc., as one can read in historical and literary works. However, while several authors have been inspired by this historical period, very few have made it the main subject of all their writing. The analysis concentrates on Azzedine Bounemeur – the Algerian author most devoted to the cause of the Algerian war – who, apart from fiction, presents a chronological and highly epic history of Algerian nationalism.
