2014 — Image segmentation applied to volumetric measurements on centrifugal microfluidic platforms in motion
    Abstract

Read more

2014 — Wave propagation methods for the experimental characterization of soft biomaterials and tissues
    Abstract

Read more

2014 — A multifaceted approach to examining emotion regulation in medical settings
    Abstract

The ability to detect and regulate emotions is an important aspect of emotional intelligence (Mayer, Salovey & Caruso, 2000) that can benefit individuals in their personal well-being and improve social interactions. This thesis examined emotional regulation (ER) in medical students as they participated in an international technology rich learning environment designed to help them learn how best to communicate undesired news to patients (Lajoie et al., 2011). Gross' (1998) process model of ER served as the theoretical model that guided the analysis of regulatory strategies, in a case study (Yin, 2011) of four medical students. An exploratory mixed methods approach …  Read more

2014 — The identification of persons with epilepsy in a population-based cohort
    Abstract

Estimating the prevalence and incidence of epilepsy in the absence of physician assessment is challenging. In Canada, the incidence of epilepsy is unknown while two reports of the estimated lifetime prevalence are based on a subject’s response to a single unvalidated question to screen for epilepsy. The Canadian Longitudinal Study of Aging (CLSA) is a nationwide population study of 50,000 people aged 45-85 years at baseline which presently also relies on a similar unvalidated question to identify persons with epilepsy. The purpose of this research is threefold: (a) to systematically review non-physician administered screening tools reported in the scientific literature designed …  Read more

2014 — Lagrangian coherent structures in three-dimensional steady flows
    Abstract

The subject of this thesis is the detection of Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCS) in three-dimensional steady flows. LCS are influential material surfaces that act as skeletons of observed mixing patterns in a dynamical system. We review recent variational results for the construction of LCS in two-dimensional flows, and develop our own numerical implementation of these methods. We first test these implementations on two-dimensional examples, in which we obtain some new results and insights. Next, we apply the two-dimensional variational theory to the two-dimensional Poincaré map of a three-dimensional steady flow. For the Poincaré map of the classic ABC flow, we …  Read more

2014 — Exploring 'ownership' of conflict: legal wrongs in a new world order
    Abstract

Read more

2014 — Hepatic iron metabolism: studies on the regulation and function of Serine Protease Inhibitor clade B3 and Hemojuvelin
    Abstract

In the human body as in all mammals, iron is an essential trace element. Despite its required presence for many biological functions, it is also toxic because of its labile oxidation states and ability to catalyze reactions. For this reason, tight control must be exerted to maintain iron in a bioavailable yet redox inert state. Also since mammals possess no regulated iron excretion mechanism, the dietary uptake of the metal must be tightly controlled as well. This ensures that there is enough iron for the body's needs yet not too much as to result in iron overload and the complications …  Read more

    Abstract

The nuclear lamina is a mesh-like layer of type V intermediate filaments that is tightly associated to the inner nuclear membrane and plays numerous essential roles in the cell; structural scaffolding for the cell nucleus, regulation of gene transcription, cell-cycle progression, DNA- damage response, nuclear envelope breakdown and nuclear pore complex organization. The main protein isoforms constituting the nuclear lamina are lamins A, C, B1, B2 and B3. Post- transcriptional phosphorylation of lamin proteins on either serine or threonine sites have been shown to cause turnover of the protein. 2014 — Hierarchical transformations of sensory inputs along the primate dorsal visual pathway
    Abstract

The dorsal pathway of macaque visual cortex is involved in the processing of motion signals that are useful for perception and behaviour. This involves multiple stages, with each stage integrating information from its predecessors. Along these stages, motion information is first measured by the primary visual cortex (V1), which sends specialized projections to extrastriate regions such as the middle temporal area (MT). Previous work with plaid stimuli has shown that most V1 neurons respond to the individual components of moving stimuli, while some MT neurons are capable of estimating the global motion of the pattern. The observation of this pattern-selectivity …  Read more

Read more

    Abstract

In the last few decades, the world of electric machine design, specifically induction machine design, has been reinvigorated by the introduction of power electronics. Where designers were once limited to a single alternating current waveform with constant voltage and frequency, power electronics have thrown all those assumptions out the window. The change has necessitated new design methods that go beyond the typical induction motor electrical equivalent circuit seen in every textbook for the last century and have sent designers back to first principles. With that sentiment, early induction motor invention and improvements are explored. It is shown that even though …  Read more

2014 — The development of self-definition and relatedness from adolescence through adulthood
    Abstract

Self-definition and relatedness are fundamental personality developmental tasks that engage individuals across the entire lifespan (Blatt, 1974, Blatt & Luyten, 2009; Luyten & Blatt, 2013). Healthy psychological maturation requires the development of a sense of self that is differentiated, integrated, and positive, and the ability to form close interpersonal relationships that are mature, intimate, mutually satisfying, and reciprocal. A failure or delay in the development of self-definition contributes to the development of a personality trait labelled self-criticism, whereas a failure or delay in the development of relatedness contributes to the development of a personality style labelled dependency. 2014 — Role of the pRb/E2F pathway in TGF beta-mediated tumour suppression
    Abstract

Tumour formation is characterized by a series of well-defined events that occur in virtually all human cancers, including the ability of cells to attain immortalization, sustain proliferation and evade apoptosis. These cell growth and cytostatic processes are normally regulated by various growth factors that act in concert to maintain proper cellular homeostasis. As a result, deregulation of these growth factor signalling pathways leads to uncontrolled cell growth and tumour formation. In particular, transforming growth factor-β (TGFβ) exerts a central role in preventing tumour formation in virtually all cell types and tissues. TGFβ tumour suppressive effects are mainly illustrated by its …  Read more

2014 — Transport phenomena in vacuum bag only prepreg processing of honeycomb sandwich panels
    Abstract

Honeycomb sandwich panels offer an extremely lightweight solution for aerospace structures. As efficiency demands increase, low-cost non-autoclave manufacturing solutions are sought for honeycomb and other composite structures. Vacuum-bag-only (VBO) manufacturing is one possible solution that relies on vacuum to remove all entrapped volatiles prior to cure, and then the differential pressure between the inside and outside of the vacuum bag consolidates the layers during cure. This technique can be very effective for monolithic laminates made with out-of-autoclave (OOA) prepregs, but honeycomb structures introduce two additional manufacturing nuisances. First, the core entraps up to 98 % of its volume during lay-up, …  Read more

2014 — Capicua regulates proliferation and survival of RB- deficient cells
    Abstract

The retinoblastoma tumour suppressor, Rb, is a cell cycle regulator that acts to prevent the progression from G1 to S-phase. Rb regulates this transition by inhibiting E2F family transcription factors which control the expression of genes required for the G1 –S phase progression. Consequently, mutations in rbf1, the Drosophila homologue of the Rb tumour suppressor gene, generate defects in cell cycle control. In an effort to identify genes regulated by the EGFR/ras pathway that co-operate with mutations of rbf1 we singled out a gene called Capicua, an HMG box transcription factor that regulates growth in Drosophila. 2014 — The identification and characterization of EWS as a telomerase-associated protein
    Abstract

Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein complex responsible for immortalizing 85% of all human malignant tumors, making telomerase regulation a very attractive target for the development of anti-cancer therapeutics. Thus far, many proteins have been identified that regulate human telomerase biogenesis, activity, trafficking, recruitment and degradation. By comparison, there have been very few proteins identified to associate with mouse telomerase. Due to the importance of mouse models in the development of anti-cancer therapeutics, investigation of mouse telomerase-associated proteins is required to establish a detailed understanding of the species-specific differences between mouse and human telomerases and telomeres. Moreover, understanding telomerase and telomere regulation …  Read more

A standard way to cope with these problems is to design an algorithm that outputs an approximate solution and still runs in polynomial-time. Although a decent solution can sometime be found, many of the natural problems that we encounter, e.g., the maximum independent set and graph coloring problems, resist almost every approximation algorithm. In fact, assuming P <> NP, there exists a barrier that prevents us to get arbitrarily close to an optimal solution. Thus, understanding the limit in which one can find an approximate solution is an important subject …  Read more

Receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) are transmembrane cellular receptors that respond to growth factor stimulation and promote cellular proliferation in normal biological processes, such embryogenesis and wound healing. RTK activation and signalling are tightly regulated processes; their dysregulation promotes unrestrained cellular proliferation and is associated with cancer initiation and progression. As such, RTKs are targets of many therapeutic strategies for the treatment of cancer. However, despite initial success, both innate and acquired resistance hinders the efficacy of many of these inhibitors. Active signalling by the Met RTK plays a role in melanomas, osteosarcomas, breast carcinomas, gliomas, non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC), …  Read more
