L’Empire et les barbares
Gilles Thérien
p. 8–19
The situation of Quebec is analysed from the point of view of the systems of representation used in America and in France — the horizontal mode of continental attachment versus the vertical, hierarchical model. Given that Quebec maintains a problematic relationship with the United States, considered as a land of great strangeness, and has a relationship of continuity and tradition with France, the author shows that the Québécois system of representation is constitued between two unattainable poles, producing a tension that is the motor of its very survival.

The author studies the significance of the presence of a certain "Americanness" in several of the films of German filmmaker Wim Wenders. Americanness can be found in a narrative model in which the story has meaning above and beyond the scenario, the sequence of actions, and the use of city-space, but which confronts the filmmaker's desire to tell a primary story, to recreate temporality, to inscribe a conception of city-time. Thus the concept of Americanness emerges in a duality of points of view and has nothing to do with the director's continent of origin.

Les Fantômes de l’Amérique
Heinz Weinmann
p. 32–42
This is an investigation of the unconscious foundations of America, its past, repressed since the disorientation that Christopher Columbus inflicted on the continent and the genocide of the "Indian" who, as his very name indicates, has no place in the "New World". America's fantasies were carried forward by a film created in the very place where the dream of unlimited expansion of the country came to an end, in California. The American nation is reborn in film. D. W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation reveals how the white man has dispossessed America down to its darkest ghosts.

Figuration du personnage : l’Indien du cinéma américain
Martin Lefebvre
p. 44–59
Américanité, "Americanness", is approached in terms of a way of seeing internal to America itself, as exemplified in a well-defined corpus of film, the Indian film and the treatment of "Indianness" as a form of otherness that informs it. The analysis is based on one film, Milos Forman's famous One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. A study of the elements which determine the identification of this character category reveals that though this film is not a Western, the use of the Western model and of the normative network that can be abstracted from it exhibits undeniable structural links in the way it represents the Indian.

In Quebec, co-production is considered both as simply one aspect of the Americanization of cinematic practices and also as a means to express of a certain "Americanness". This text examines the increasingly "hybrid" space that contemporary Quebec cinema seems to inhabit. An analysis of a number of recent co-productions made in Quebec illustrates the interplay between referents seen as "other" and as "specific" in order to demonstrate the relationship between co-production and "national" cinema in terms of cultural hybridity.

In a study of the critical reception in the five films that Jean Renoir made in the United States between 1940 and 1946, the author analyses the conflict between the Frenchness of Renoir and the American film production system. He argues that the films were poorly received by audiences in France because Jean Renoir had created works with French themes but had used the schematism of American film, producing a combination which could only disorient the French public.

In 1988 the National Film Board launched a feature film series called «L’Américanité» ("Americanness"). The definition of this concept was not unanimous, especially the extent to which it had a continentalist dimension and a relationship to Americanization. An analysis of the films shows that the filmmakers do not share a rigorous or generally accepted understanding of the concept. Some believe that Americanness sounds the death knell for the search for a Québécois identity, while others maintain that this issue remains currently undecided. The films in the series deal with the "here" and the elsewhere, with aspects of American culture that Québécois people either adopt or ones which fascinate them. In looking at these films, Americanness is examined alongside "Québécois-ness", "Native Americanness", and even 88 "Canadianness". The «L’Américanité» series ultimately serves as a very valuable contribution in the search for a concrete understanding of this paradoxical and uncertain concept.

Le Droit du plus fort
Alain-N. Moffat
p. 104–111
Through an analysis of the films in the «L’Américanité» series from National Film Board, the author presents two conflicting views of Quebec society and its relationship with Time. On one hand, the pessimistic view regards History as an foreordained chronology linking the past to the future. On the other, History is seen as the working of memory as a whole, dedicated to the present and to the dissolution of chronology.

Travestissement et paternité : la masculinité remade in the USA
Anne-Marie Picard
p. 114–131
Coline Serreau's film Trois hommes et un couffin is analysed in comparison to Leonard Nimoy's Three Men and a Baby. The author shows how the American version is a "re-vision" of the tender gaze cast by Serreau on the "new men", men born in the wake of the feminist movement and its analyses. The new, non-phallic masculinity illustrated in the French film is totally eliminated and replaced by American patriarchal ideology.

Looking at the field of American Studies (especially in its first flowering in the 1950s) and the newly emergent field of cultural studies, the author argues that both are incapable of dealing with the real complexity of mass cultural production (in this case, American Film in the 1980s) as long as they remain tied to notions of culture as myth, purveyor of meaning, transmitter of theme. The author proposes to understand contemporary culture more as spectacle —the visually gripping presentation of non-signifying sights— and looks at some of the specific ways 1980s film works to inhibit, complicate, deflect interpretation.
