Carboxypeptidase Y (E.C. 3.4.12.1) was produced from Kluyveromyces fragilis ATCC 28244. The maximum growth and enzyme production were obtained during 24 hr of growth at the late logarithmic phase with optimized conditions (25$ sp circ $C, 300 rpm, pH 5) using YPD (1% yeast extract, 2% peptone, 2% dextrose, w/v) broth medium. A Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography (FPLC) was used for the enzyme purification. The enzyme was purified to 216 fold over the crude extract with a recovery of 18%. A three-year (1991-1993) investigation was done in the field and laboratory to study the bionomics of Smicronyx guineanus Voss and Sm. umbrinus Hustache and the spatial distribution of Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth. Studies on the life history of the weevils were undertaken. Seasonal activity and habits were established by monitoring life stages in the field. A behavioral Time Budget of Smicronyx adults was established in semi-field conditions. Dispersion patterns and the optimum sample size for Smicronyx and Striga were determined. This thesis is a literary analysis of two novels, Comme le bon pain (2001) by Mariama Ndoye and Cendres et braises (1994) by Ken Bugul. It examines the representation of Islam in relation to African women's identity, with particular emphasis on its relationship with the postcolonial context of francophone West Africa. Chapter I reviews the emergence of African francophone literature by women authors and the trends of criticism that developed as a result of it. Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) is a common AM method for metals, particularly in aerospace, due to the complex components that traditional manufacturing methods are able to produce, albeit with difficulty. The presence of the Gulf Stream in the cold season, and a cold air outbreak following a previous cyclone passage are two important precursors of a case of rapid cyclogenesis on 13-14 December 1988. The study showed that a large area of conditional instability in the lower troposphere, and an area of symmetric instability primarily over the sea, coinciding with small values of isentropic potential vorticity below the 290$ sp circ$K level were associated with strong surface heat fluxes. This dissertation proposes an interdisciplinary approach for the study of the timbre of the classical guitar. We start by identifying the static; control parameters of timbre, relating to the structural components of the guitar and the dynamic control parameters of timbre, relating to the gestures applied by the performer on the instrument. From the plucked string physical model (obtained from the transverse wave equation), we derive a digital signal interpretation of the plucking effect which is a comb filtering. Philip Roth's parody of autobiography in the Zuckerman series is part of a larger debate concerning the problems of Jewish art. As Roth manipulates personal and personified autobiography, he both underlines and undermines Jewish traditions of reading and writing. To be sure, Zuckerman's struggle for artistic identity articulates a long-standing Jewish concern with the tensions of collective representation. This study looks at the relationship between immigrants' social network structures, their identities, language status, and trust, to determine if the type of social networks they have is related to information access, linguistic capital, social capital and opportunities for L2 communication. Data was collected via an online survey provided in Spanish, English, Chinese and Arabic, sampling immigrants in Québec who speak a language other than French as their first language. In this dissertation I develop and theorize an approach to Shakespearean character. I focus on the ways in which characters talk about knowing others and being known; in other words, this is an approach to characters who are themselves approaching characters. The plays I treat in detail are Coriolanus and Hamlet. The words characters in these plays use when they explain their decisions, avoid explaining their decisions, talk about others' decisions, or try to expose others' secrets, are often position-and-movement words. The immunosuppressive effect of the graft-versus-host (GVH) reaction was studied in Fl mice injected with parental lymphoid cells. Suppression of the humoral immune response to sheep red blood cells (SRBC) in mice undergoing GVH reactions (GVH mice) was shown to depend upon the strength of the GVH reaction and its duration at the time of sensitization with SRBC. Adrenalectomy and castration of mice prior to the induction of a GVH reaction did not reduce the immunosuppressive effect, suggesting that immunosuppression results from immunological factors rather than from a general stress response. This thesis investigated the nature of gesture and its relation to speech in deaf and hearing French-speaking children between the ages of four and six. Although the spoken language of the two groups was not different, significant differences were found in the amount and kinds of gestures produced. The deaf children produced significantly more gestures, and a higher proportion of iconics, than the hearing controls. The deaf children were systematic in their use of speech in conjunction with gesture in that they combined iconic gestures with verb phrases and points with noun phrases.
