2024 — Using tourmaline to track boron cycling at the Isua Belt, SW GreenlandAbstract
Read more

2024 — Developing Executive Functions in Adolescence: Practical Applications for Coaching High School StudentsAbstract
Read more

2024 — Defining How Inflammation Potentiates Stress Responses in Response to Metabolic TherapyAbstract
Read more

2024 — Subduction Sandwich: Investigating the evolution and deformation of a subduction plate boundary interface from the overriding to the downgoing plateAbstract
Subduction zones along convergent plate boundaries generate the largest earthquakes and associated tsunamis. Study of exhumed subduction rocks is the direct way to get information about the composition, structure, and rheology of subduction plate boundaries and the deformation in both the upper and lower plates. Plate boundary zones accommodate plate motion through earthquake failure at shallow levels and by aseismic creep at deeper levels. In between lies a zone that shows transitional slip behavior, called slow slip and tremor events, as observed in active subduction zones using geodetic and seismic data. This transitional zone controls the depth at which earthquakes … Read more

2024 — Reflexively Engaging in Studying Childhood Ethics and Agency: Implications for Conducting Participatory ResearchAbstract
Researcher reflexivity in studying ethics and agency in participatory research with children is gaining recognition as a critical area of inquiry. Despite an appreciation of children’s voices, agency, right to participation, socio-emotional well-being, and welfare, our understanding of how these rights are upheld and enhanced in research remains understudied. Although under-explored, Arts-based participatory research shows promise in valuing children’s perspectives and well-being. This study focuses on how, as researchers, we can ethically engage with children's agency, balancing their development with safeguarding their socio-emotional well-being and respecting their cultural heritage and dignity. As an educator and reflexive researcher, I employed various … Read more

2024 — Wind Stress Dependence on Ocean Surface Velocity: Impact on Ocean Energetics and the Mesoscale Eddy FieldAbstract
Read more

2024 — What’s Wrong with This Music? Detecting Errors in Optical Music Recognition Output with Machine LearningAbstract
Optical music recognition is the field of research that investigates how to computationally read musical documents. It offers powerful mechanisms for digitizing physical musical scores into machine-readable forms, enabling researchers to search, analyze, and interact with vast swathes of musical data in novel ways. However, a significant challenge encountered in leveraging this technology is the non-trivial errors it introduces into scores, especially on poor-quality scans or degraded historical musical documents. Manual correction of these errors, essential for analysis and archival, is a time-consuming task. I note that most of the errors these processes induce are ``non-musical'' in that they represent … Read more

2024 — A Hybrid Reverberation AlgorithmAbstract
In contemporary music production, artificial digital reverberation systems have become the prevalent method to implement reverberation effects. The goal of artificial reverberation is to recreate remotely located acoustic spaces and apply them to professionally recorded audio with little to no echo, creating the illusion that the audio was recorded in said environment. Since the advent of digital reverberation fifty years ago, numerous filter-based reverberation paradigms have been developed to produce authentic-sounding reverberation. Since the beginning of the century, there has been a notable preference for employing FFT-based convolutional reverberation. This approach allows for a high degree of realism and consistency … Read more

2024 — Monitoring Prostate Cancer Heterogeneity Through Circulating GenesAbstract
Patient stratification remains an obstacle for the optimal treatment of prostate cancer (PCa). At diagnosis, it is not always clear which patients are at risk of recurrence after curative treatments. The main therapies for recurrent disease target the androgen receptor (AR), killing the majority of AR+ luminal-like cells. Subsets of AR+ cells may develop resistance, while AR-negative neuroendocrine and stem-like populations can emerge. AR remains the main target in metastatic and castration resistant (mCRPC) stages of disease. AR inhibitors and taxanes prolong survival but inevitably fail. Drugs targeting other pathways have been tested in clinical trials, but few have entered … Read more

2024 — Enhancing the stability of railroad ballast with geogrid reinforcement: an experimental and discrete element modeling studyAbstract
Canada possesses an extensive rail network that is mainly supported by ballasted substructures in which a ballast layer lies immediately beneath the rail-tie assembly. The ballast layer performs multiple key functions in a track structure that include supporting the tracks, maintaining their alignment, and transferring train loads to the underlying soil layers. Due to its unbound nature, ballast undergoes substantial deformations when exposed to train loading that disturb the track alignment and compromise the track riding safety. Geogrids have recently emerged as a viable means to stabilize ballast and mitigate its deformations. A geogrid’s ability to reinforce ballast hinges on … Read more

2024 — The Homestretch: Cognitive Effort Exertion in Proximity to a GoalAbstract
One of the most enduring theories in psychology and cognitive science is that of the law of least work—which posits that, all else being equal, organisms will avoid effortful courses of action. Yet, it is clear that organisms do not, in all circumstance, avoid effortful action. Both recent and classical work highlight the human and animal tendency to increase effort exertion near a goal-even when doing so is unrewarded—the now-famous goal-gradient hypothesis. Despite nearly a century having passed since the goal gradient hypothesis was first postulated, little work has examined goal gradient effects in cognitive task performance. That is, it … Read more

2024 — Towards Something ElseAbstract
This thesis is an exploration into something else as it is derived from the ontological basis, experience, eliciting, of a nothing which threatens with each drawing-nearer to explode into a plenum, a continuity, a radical outside. Drawing from both psychoanalysis and affect theory towards the consideration of these terms, something, nothing, and something else, I consider objects of limit experience, or limit objects, such as the “body genre” in pornography, as well as techno music scenes. Chapter One is an investigation of sex: in its capacity for expansivity and generativity; it makes the argument for an alternate politics of consent, … Read more

2024 — Demystifying the role of alternative polyadenylation in cancerAbstract
Read more

2024 — Investigating the prognostic and diagnostic value of anesthetic-induced changes in functional brain network topologies for patients with coma and disorders of consciousnessAbstract
Read more

2024 — Run it Again; Meta-reenactment in Hirokazu Kore-eda's "Afterlife", Joshua Oppenheimer's "The Act of Killing", and Nathan Fielder's "The Rehearsal".Abstract
This thesis investigates three cinematic examples of meta-reenactment to tackle the broad but central questions: why do people reenact? What does it bring to cinematic texts? What does it do for filmmakers, viewers, and reenactors alike? Namely, Nathan Fielder’s show The Rehearsal (2023), Joshua Oppenheimer’s documentary The Act of Killing (2012), and Hirokazu Koreeda’s narrative film Afterlife (1998), are the chosen examples. The texts differ widely in topic, tone, and cultural background, but are connected by the fact that they are interested in “making-of” footage, foregrounding the planning and the aftereffects of reenactment. Their analysis offers a broad but non-comprehensive … Read more

2024 — Low-Power Face Recognition using Joint Optical and Electronic Deep Neural NetworkAbstract
Face detection and recognition are key technologies for human-computer interaction, surveillance, and biometric authentication. However, the trade-off between power consumption and accuracy is crucial for such algorithms running locally on edge devices. In addition, inference latency is an important constraint for real-time systems. In this work, we propose an electro-optic hybrid multi-stage machine learning system for decoupled detection and recognition of faces. The system uses an always-on Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI)-based optical neural network (ONN) to monitor the presence of faces in the environment. The computationally intensive digital deep neural network (DNN) for facial recognition is only turned on once a … Read more

Spatio-temporal infectious disease counts are often subject to abrupt and dramatic changes in behavior associated with different epidemiological events. For example, a disease might go temporarily extinct in an area causing cases to drop to zero for several weeks, or an outbreak might emerge causing cases to rise rapidly. In this thesis, we propose several novel Bayesian coupled Markov switching models to account for these types of shifts in behavior. Our approach in general is to assume the disease moves between different epidemiological periods or states in each area, such as disease absence or outbreak. When the disease is in … Read more

2024 — Investigating the role of neuronal inflammation and senescence in immune-mediated neurodegeneration.Abstract
Neurons are a specialized cellular unit of the central nervous system with machinery to produce and propagate chemo-electric signals. However, neurons can acquire various pathological changes that impede their performance or their homeostatic functions and alter their signaling networks in aging and disease states. In multiple sclerosis (MS), inflammation and demyelination of the central nervous system mediates these pathological changes in neurons, and these changes can likewise be studied in animal models of pathological inflammation induced demyelination such as experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). In Chapter 2, to assess the contribution of senescence in EAE, I identify a senescent transcriptomic signature … Read more
