This article examines the contested commemoration of the self-taught Digby County painter Maud Lewis (1903-1970) by focusing specifically on the fate of her Marshalltown home. Following Lewis’s death in 1970, the “painted house” became a site of contest between the local community, government stakeholders, and corporate interests. The eventual installation of the house at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax demonstrates that the corporate influence on the AGNS and the history of neoliberal development in Nova Scotia filled the gap in federal and provincial arts funding that would have once provided assistance for such community-level initiatives as the Marshalltown conservation of the painted house.

As customary socio-economic relationships between the inhabitants of Newfoundland broke down, normal patterns of exchange ceased to function during the 18th century. Because the island was a contested space – even in peacetime – existing economic and social connections enabled civilians to choose to resist, collaborate, or flee. While some were ruined, others maintained the status quo, and some even profited from new opportunities. In the end, re-capturing St. John’s was less important for pressing English claims in the area than reconstructing the economy and asserting control over the movement of people and trade within overlapping French and English transatlantic worlds.

This article examines manufacturing productivity differences between urban centres in the Maritimes and Central Canada. The results indicate that productivity in the Maritime cities exceeded that of its Central Canadian counterparts. The article reconciles this finding with earlier research by demonstrating that the relative productivity of the Maritimes at the provincial level is lowered by the higher proportion of rural establishments with low productivity in the region. The article concludes that lower productivity in the rural regions of the Maritimes may have contributed to the decline of the Maritime manufacturing sector.

Three thousand Bricklin cars were built in New Brunswick between 1974 and 1976 with government support before the company went bankrupt.  This article examines the Bricklin as an idea of industrial modernity, reflecting a long-standing thread within national policies around the world linking the emergence of a successful automotive sector to economic and political maturity.  It shows how politicians, policymakers, and the media attempted, through Bricklin, to shape collective and regional identity in order to achieve an industrial modernity that was associated with car manufacture.  Bricklin was far more than a simple car company – it was an attempt to reshape the very idea of a province.

Entre 1974 et 1976, 3  000 automobiles Bricklin ont été fabriquées au Nouveau- Brunswick avec l’aide du gouvernement, avant que l’entreprise ne fasse faillite. DIVIDED INTO FOUR SECTIONS, THIS IS A FIRST-PERSON NARRATIVE of my experiences of identity and the subsequent challenges that I have come to grapple with and reflect upon. The first section will explain my personal identity and will give some background to my life and my formative years. The second section will define my ancestral journey, specifically discussing my great aunt’s genealogical notes and how they are interpreted and blended with my personal experience. The third section follows my spiritual journey and how I came to enter doctoral work. Here I will discuss my hidden and suppressed mixed-race identity and why my extended family’s identity has been elided and silenced. The final section will consider some basic and thought-provoking questions that I am attempting to answer as a person of colour and as a settler of colour on the stolen land called Turtle Island. I conclude with a discussion of how colonization has played a role in creating division and contributes to the fractured relationships among contemporary black and Indigenous communities in New Brunswick.
