2024 — In vivo impact of alternative polyadenylation on PTEN/PI3K/Akt signaling
    Abstract

Polyadenylation is a mRNA maturation process that involves the addition of a poly(A) tail after a polyadenylation signal (PAS) located in the 3’-untranslated region (3’-UTR) of pre-mRNAs. Alternative polyadenylation (APA) is the production of varying 3'-UTR isoforms of an mRNA using distinct PAS in pre-mRNAs. Studies show that cancer cells use shorter 3’-UTR APA isoforms. Several authors predict that this global shortening of 3’-UTRs contributes to cancer development, a theory that is challenged by the fact that 3’-UTR shortening also occurs in healthy proliferative cells through APA. This raises the question of whether 3’UTR shortening is a cause or an …  Read more

2024 — Engineering tough blood clots using biorthogonal chemistry for temporary embolization
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — Development of modular syntheses towards chiral hydrazide catalysts and investigation of organocatalytic claisen rearrangement reactions
    Abstract

This thesis describes efforts toward iminium ion catalysis of the Claisen rearrangement with a diazepane carboxylate catalyst developed within the Gleason group and illustrates a modular synthetic approach towards chiral hydrazide catalysts.Previously in our group, we have applied a diazepane carboxylate catalyst in iminium ion catalysis of various reactions such as the Cope rearrangement, the Diels-Alder reaction and polyene cyclizations. Inspired by our success in organocatalysis of these reactions, and others, we sought to apply the diazepane carboxylate catalyst to the Claisen rearrangement. The Claisen rearrangement is a [3,3] sigmatropic rearrangement in which a single bond is broken and a …  Read more

2024 — “ȣtiskȣagamimȣ, il parle algonquin”: Waganakising Odawa lifeways in Pierre-Luc Du Jaunay’s Dictionarium Gallico-ȣtaȣaku(m), 1740-1765
    Abstract

This thesis aims to explore evidence of Odawa lifeways, or elements of daily life and sustenance practices, in the Waganakising Village during the 1740s from phrases related to agriculture, hunting, and mobility in Father Pierre-Luc Du Jaunay’s (c. 1705-1780) Odawa-French dictionary titled Dictionarium Gallico-ȣtaȣaku[m] (1740). Father Du Jaunay missionized among Odawa in Michilimackinac from around 1735 until 1765, following the community to what the French called the L’Arbre Croche region situated along the Northwest coast of Lake Michigan around 1741. Du Jaunay’s influence remained in the generational memory of the same community from the 1740s until the 1830s. This lasting …  Read more

2024 — The Montreal Sheltering Home: Registering Architecture, Gender, and Class in Montreal, 1870-1910
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — Conceptualizing social policy as development domestically: An exploration of Employment Insurance in Canada
    Abstract

Existing academic literature describes that domestic social program spending is comparable with foreign development aid contributions but no conceptual connection between the two kinds of spending is made explicit by the Government of Canada. This paper analyzes literature on social policy and two international development studies (IDS) concepts - development economics and dependency theory - for conceptual similarities in the Canadian context. The paper then examines the case of Employment Insurance (EI) and Atlantic Canada’s experience with EI. Atlantic Canada was selected as a case because it has comparatively high levels of unemployment and high rates of EI use. This …  Read more

    Abstract

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease characterized by the destruction of pancreatic beta cells. The only current treatment is lifelong intensive insulin replacement therapy. Technological advances in the last few decades have allowed for increases in treatment satisfaction and efficacy both in the sphere of multiple daily injection therapy and continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion therapy. However, all current methods require carbohydrate counting, a widespread prandial bolus management technique, that is both tedious and error-prone and contributes to disease burden. Despite the advancements, most pediatric, and adult populations living with type 1 diabetes fail to reach glycemic targets, particularly of …  Read more

2024 — Where have the teachers gone? A mixed method study of Japanese English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) teachers’ burnout and self-efficacy development.
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — Characterization of extracellular vesicles from red blood cells infected with asexual stages of Plasmodium falciparum
    Abstract

Plasmodium falciparum is an obligate parasite that causes the most severe form of malaria in humans and several aspects of the immunopathology of this deadly disease remain unknown. As such, malaria prevention, control and elimination strategies are impeded. A new aspect of the parasites biology has come to light in recent research which involves the release of extracellular vesicles (EVs) from P. falciparum-infected red blood cells (RBCs). EVs are small membrane bound particles that contain functional biomolecular cargo and serve as a means of communication between and within cell populations. This biomolecular cargo is heterogenous, and largely depends on the …  Read more

Population-level analyses are inherently complex due to a myriad of latent confounding effects that underlie the interdisciplinary topics of research interest. Despite the mounting demand for generative population models, the limited generalizability to underrepresented groups hinders their widespread adoption in downstream applications. Interpretability and reliability are essential for clinicians and policymakers, while accuracy and precision are prioritized from an engineering standpoint. Thus, in domains such as population neuroscience, the challenge lies in determining a suitable approach to model population data effectively. Notably, the traditional strata-agnostic nature of existing methods in this field reveals a pertinent gap in quantitative techniques that …  Read more

2024 — Neurogenetics of active sensing in Caenorhabditis elegans interneurons
    Abstract

In its broad definition, active sensing consists of the integration of all sensorimotor inputs that lead to a specific behavior. Classic examples of it are echolocation used by bats and dolphins to optimally navigate their environment and eye movements in that pair with visual perception in mammals. In the central nervous system, one of the main neurotransmitters, acetylcholine (Ach), acts through nicotinic and muscarinic receptors (mAchRs) to regulate cortical signaling. This Ach-mediated signaling contributes to many cognitive processes and is critical to sensorimotor control. In the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, we identified a small circuit that integrates both sensory and motor …  Read more

2024 — Graph-based strategies for classification with diverse label information
    Abstract

This thesis comprises three interconnected projects addressing challenges in multi-label classification and temporal graph learning. In the first project, we tackle the challenge of modelling label dependencies in multi-label classification. We introduce a graph-based dependency module that is capable of modeling multiple types of relations. The module can be incorporated in embedding-based multi-label classification methods, leading to Relation Guided Message Passing (RGMP), a novel multi-label classification approach. We demonstrate via experiments that the proposed method achieves superior or comparable performance to state-of-the-art methods across all studied datasets, without imposing substantial additional model complexity or computational overhead. This emphasizes the importance …  Read more

2024 — Consenting to Dictatorship? Explaining Voter Behavior and Authoritarian Power Institutionalization in Thailand’s 2019 Elections
    Abstract

Inspired by Thailand’s long-standing struggle for democracy and the middle class’ recent astonishing support for military coups and the pro-regime Palang Pracharath party, this study examines how authoritarian regimes pursue consent from citizens. It argues that although coercion and electoral manipulation are important tactics frequently employed by authoritarian regimes, authoritarian incumbents solidify power and institutionalize themselves during a transition by acquiring consent from citizens. Voter consent bestows legitimacy to authoritarian incumbents, which in turn buttresses regime stability. Focusing on Palang Pracharath’s surprise “victory” in Thailand’s 2019 general elections, this study finds that voter consent stems from three primary sources—the MP …  Read more
