A theoretical and experimental investigation of cylindrical detonation waves have been carried out. In the theoretical phase of this investigation, the dynamics of the combustion products behind a cylindrical detonation wave is analysed by extending the Taylor-Zeldovich model of the spherical case. Based on the conservation of mass, it is shown that when the reaction zone thickness is not small compared to the radius, a steady detonation wave cannot exist. A study of the initiation mechanisms of a cylindrical detonation wave shows that it must be initially over-driven and for large radius, the Chapman-Jouguet hypothesis is satisfied. A new procedure, the variational method, is proposed for the evaluation of Regge trajeotories from the nonrelativistic SchrOdinger equation. The general region of validity in the L-plane is defined. Using a simplified trial wave function, a number of calculations are then performed for various strengths of an attractive Yukawa potential and the results plotted as Regge curves. In order to check the numerical calculations for large and very small energies, a derivation of asymptotic formulae for each trajectory is also included, together with several tables of resulta. A proton recoil spectrometer designed to measure neutron spectra in the energy range of 50 MeV to 100 MeV has been built. An attempt was made to improve the energy resolution of this spectrometer as compared to other spectrometers of a similar type by using a scintillator as the converter in which the neutron-proton collisions take place. The spectrometer was used to measure the neutron spectra from aluminum, water, and heavy water targets. Because of the low counting rates, the resolution of the instrument was not tested. This work examines the validity of an approximation commonly used to simplify the study of scattering processes at energies above one or more production thresholds. The approximation consists of replacing three particle states by states containing two particles, one of which is a resonance between two of the original three; the resonance is regarded as an ordinary stable particle. The West Greenland coast is a typical fjord region with a considerable development of local deepwater basins. The majority of the West Greenland fjords are of the typcial bottom configuration, with a well-developed threshold at the mouth, which normally rises to within 100 or 200 m of the surface. Such a fjord has been named an "Arctic" type fjord by Stephensen (1916), because the bottom water is arctic in character, having a negative temperature and low salinity. In 1888, de Rey Pailhade for the first time described a substance containing sulfur which he had been able to isolate from yeast in an impure state and he called this substance "Philothion". Hopkins in 1921, iso1ated from yeast cells a low molecular weight sulfur containing substance which he named "glutathione". Finding that the compound gave a positive nitroprusside reaction and contained glutamic acid and cysteine he concluded that it probably was a dipeptide of these amino acids. The purpose of this work is to examine the usefulness of various types of meteorological observations taken from commercial aircraft.Photographs of clouds were taken from routine flights over the southern United States. Samples of some of these pictures are presented. One set taken of a line of thunderstorms is related to a synoptic map and a U.S. Weather Bureau Radu Chart. A time-lapse sequence of convective development is examined with respect to the thermodynamic energies revealed by the appropriate radiosonde ascent. Allothtrombium lerouxi Moss is a comparatively big red velvet mite, approximately 3mm. long, belonging to the family Trombidiidae of the order Acari. A study was made of the 3163 replies to the question of continuity during hailfall on all hail reports obtained from non-trained voluntary observers and by personal surveys during the 1963 hail season in Central Alberta, in order to determine the nature of hailstorms. The hailswath of the July 14 major storm featured very large hail in two small areas, and regions of rain-but-no-hail embedded within the swath. The largest hail was related to several small and intense radar echoes, during the first 22 minutes of their existence. Delayed proton emission has been observed following bombardment of stable isotopes among the elements between nitrogen and silicon using both the external and internal proton beams of the McGill 100 Mev synchrocyclotron. The protons are emitted from virtual states excited by the beta decay of highly neutron deficient nuclides. Charged particle spectroscopy, cross bombardment and reaction Q values have allowed the identification of several new radioactive neutron deficient nuclides as the precursors of the proton emission. Interaction - process analysis has given precision to our concepts and improved our understanding of leadership in the task-oriented small group. For recreational groups, however, this approach is found to be inadequate. The usefulness of the term 'leadership' is questioned and a need is expressed for concepts treating the effect of shared experiences on long-term structural changes. By treating leadership as a collective phenomenon - the 'power structure' - and shared experiences as 'group tradition', one can analyze the behaviour of a recreational group over an extended period. Two distinct theoretical attempts have been made to describe the neutron distribution for the process of π⁺ production in proton-proton collisions at 970 Mev. The OPE and OBE Models both are one particle exchange theories. Trying to extend the former, using its production vertex technique, leads to divergent integrals. However, using in part the perturbation methods of the OBE model, a finite two pion exchange term is realized. This report describes the instrumentation of the recently completed Hypersonic shock tunnel at McGill University. Also included are the results of preliminary testing and calibration carried out on the combustion driver section, the shock tube, and the complete tunnel. The loading system by which the driver gases are metered into the combustion chamber is described, as well as the electrical system used to ignite the mixture. Froth flotation is based on the differences in the physico-chemicalsurface properties of particles of various minerals. It is very seldomthat the mineral to be separated possesses the desirable surface characteristics.Outside intervention is required to alter the natural surface of themineral particles that make up the flotation pulp. The mineral that is tobe floated by attachment to an air bubble must have a hydrophobic surfaceand the rest of the pulp must be hydrophilic or easily wettable. Since Liljestrand's classic work on the O2 cost of ventilation (10) there has been ample confirmation of his finding that voluntary hyperventilation requires more oxygen per litre ventilated than if hyperventilation is CO2 driven at the same frequency and tidal volume (1,6,7,10,13,17,18). Figure 1 illustrates this point graphical1y and shows two families of curves. One (solid lines), representing the oxygen cost of carbon dioxide driven hyperventilation while the other (dotted lines) represents the considerably greater oxygen cost of voluntary hyperventilation at any chosen minute ventilation.
