The pursuit of anti-oppressive, cross-racial research has become ubiquitous in educational settings. Although some attention has been given to the complexities such an endeavor involves, more intricate and profound aspects that undergird such projects are revealed when examined through the lens of an ethic of hospitality. Based on a case-study focused on the experiences of Black refugee students in Manitoba, this article deconstructs the research journal that I kept throughout that project. Four overarching and intertwined themes are evidenced and discussed: the methodological decisions I had to make along the study, personal ambivalences experienced, feelings of powerlessness, and the (explicit) implications of my White identity. As such, the research journal here analyzed not only reveals the aporetic nature of hospitality but also several ethical complexities involved in the pursuit of hospitable, anti-oppressive research in a cross-racial setting, which have not received enough attention in current literature.

This study proposes to present a very singular case, analyzed here for the first time. In 1966-1967, the French painter Jean Vimenet embodied, for Mouchette, a film by Robert Bresson, one of the main roles, that of the gamekeeper Mathieu. From the trying experience of the filming will be born, in the form of drawings, canvases and painted stones, what Vimenet will call the "portrait of a film". This series, unique in the history of modern and contemporary painting, questions the dialectic that is established between the film work of Bresson and the graphic and pictorial work of Vimenet. Beyond that, it engages us to understand the transmutations and aesthetic codifications that will be born. Vimenet, in "searching" for Bresson, discovers "the fantastic world of cinema never approached in painting". His quest pushes him to reconnect with the old problem of the representation of daylight, modified by the presence of powerful modern projectors. And, focusing his work around the gaze, the eye, the shot, the composition of the frame and chromatism, he ends up pictorially exposing all of Bresson’s mechanics. From the third eye to cinematographic rhetoric, from force and form to light and colour values, and as if echoing certain remarks by Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Aumont, the two disciplines observe each other like opposing statues.

We begin with inequalities: the health of the planet and humanity depends on our ability to reduce them. Inequalities lead societies into interrelated crises: environmental, climatic, energetic, agricultural, economic, social, and public health. While certain individuals and groups are disproportionately more affected than others, everyone at all levels of society suffer from negative impacts of inequalities. To improve our understanding of these inequalities, we focus on two main areas: the population and the way in which it consumes the planet; and adaptation to stresses, in particular those induced by socio-environmental problems caused by our global socio-economic system. Our contribution is twofold. First, the articles together highlight the need to better understand the complex sources of inequalities, which we group into four main categories: information; issues of power; good intentions for development and their adverse effects; and systemic questions, particularly those related to land. In addition, there is a need to understand the socio-environmental challenges that arise from inequalities, which are: those related to scientific knowledge; linked to dynamic nature of diverse situations; concern implementation of projects that aim to reduce inequalities; surrounding obstacles; and other challenges that involve issues of vulnerability and justice. Based on these understandings, our second contribution is the exploration of some solutions, examined from local, national, to global scales. Systemic solutions at different scales are integral to tackle inequalities, in order to achieve a more equitable and just world.
