1961 — Eros and Aldous Huxley.Résumé
A youthful nun is robbed of her new set of gold and ivory false teeth; a muscular physiologist peddles furiously on a stationary bicycle, ostensibly to make an experiment on the process of perspiration; a dissipated murderer listens with absorption to Beethoven's A-Minor Quartet before he brings about his own death; a dog, hurled from an airplane, "explodes" on a rooftop and causes a violent quarrel; an elderly earl goes on a diet of carp's gut and converts himself into something resembling an ape; a deceased uncle refuses to dissolve into the "Light," and consequently becomes a candidate for reincarnation; … Lire la suite

1961 — A stereotaxic atlas of the brain stem of the cat.Résumé
The object of this work is to provide a morphological guide for the conduct and analysis of experiments carried out on the brain stem of the cat. In particular, the work contains a series of photomicrographic illustrations of the cat brain stem upon which are delineated the major nuclei as distinguished by the classical cytoarchitectural criteria and a set of stereotaxic coordinates referrable to modern adaptations of the Horsley-Clarke stereotaxic instrument. 1961 — The glacial geomorphology and deglacierization of the George River Basin and adjacent areas in Northern Quebec.Résumé
The importance of Labrador-Ungava as one of the main gathering grounds and centres of dispersal of the Laurentide ice sheet, and as the location of the final disappearance of the ice was recognized as early as 1896 with the publication of the reports of the government geologist, A.P. Low. Despite this knowledge the peninsula has received very little attention until recently, due undoubtedly to its inaccessibility, and to the practical difficulties of field research in the subarctic environment. Until about 1945 the studies of glacial geomorphology that had been completed ( with the exception of the early work of Low) …

1961 — Peasant agriculture in Barbados – a sample study.Résumé
The peasant settlement of Orange Hill, in the parish of St. James, lies midway between the highest land in Barbados, and the leeward coast. It is set around the bluff of the second lowest of a series of terraces of marine origin, which are best developed on this side of the island. Sugar plantations which surround the village cover much of this and the lower terrace, gradually giving way near the coast to a high rental resort strip along the shore line. The great majority of the peasant population of Barbados lives in small villages of which Orange Hill is … Lire la suite

1961 — The biosynthesis of nucleoproteins in regenerating rat liver.Résumé
Miescher, who may be regarded as the founder of the knowledge of the chemistry of the cell nucleus, carried out his initial investigations on isolated pus nuclei obtained from discarded surgical bandages. He showed (1) that the nuclear material contained an unusual phosphorus compound which he called ‘nuclein’, and which we now know to have been nucleoprotein. In later studies, he became interested in salmon sperm as a source of nuclear material, and he found that the isolated sperm heads contained an acidic compound which gave analytical figures for phosphorus, carbon and nitrogen corresponding to what is now known as …

1961 — Heat transfer coefficients on longitudinal finned surfaces.Résumé
Tests have been conducted to determine heat transfer coefficients on the surface of fins. The range of Reynolds numbers covered, based on the distance from hydrodynamic leading edge are 1.85 x 105 to 1.43 x 106. Expressions for heat transfer film coefficients based on experimental data have been obtained in terms of fin flow-channel centre-line velocity for the case of fins with a height of 1.5 inch, with spacings of 3/8, 1/2, 5/8 and 3/4 inch, using a film coefficient transducer designed specifically for this purpose.

1961 — The image of god: a study in the theology of Saint Augustine.Résumé
At his conversion, Augustine accepted a system of rational categories with which he believed himself capable of gaining insight into the true nature of reality. At the same time, he considered that God had enabled him to transfer his affections from the inferior things, which are desired through the senses, to those spiritual things which are loved with the pure rational mind.[...] Lire la suite

1961 — The effects of anticonvulsive medication on vestibular function, an electronystagmographic study.Résumé
Rasmussen, T.This study was conducted during the years 1960-61 when I was appointed a Hosmer Teaching Fellow in the Department of Otolaryngology, McGill University, at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal. The original plan of this study was to evaluate the possible effect of some temporal lobe lesions upon vestibular function. It has been reported that a lesion of the temporal lobe may produce directional preponderance of nystagmus to the side of the lesion in response to calorie stimulation. 1961 — Changes in pulmonary function with age in relation to chronic bronchitis and smoking.Résumé
Research in the field of pulmonary function has been moving forward at an increasing pace in the past few years. The major stimulus intensifying this work came from Great Britain where the morbidity and mortality of chronic bronchitis has become the principal health problem. There are very few comprehensive studies dealing with the changes of pulmonary function with increasing age. A majority of the work available for review has involved only one or two specific tests of lung function, or has covered too wide a range of ages, thus making valid comparisons difficult. 1961 — Radial flow without swirl between parallel disks.Résumé
An understanding of radial flow between confined boundaries is of practical importance in the design of, for example, radial diffusers and air bearings. To this end a combined experimental and theoretical study has been made of radial flow, without swirl, between parallel disks using air at incompressible speeds. Emphasis has been placed on the pressure distribution sufficiently far downstream of the channel inlet for the entry conditions to be unimportant. However a study has also been made of the main features of the flow near the inlet, particularly within the annular separation bubble. Lire la suite

1961 — A modified Tamm-Dancoff potential for two nucleons.Résumé
A one-exchange-meson potential is derived using a modified Tamm-Dancoff approximation. This is done within the framework of a static, cut-off theory. It is round that this potential corresponds to that which would be obtained by an appropriate selection of terms in the Brillouin-Wigner perturbation series solution. The transcendental equation for the potential thus formed is then solved exactly; and this is compared with the one-meson- exchange potential of ordinary perturbation theory. Lire la suite

1961 — Some effects of desiccated thyroid, thiouracil, progesterone and testosterone on certain responses of the sexually immature pullet to estrogen.Résumé
It may be regarded as established that exogenous estrogen administered orally or by injection induces increases in the liver lipid, liver crude protein, total liver ribonuoleic acid phosphorus (RNAP) and to a lesser extent, total liver deoxyribonucleic acid phosphorus (DNAP) of the immature fowl. Furthermore, it has been shown that estrogen induces great increases in the serum lipid. This increase in large measure represents an increase in phospholipid and it is associated with an increase in serum phosphoprotein, which is also evoked by estrogen. It is further known that estrogen induces great increases in the level of the serum calcium … Lire la suite

1961 — Geology of the Kiglapait layered intrusion, coast of Labrador, Canada.Résumé
A Precambrian layered gabbroic intrusion about 560 km 2 in area, of the Skaergaard type, crops out on the middle north coast of Labrador. Border zones and a Layered series are recognized, and have the following characteristics and approximate mean thicknesses. The intrusion displays extreme fractionation resulting in larvikite consisting of mesoperthite, fayalite, ferroaugite, and ore as the uppermost differentiate. Mineral variation and differentiation are described by means of quantitative mineralogy. Lire la suite

1961 — Disciples, outsiders, and the secret of the Kingdom: Interpreting Mark 4:10-13.Résumé
The aim of this thesis is to answer the following question: Did the saying about disciples, outsiders, and the mystery of the Kingdom of God originate with Jesus; and if so, what did he intend by it? Phrased in another fashion, this inquiry concerns the authenticity and meaning of Mark 4:11-12. In reality there are two questions, but the latter grows out of the former if the former receives an affirmative answer. Even if the question about authenticity were to receive a negative answer, the investigator would find it necessary to account for the saying, its meaning, and intention, though … Lire la suite

A bit more than a quarter of a century ago it rose to face “the endangering elements” from reformist-modernist group who introduced and carried on the ideas of Abduh and Al Afghani in Indonesia. The N. U. suspected that this group intended not only to lead Indonesian Islam away from the idea and principles of mazhabite teachings, but also to weaken the traditional position of ulama in the ymmat society. The 19th Congress of N.U., which was held in Palembang the latter part of April, 1952, was a decisive one. It turned the page in the history of the development of the N. U. It represented a breaking point in the tradition of the movement which had been held for a quarter of a century. The N.U., until then purely a social, educational and religious Islamic movement, now became also a political party. It now became itself like a miniature structure of Islam which embraces every aspect of Life. Lire la suite

1961 — A study of the sermons of Gerard Manley Hopkins.Résumé
The primary concern of this thesis is the consideration of the sermons of Gerard Manley Hopkins as literature, that is, their style, structure, thought, the sermons as written. These cannot be entirely separated from the main study, but they will be taken for granted from time to time. Lire la suite

1961 — The development of the spelling programme in protestant schools in Quebec from 1900 to 1960.Résumé
The teaching of spelling is an important task because spelling is more than a school subject -- it is one of the most essential media of written communication. If students are to write successfully in school or in later life, they must learn to spell correctly the necessary words of their language. It is through the mastery of spelling skills and principles encountered in childhood that children learn to spell for adulthood. Thus the schools are faced with the problem of having a satisfactory spelling programme to meet the needs of the students in school and in later life. Lire la suite

1961 — Arctic and subarctic lakes, with special reference to the chironomidae.Résumé
Numerous attempts have been made to classify the various types of lentic environments. None of the systems of classifying lakes, whether based on dissolved oxygen, thermal conditions, chironomid larvae or numerous other criteria, has been wholly successful, nor are they likely to be until lakes in the more inaccessable regions of the world are investigated. Welch (1941) wrote, "In fact, I am disposed to view most of them as premature and worthy of little attention." Though the volume of limnological knowledge has increased greatly since then, attempts at classification are still largely premature. Lire la suite

The study of various aspects of the wilt diseases of plants which are caused by fungi inhabiting the vascular systems of the host plants has engaged the attention of a number of research workers for over half a century. Various theories have been proposed to explain the wilt symptoms in several species of plants, yet none can be considered to fully explain how the fungus in the vascular elements causes the plant to become diseased and die. 1961 — Aerodynamic heating of a swept back wedge airfoil.Résumé
Aerodynamic heating of a swept wedge airfoil was investigated in a Mach Number 2.58 flow for various sweep angles. The 2 in. x 1 1/4 in. surface size airfoil was made of stainless steel with a sharp leading edge and a wedge angle of 22.0 degrees. The angle of attack in a plane normal to the leading edge was constant at 5 degrees, the sweep angle varied from 0 to 35 degrees in five degree increments. Forty chromel-alumel thermocouples were welded to one surface of the wedge, in order to measure the temperature distribution of the surface. Lire la suite

1961 — Trace elements in anorthosites.Résumé
The origin of anorthosite has been for a long time a subject of controversy in geological literature. While most geologists agree that anorthosites are igneous rocks produced from a basic magma by some process of magmatic differentiation, others maintain that they are of metamorphic origin. One possible approach to the origin of anorthosites leads through the study of their trace elements. It is well known that some trace elements are typically concentrated in minerals formed in early stage differentiation, while others are preferentially incorporated in the late differentiates. Cyanocobalamin bound to normal human gastric juice (NHGJ) or to guinea pig stomach extract (GPSE) is taken up by guinea pig ileum to a greater extent than unbound cyanocobalamin. Almost all of the cyanocobalamin taken up in the presence of GPSE is removable by washing the intestinal tissue with ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA), whereas the same washing procedure removes only one third of the cyanocobalamin taken up in the presence of NHGJ. The cyanocobalamin which is removed by washing with EDTA may be the same as that which is actively absorbed by guinea pig intestine. Lire la suite

1961 — Experiments on thermochemical methods of producing high temperatures and pressures.Résumé
Exothermic Reactions. The high temperatures sought in the experiments were produced by heat released from exothermic reactions. Two such reactions were used, that of thermite and that of silicon-ferric oxide. Thermite is a mixture of aluminum and iron oxide. Ferric oxide was used in the experiments because its reaction with aluminum releases more heat per gram of reactants than do those of ferrous oxide or magnetite. For complete reaction, the mixture should contain 54 parts of aluminum and 159.7 parts of ferric oxide by weight. Lire la suite

1961 — Mechanisms of the paroxysmal afterdischarge.Résumé
This work was originally undertaken to establish whether there are cells in the cerebral cortex which repolarize at different rates along their length during recovery from a discharge. This property of cortical cells was suggested by the fact that many responses to electrical stimulation of the cerebral cortex could be accounted for by the presence of such differentially-repolarizing cells in the cortex. Of these responses the paroxysmal or epileptiform afterdischarge caused by strong repetitive stimulation of the cerebral cortex seemed a likely candidate for investigation. Lire la suite

1961 — Differential effects of chlorpromazine and phenobarbital on avoidance behavior.Résumé
Chlorpromazine and phenobarbital exert different effects on the avoidance response. Doses of chlorpromazine, too small to markedly affect escape from noxious stimulation, suppress or prevent the occurrence of a trained avoidance response. But phenobarbital, even at ataxic doses, does not produce this decrement. An investigation of this difference might not only elucidate the modes of action of these drugs, but might also throw some light on the mechanisms involved in the avoidance response. Lire la suite

The physiology of catechol amines bas been subject to intensive investigations ever since it was recognized or more precisely postulated that differences exist in the nature and actions of Adrenaline and its demetylated precursor the Noradrenaline. There are indeed few subjects in physiology which have been studied and given rise to more controversies. Part of the confusion which arose was probably due to different nomenclature of authors and compounds studied; part of it was undoubtedly due to the multiplicity of actions and variability of effects under different experimental conditions.
