2014 — Principles of statistical chemodetection in heterogeneous, intermittent environments
    Abstract

Read more

2014 — Neuronal populations involved in prenatal response to hypoxia: cFos expression in late-gestation chick embryos
    Abstract

The study of prenatal hypoxia using chick embryos has benefited our understanding of the physiology behind prenatal hypoxic responses, but also has unharnessed potential for illuminating brain mechanisms orchestrating these responses. Therefore, the aim of this project is to perform a comprehensive examination of the effects of hypoxia on brain activity of late-gestation chick embryos, as measured by cFos expression, a marker of neural activation. Immunohistochemistry was performed on brain sections taken from Embryonic day (E)18 chick embryos (hatching occurs at E19-E21) that had been subjected to 4 hours of either normoxia (21% O2), mild hypoxia (15% O2), or medium …  Read more

2014 — La polilla de Madrid
    Abstract

La polilla de Madrid is a composition for chamber ensemble that is based upon a direct translation from text to music of the homonymous short play by Francisco de Quevedo (1580-1645). Using several translation techniques, I have produced an aural version of this play, a wordless chamber opera retaining the dialogic structure of the original, while transfiguring its characters and situations into the sonic plane. As the piece develops, the ensemble – comprised of flute, oboe, clarinet in B-flat, baritone saxophone in E-flat, cello, percussion, guitar, and piano – divides itself into various sub-groupings to portray specific characters, each possessing …  Read more

2014 — Serotonin modulates electrosensory processing via 5-HT2 receptors in the weakly electric fish «Apteronotus leptorhynchus»
    Abstract

Read more

2014 — Understanding public policy through mass media
    Abstract

Read more

2014 — Detecting convoys in networks of short-range sensors
    Abstract

Detecting groups of vehicles traveling together as a convoy is an important problem in military and law enforcement applications. License plate recognition sensors are an emerging technology which can be used to solve this problem. The sensors are deployed throughout road networks across the world and meta-data about the vehicles passing in front of each sensor is collected. These provide discrete, irregularly sampled, time series information about where vehicles are traveling. This thesis proposes a method to solve the problem of detecting convoys utilizing irregularly sampled time series information about objects moving between sensors. The system presented in this thesis …  Read more

2014 — Kinematic analysis of a stickhandling task in ice hockey and the effect of stick inertial properties
    Abstract

Stickhandling tasks in ice hockey are varied, making quantitative analysis difficult. Thus little data concerning the kinematic movement patterns are available. This study examined one controlled task commonly used in training development (puck cycling through a “figure-8” route about two static obstacles) to address how skill level and the inertial properties of the stick might influence a repetitive stickhandling task. Twenty-seven male subjects were recruited in order to evaluate the difference between skill level and stick inertial condition. A 3D optoelectric motion capture system was used to record the movements of the puck and stick. Though two techniques were expected …  Read more

    Abstract

The Lost Hammer (LH) spring, located on Axel Heiberg Island in the Canadian High Arctic, is the coldest and saltiest terrestrial spring discovered to date. It is characterized by perennial discharges of subzero temperatures (-5°C), hypersalinity (24% salinity), along with reducing (≈-165 mV), microoxic, and oligotrophic conditions. It is rich in sulfates (10.0% w/w), dissolved H2S/sulfides (up to 25 ppm), ammonia (≈381 μM), and methane (11.1 g d-1). The LH spring system contains the outlet and the outflow channel. In the initial study of the LH channel sediment, the results determined the microbial abundance by using fluorescent microscopy in the …  Read more

    Abstract

Read more

2014 — The importance of combining neutron diffraction and 155 Gd Mössbauer spectroscopy in resolving the magnetic structure of Gd-intermetallic compounds
    Abstract

Determining the magnetic structures of lanthanide intermetallic compounds is of crucial importance in understanding the nature of interactions within these materials. Two commonly used techniques for determining magnetic structures are powder neutron diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. These two techniques are particularly difficult to apply in the case of gadolinium-containing intermetallic compounds due to the large neutron absorption cross section of natural Gd and to the large line overlap observed in 155Gd Mössbauer spectroscopy. In this work we show that it is possible, with proper analysis of crystallographic symmetries and high quality data, to determine the magnetic structures of Gd-intermetallic compounds. Abstract

We study lattices arising from ideals in cyclotomic fields. We begin with some general theory about lattices. We introduce certain important lattices, namely the root lattices and the Niemeier lattices. We then describe how to obtain lattices using ideals in number fields and we determine some of their basic properties. We continue our study by specializing to cyclotomic fields. We determine all the root lattices and all the Niemeier lattices that are similar to ideals in cyclotomic fields as well as all the cyclotomic fields in which they can be obtained. We give many examples and even a few examples …  Read more

2014 — Black holes and toy cosmologies in higher spin gravity
    Abstract

This thesis studies some consequences of including massless higher spin fields to gravitational theories with a cosmological constant, in three and four dimensions. We first review the construction of higher spin gravity theories in Anti-de Sitter (AdS) and de Sitter (dS) spacetimes. We use these theories to both test and expand the holographic duality known as the AdS/CFT correspondence. This duality relates the bulk gravity to a conformal field theory (CFT) on the asymptotic boundary of the spacetime. We then analyze the matter content of the three-dimensional theories, and present an argument to single out a higher spin structure in …  Read more

2014 — Property and ambiguity on Missisquoi Bay: 1760-1812
    Abstract

Between 1760 and 1812, the fertile lands around Lake Champlain's Missisquoi Bay were bisected by an international boundary. During this intense period of settlement, these lands were also subject to competing claims by various individuals, states, empires, and Native nations, all of who used grants, leases, surveys, and titles to further their claims. However, this copious property creation did not result in a coherent landscape, governed by authoritative states. Instead, participants used competing titles and overlapping grants to negotiate a spectrum of territorial claims. In many cases, the political, geographic, and economic ambiguities of property were seen as opportunities, rather …  Read more

    Abstract

Gel electrophoresis is recognized as a technique to separate nanoparticles based on size, shape and surface charge, and a means to study nanoparticle physicochemical properties. In this thesis, we first developed an electrokinetic model for bare charged sphere electrophoresis in polyelectrolyte hydrogels, addressing the importance of hydrogel permeability and fixed charge. The model identified parameter space where asymptotic approximations in the literature are accurate, and provided strategies to improve nanoparticle size separation by manipulating parameters, such as gel permeability and ionic strength. To interpret gel electrophoresis of polyelectrolyte coated nanoparticles, a theoretical model on soft sphere gel electrophoresis was established, …  Read more

Inherited mutations in DNA repair genes are major contributors to familial cancer syndromes. Most pathogenic mutations introduce premature stop codons resulting in the loss of protein function. Missense variants of uncertain pathogenic significance are also often observed. In an attempt to understand the physiological attributes of this category of variants, this thesis analysed two recurrent coding variants using a multi-disciplinary approach. The first variant, PMS2 c.2002A>G, was identified in the Inuit population of Quebec and early onset cancers co-segregate with homozygous status. The second, BRCA2 c.6853A>G, appears to be restricted to the Ashkenazi Jewish population and is frequently recorded in …  Read more

This thesis presents an automated topological design system for low frequency electromagnetic devices, e.g. an interior permanent magnet motor. The automated design is carried out through a topological shape optimization process: first, the system employs a topological sensitivity analysis to examine the design domain and to determine the optimal topology (distribution of source and materials); second, the system uses a shape optimizer to further improve the design; these two steps are performed alternately until the optimality condition is satisfied. The robustness of a topology with respect to small variations on its geometries is studied and a robustness measure is defined, …  Read more

2014 — Suggestion modulates deeply ingrained processes
    Abstract

Behavioural scientists typically classify cognitive processes as either controlled or automatic. Whereas controlled processes are slow and effortful, automatic processes are fast and involuntary. Cognitive researchers have recently begun investigating how top-down influence in the form of suggestion can allow individuals to modulate the automaticity of deeply ingrained processes. The present thesis surveys a background of converging findings that collectively indicate that certain individuals can derail involuntary processes, such as reading. We extend previous Stroop findings to several other well-established automatic paradigms, including the McGurk effect. We thus demonstrate how, in the case of highly suggestible individuals, suggestion seems to …  Read more

We attempted to address this by using allele-specific analyses of gene expression and chromatin marks assessed in diverse populations of human cells. The first chapter of this thesis is a review of the literature. The second chapter describes an allele-specific (AS) expression study we performed using 4 large population cohorts of human cells. We mapped SNPs associated to differential allelic-expression (AE) of protein coding and non-coding (nc) …  Read more

During maturation in the ER, protein folding and modification by ER chaperones and foldases is necessary for proteins to reach their native conformation for biological function. However, under both pathological and physiological conditions, proteins may fail to fold or may be persistently misfolded. This is potentially harmful. If misfolded proteins accumulate, ER homeostasis is perturbed and the result can lead to a situation known as ER stress. Furthermore, if ER stress is prolonged or sufficiently severe, it poses a significant threat to cell activity and …  Read more

2014 — Characterization of the endogenous axin-based complexes and regulation in the Wnt pathway
    Abstract

Wnt-β-catenin signaling is a major pathway controlling gene transcription, cell cycle and cell fate determination. Deregulated Wnt signaling has been implicated in many human diseases, particularly cancers. The key step in the pathway seems to be the switch from constitutive degradation of β-catenin to its stabilization and transport into the nucleus. Axin is a scaffold protein that recruits many components to build what has been called the β-catenin destruction complex. Wnt activation appears to inhibit the function of the complex, but despite intensive investigation, the actual regulatory mechanism remains unclear. Our lab has established a new cell fractionation method that can …  Read more
