2024 — Build the Synthesis-Property Relationship of Tough Sonogels with EPR and Mechanical Study
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — Does Altering the Lower Height of the Face Affect Our Perception of Personality?
    Abstract

Background: Although we are advised not to “judge a book by its cover”, many of our opinions about others are based on their outward appearances. This is done via impression formation, which is the cognitive process by which individuals form judgments and evaluations of others based on available information, such as physical appearance, behavior, and social cues. Understanding “impression formation”, based on facial morphology, has led to many theories and research in the field of psychology and more recently in orthodontics. More specifically, facial proportions have been shown to play an important role on judgements of appearance. Objectives: The primary objective …  Read more

2024 — Analysis of plastic-related chemical contaminants in human milk using targeted and non-targeted screening
    Abstract

Human milk, which is vital for infant growth and development, may contain various xenobiotics, highlighting the need for its comprehensive biomonitoring on a regular basis. While traditional targeted approaches are widely employed for monitoring contaminants in biological samples around the world, numerous unknown chemicals are often overlooked. Plastic-related contaminants (PRCs), ubiquitous in the environment, represent one of the most extensive contaminants detected in human milk; bisphenols are one of the dominant classes of PRCs that have been studied. Despite the abundance of studies, however, data are lacking with respect to the levels of these contaminants in certain matrices and geographical …  Read more

2024 — Characterizing a novel human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neuronal model of Smith-Magenis syndrome
    Abstract

2024 — Optical interrogation of cortical connectivity and plasticity
    Abstract

Neuronal connectivity determines microcircuit function. The large diversity of cell types in the brain necessitates cell-type-specific exploration of circuit structure to understand brain function. Synaptic plasticity is a critical process that underlies the formation of microcircuits during brain development, as well as learning and memory in mature circuits. Plasticity rules have also been shown to be cell-type specific, this is especially important when one considers the opposing outputs of excitatory and inhibitory neurons. The state-of-the-art method for synapse-specific exploration of connectivity and plasticity has long been paired recordings. This method, while powerful, has slow data yield. Therefore, the field does …  Read more

2024 — Molecular functions of CdGAP in prostate cancer and embryonic development
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — Weight-Adjusted Nonlinearly Stable Flux Reconstruction High-Order Methods for Compressible Flows in Curvilinear Coordinates
    Abstract

To achieve genuine predictive capability, an algorithm must consistently deliver accurate results over prolonged temporal integration periods, avoiding the unwarranted proliferation of aliasing errors that compromise the discrete solution. Provable nonlinear stability bounds the discrete approximation and ensures that the discretization does not diverge. Nonlinear stability is accomplished by satisfying a secondary conservation law, namely for compressible flows; the second law of thermodynamics. For high-order methods, discrete nonlinear stability and entropy stability, have been successfully implemented for discontinuous Galerkin (DG) and residual distribution schemes, where the stability proofs depend on properties of L2-norms. Alternatively, the flux reconstruction method has gained …  Read more

2024 — Mlp60a regulates the development of dendrites in Drosophila.
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — The Effects of Mediator and Enhancers on the Kinetics of Transcription
    Abstract

At most loci across the eukaryotic genome, gene transcription has long been observed to be regulated in a punctuated, burst-like manner. Burst transcription, revealed by single molecule fluorescence techniques, is characterized by promoters being active for brief periods, capable of producing dozens to hundreds of nascent RNAs in a span of several minutes, followed by a long gap of transcriptional senescence ranging from minutes to several hours. Using a simple two-state model of transcription in tandem with smFISH or single-cell RNAseq, researchers can estimate both the frequency and size of these bursts in absolute numbers. A common observation at many …  Read more

    Abstract

Anthropogenic stressors can affect the invasion success and impact of introduced fishes in freshwater ecosystems. Predicting the performance of species subjected to multiple stressors is needed to assess ecosystem vulnerabilities and prioritize species likely to be disruptive. This thesis explores how the ecological performance of cultivated pet store goldfish (Carassius auratus) is affected by exposure to climate warming and chloride pollution via road salt application—two stressors that are increasingly significant in north temperate urban ponds. The goldfish, native to China, is a global invader that is reportedly increasing its distribution and abundance in ponds, lakes and wetlands in Canada, most …  Read more

2024 — Resolving cadherin-mediated inter-cell contractile tension in multicellular migration.
    Abstract

Cell migration plays an important role in physiological processes of multicellular organisms and cancer metastasis. The change from coherent collective cell motion to individual incoherent motion is a key aspect of metastasis. This motivates this study of how stresses are generated, transmitted and coordinated during collective migration of cancer cells. We focus on the role of cadherins located at adherens junctions, transmembrane proteins that mediate cell–cell adhesion and harness the contractile force of the cell via the acto-myosin cytoskeleton. Cadherins are mechanosensitive and mechanoconductive, and are believed to play an important role in cell coordination during migration by enabling cells …  Read more

    Abstract

The poetry of Paul Celan is written in the wake of the Shoah, and every word he speaks bares its traumatic, annihilatory trace. Yet his experience of the lethal nadir of history does not dominate his poetic expression, which is instead directed outwards and forwards into the positive emptiness of a better world to come. Moments of expectancy and salvation, creative and celebratory breaks with the past, and dialogical interfaces with the absent dead venture into the terrain of radical hope, even anticipation of Utopia. There are striking parallels between Celan’s poetry and the writings of Ernst Bloch, the philosopher …  Read more

It is well established that the relationship between muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) and blood pressure (BP), termed sympathetic transduction differs between young healthy males and females. More specifically, although on average females demonstrate blunted sympathetic transduction compared to males, emerging research has identified a substantial amount of inter-individual variability in sympathetic transduction within young females. However, the mechanisms contributing to this variability are yet to be elucidated. Therefore, to address these gaps in the literature, the purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the fundamental properties that contribute to inter-individual variability in sympathetic transduction. Study 1 investigated MSNA reactivity …  Read more

This thesis is an interpretive study of Circonfession by Jacques Derrida. I investigate the relationship between Derrida’s account of mourning the imminent death of his mother and the recurring theme of his religious identity, which he deconstructs. The text is written in response to Geoffrey Bennington’s Derridabase, which is an attempt to systematize Derrida’s thought and make it accessible. Circonfession is composed of 59 stream-of-consciousness periphrases that make several references to different works throughout the author’s career. This makes it difficult to interpret without first referring to “outside” sources. In the first part of the thesis, I follow clues in …  Read more

2024 — When history and museum collaborate: The mobilization of students’ historical consciousness through a virtual museum program about Indigenous history in Canada
    Abstract

This thesis examined the pedagogical value of a museum-based program designed to mobilize the historical consciousness of students enrolled in an Indigenous history course at university. A key concept in history education research, historical consciousness is understood as the ability of individuals to use the past to orient themselves in time, and it can be developed in the context of formal education (Rüsen, 2004). More specifically, the study was guided by Grever and Adriaansen's (2019) proposal for the operationalization of the “effected” historical consciousness (Gadamer, 1963) in education. According to these researchers, the “effected” dimension of historical consciousness requires, among …  Read more
