From the first verse of the first Elegy (entitled “Quam misera sit conditio docentium literas humaniores Lutetiae...”) written by Buchanan while he was a young teacher in Paris, the Scottish scholar depicts himself as an unlucky lover of poetry whose passion is impeded by his educational job. Through his fifth Elegy, “Ad Franciscum Oliuarius, Franciae Cancellarium, nomine Scholae Burdigalensis”, the Scottish scholar, then teaching Latin in Bordeaux, becomes the advocate of the Muses in order to obtain from the French Chancellor François Olivier the financial and moral help that classical studies need at the moment. In the first Elegy which testifies a personal experience as well as in the second one which is an “event poem” written for the defense of the Collège de Guyenne, Buchanan adopts the position of the poet complaining that too many difficulties prevent him from living completely and with dignity from his art whereas he embodies a sophisticated way of life, civilization in short. In both elegies, the status of the poet is seen as problematical: George Buchanan uses the topoi of the poet’s representation and of the current situation that is sometimes personal, sometimes shared by his fellow teachers in Bordeaux. Such a situation casts doubt on the poetical vocation of the “Prince of Poets of his time”, so called a little later by the French publisher Robert Estienne.

Dans un article important paru dans The Library en 1969, et intitulé « George Buchanan’s Latin Poems from Script to Print », Ian McFarlane a établi les bases d’une éventuelle édition critique des poèmes de l’humaniste écossais. Enfouis dans les différents manuscrits contenant ses œuvres, la plupart se trouvant à la Bibliothèque nationale de France, on trouve une vingtaine de poèmes de longueurs variées qui n’ont jamais été imprimés et publiés. Certains poèmes sont courts, parfois des épigrammes obscènes, et des satires sur certains aspects de l’Église catholique ; mais d’autres sont de longs poèmes adressés à des personnalités importantes telles que Gaspard de Coligny, assassiné au début du massacre de la Saint Barthélemy en 1572, ou son décrié collègue portugais, Beleago. D’autres sont des œuvres moins satiriques, comme le poème élégiaque intitulé « Omnia vincit amor » dans lequel le poète tente de se libérer de la tyrannie de l’amour, pour admettre en bout de ligne sa puissance conquérante. Cet article propose une analyse de ces poèmes, examine les raisons de leur apparente omission dans les œuvres publiées de Buchanan, et évalue leur importance dans le contexte de sa poésie profane.

Jan Kochanowski, le poète le plus important de la Renaissance polonaise, loue les Paraphrases des Psaumes de George Buchanan dans son épigramme élogieux intitulé Ad Buchananum. Il s’agit du seul ouvrage dans lequel Kochanowski s’adresse directement au grand humaniste écossais. On ne trouve pourtant aucune preuve que les deux poètes se sont rencontrés en personnes. Toutefois, Kochanowski a voyagé en Italie entre 1552 et 1559, et est passé par Paris lors de son retour en Pologne. Les Paraphrases des Psaumes de Buchanan ont profondément inspiré le Psautier de Kochanowski, qui ouvre une nouvelle voie au discours poétique polonais. Il semble d’ailleurs que d’autres poèmes de Kochanowski ont été marqués par cette influence. On note un nombre important de convergences significatives dans les vers latins de Kochanowski, par exemple, dans son Foricenia (une collection d’épigrammes), dans lequel le poète polonais exprime son idéal du « poète amateur de vin ». On trouve la même inspiration dans son Lyricorum libellus, dans lequel se trouve une ode intitulée In equum qui semble avoir été conçue comme la contrepartie de De equo elogium de Buchanan. Parmi d’autres exemples, deux monologues pastoraux de Kochanowski (Dryas Zamchana, Pan Zamchanus) interprétés en présence du roi de Pologne, semblent inspirés par le Pompae deorum rusticorum. Cet article met en lumière ces similitudes, bien qu’il ne soit pas possible de prouver hors de tout doute qu’il s’agit d’un véritable dialogue littéraire ou de l’effet d’un courant humaniste. Néanmoins, ces similitudes pourraient être considérées comme des marques de la communication des idées au sein de la République des Lettres.

In 1561, George Buchanan definitely left France to live in Scotland where he became court poet of the Catholic Queen Mary Stewart, even if he publicly became Protestant. At the beginning, the humanist composed a few epigrams in which the queen is depicted as a good sovereign who restores the Golden Age in Scotland. A few years later, Buchanan depicted Mary Queen of Scots as a tyrant in his Rerum Scoticarum Historia, published in 1582. This article will provide a comparison between Buchanan’s different works (poetical works, tragedies and political and historical works) and show that the aesthetic choices and the references and quo- tations of ancient writers are based on Buchanan’s political thought about the Good King and the Tyrant, as we can read in the De jure regni apud Scotos dialogus, published in 1579.

Le poème généthliaque latin de Buchanan célébrant la naissance de Jacques VI d’Écosse a souvent été évoqué et commenté dans la littérature secondaire des cent dernières années, le plus souvent en raison de sa signification politique, parfois aussi pour ses qualités littéraires. Certains chercheurs l’ont même reconnu comme l’un des poèmes les plus significatifs de l’auteur écossais. Mais à ce jour, aucune étude complète et approfondie ne lui a encore été consacrée : le présent article vise à combler cette lacune, en tentant de proposer une interprétation globale du généthliaque, qui tienne compte à la fois de ses aspects politiques et littéraires.

The Latin genethliac poem celebrating the birth of James VI of Scotland is often recognised as one of the most significant poems by George Buchanan, but it has never been fully analysed so far. This paper ambitions to propose a global interpretation of the genethliac, taking into account its literary as well as political aspects. After replacing the poem in the historical context of the reign of Mary queen of Scots and in the literary tradition of the genethliac poetry, the analysis focuses on three striking features of the poem: the lack of the maiores thematic, the opening prophecy and the portrait of the good king. The article also touches the problem of the double redaction, and gives a first critical edition and complete French translation of the poem.
