Urban poverty in the Philippines is strikingly manifested with the problem of street children. The labour of children is significant because of marginal household incomes. This thesis is an assessment of the credit program of one community based Non-Government Organization in Manila. The Family and Children for Empowerment (FCED), attempts to augment household incomes through the provision of low interest loans to women for informal micro-enterprises. The study is exploratory. This study investigated the effects of input enhancement in isolation and in combination with output elaboration tasks on the accuracy of count and noncount nouns and text comprehension in English as a Second Language. Participants were twenty-three Spanish adult ESL learners who were divided into one control and two intervention groups. The intervention lasted two weeks, and learners were required to read materials with input enhancement and to participate in classroom tasks that elicited output practice. The procedures for Clean Steel making require an increase in the rate of separation of non-metallic inclusions from molten steel, and the prevention of fresh inclusions, caused by slag phase entrainment or by reoxidation reactions. The swelling behavior of thin polyelectrolyte multilayers assembled from poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) under various pH and environmental conditions was characterized in real time by in situ single wavelength ellipsometry. Both the rates and extent of swelling were found to be independent of the solution environment, yet they depended strongly on the solution pH under which the layers were fabricated. The role of adenosine in modulating synaptic transmission in the cat superior cervical ganglion was investigated in this thesis. The first study showed that perfusion of ganglia with exogenous adenosine increased their acetylcholine (ACh) content. The effect was reduced by blockade of nucleoside transport, as if adenosine's action was mediated at an intracellular site. Isotopic labelling of the extra ACh with radiolabelled choline showed that the additional transmitter was due to increased ACh synthesis, and associated with increased choline transport. One of the main problems facing mining engineers when dealing with deep, hard rock mines is to prevent and/or reduce rockburst hazard around mine openings. Rockburst is a phenomenon which is characterised by violent rock failure. The current research focuses on the assessment and control of rockbursts in deep, hard rock mines. Strainbursts, or strain-type rockbursts, occur in the vicinity of mine openings and are generally provoked by high stress conditions in a brittle rock mass. Embryonic development relies on programmed apoptosis to shape tissues, particularly in the urogenital system (UGS). Our study unveils the crucial role of non-professional efferocytosis in precisely eliminating apoptotic cells during the remodeling of the common nephric duct (CND), a vital process for UGS maturation. A computational model estimates the epithelial efferocytosis process at approximately 9.3 hours. Further investigations highlight the coordination between non-professional efferocytosis, actomyosin contractility, and apoptosis in driving proper CND shortening. Additionally, our examination of embryonic tissues underscores the universal role of non-professional efferocytosis in clearing apoptotic cells across diverse cell types. A knowledge of the allometry of algal growth and respiration can be applied to biomass-size distribution models which are in turn used in the prediction of fish yield and ecosystem studies. However, most of the social networks rely on some simplistic trust models to manage trust information of the users, which can cause problems ranging from unsatisfied user experience to exposure to malicious users. This thesis develops the finite element formulations and computer programs for modelling the free and constrained inflation of thin polymer sheets in relation to thermoforming applications. The properties of tubulins from Brugia malayi, B. pahangi, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and rat brain were compared. Tubulins from all nematodes and rat brain were partially purified by polylysine agarose chromatography, those of brain also by cycles of assembly/disassembly, and all by taxol-induced assembly. The tubulins were compared with respect to concentration ($ mu$g tubulin/mg soluble protein), drugs binding and isoforms. The tubulins of B. malayi and B. pahangi were similar. However, the tubulin from these filariae were different from those of N. brasiliensis. Even larger differences were detected between the nematode tubulins and those of rat brain. This thesis deals with the control and protection of Multi-Terminal DC (MTDC) transmission systems based on Voltage-Source Converters (VSCs). The MTDC system enables several AC systems to be integrated by way of a DC network. Potential applications of the MTDC system are: off-shore wind farms, city center feeds. This thesis studies the dynamics of two-dimensional cantilevered flexible plates subjected to axial flow and proposes a new energy-harvesting concept, the flutter-mill, utilizing the flutter motions to generate electrical power. The nonlinear model of the cantilevered flexible plate is developed using the inextensibility assumption. The panel method, in particular the unsteady lumped vortex model associated with a dynamic vortical wake, is used for calculating the aero/hydro-dynamic loads acting on the plate. The nature of shape change and aggregation of human and rabbit platelets was assessed by light transmission studies of stirred platelet suspensions and phase contrast microscopy. Platelet shape change and aggregation were differently affected by experimental conditions: pCO(,2), pH and anticoagulants, according to choice of aggregating agents. Optimal physiological conditions were established for functional studies. A new class of potent antithrombotic agents, BL-3459 and BL-4162A, were identified as selective low Km cyclic 3':5'-adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) phosphodiesterase inhibitors.
