1966 — Pulmonary mechanics in mitral stenosis.Résumé
The accuracy of measurements of pulmonary compliance in mitral stenosis has been questioned. The values have varied from normal to very low, and there has been a poor correlation between compliance measurements and pulmonary hemodynamics. It has been thought that the large heart may press on the esophagus and cause an artifact in the esophageal pressures. [...] Lire la suite

1966 — Electrolyte changes in the rat after the administration of alginates.Résumé
Sodium alginate has been shown to be an effective agent for selectively binding strontium ions in the gastrointestinal tract of the rat. The importance of this discovery lies in its possible application as a means to remove radioactive contamination from ingested food. [...] Lire la suite

1966 — Diffraction of an electromagnetic wave by the aperture.Résumé
Electromagnetic wave diffraction theories for large circular, rectangular, triangular and hexagonal apertures in a plane screen have been investigated theoretically and experimentally. (Both the intensity and the phase of the electric field at 9.3 KMC are measured). The near field distribution for the circular aperture has been calculated rigorously, and the results used to verify the experimental arrangement. [...] Lire la suite

1966 — A cytogenetic study of the effects of pesticides.Résumé
A cytogenetic study of the effects of 15 pesticides (herbicides: Alanap-3, Atrazine, Banvel D, Cytrol, Embutox E, Hyvar X, Lorox, Monuron, Simazine; insecticides: Endrin, Phosphamidon, Sevin; insect chemosterilants: ENT-50612, Metepa; fungicide: Botran) has been carried out with Hordeum vulgare and Vicia faba. 1966 — Penicillin epilepsy: studies on the blood brain barrier during cardiopulmonary bypass.Résumé
Early in 1965, a series of patients underwent cardiopulmonary bypass for valve replacement (table 1). Prior to this time, there had been no undue incidence of cerebral complications associated with this procedure. However, the first four of these patients demonstrated severe brain damage with status epilepticus when anasthesia was reversed. All but the last case expired shortly thereafter. [...] Lire la suite

1966 — The effect of elevated temperature on the swelling pressure of sodium montmorillonite clay.Résumé
During the development of modern scientific soil mechanics, more attention was paid to the behaviour of clays than to other types of soil (Aylmore and Quirk, 1959; Norrish, 1954, among others). It has been pointed out that physico-chemical factors are important in the prediction of mechanical properties of such soi1s (Rosenqvist, 1962; Lambe, 1960). [...] Lire la suite

1966 — On serum lipoproteins in the rat.Résumé
In the early 1900's, investigators (1-6) using ammonium sulfate for the precipitation of serum proteins established an association of lipids with the serum globulins. Upon acidification of a solution of horse serum globulins half-saturated with ammonium sulfate from neutral pH to pH 3.9, Macheboeuf isolated what is now regarded as the first well defined lipid-protein complex of constant composition (5). 1966 — A comparison of the thyroid follicular cells of young and old rats in the light and electron microscope.Résumé
In scientific discourse aging implies "a determined chain of events occupying a significant portion of the lifespan after maturity" (Birren, 1959). This definition suggests changes within an organism, or object, with time. Another term used quite frequently is "senescence", defined as "a process of unfavorable progressive change, usually correlated with the passage of time, becoming apparent after maturity and terminating invariably in death of the individual" (Lansing, 1951). 1966 — Revascularization of the right coronary arterial system by implantation of the right internal mammary artery into the right ventricular myocardiumRésumé
lnspite of the tremendous progress in the field of cardiovascular surgery within the past few decades, deaths due to heart disease are still one of the top ranking causes. The gravity of the problem and the urgent need for its solution are reflected in the public health statistics of several countries which reveal this disease to be one of the principal causes of death in the adult population. It has been estimated that approximately two thirds of the deaths from heart disease may be traced directly or indirectly to coronary artery insufficiency. Lire la suite

1966 — Hyperlactatemia of hyperventilationRésumé
It has been known since 1916 (1) that hyperventilation in humans as well as in experimental animals produces an increase in blood lactic-acid concentration. This Iactatemia of hyperventilation has not been regarded as a pathological condition that could endanger a patient's life. It is inferred that the condition in man usually is benign and passes off when the cause of hyperventilation is controlled. Huckabee (2) states that this is a form of lactatemin in which "excess lactate" does not occur, i.e., the lactate/pyruvate ratio remains normal, consequently the NADH2 /NAD ratio also is not altered. In other words, this form … Lire la suite

1966 — A comparative study of the female subgenital armature and sperm athecae of Pyrgomorphidae (Orthoptera).Résumé
During its taxonomic history, the family Pyrgomorphidae has had various names: 'Conophori' (Audinet-Serville, 1838, partim), 'Poeciloceridae' (Burmeister, 1840, partim; the correct spelling should be 'Poekiloceridae'), 'Phymatidae' (Burmeister, 1. c.; the correct spelling should be 'Phymateidae' as given by Scudder, 1868), 'Pyrogomorphinae' by later authors (Bolivar, 1884; McNeill, 1896; Bruner, 1900; Rehn 1904; 1907; and others). 1966 — Chains of particles in shear flow.Résumé
Based on the creeping motion and lubrication equations, a theory for the behaviour of a straight chain consisting of a number of rigid spheres in shear flow was developed. When the spheres are in contact with one another, the chain should behave like a single rigid rod; quantitative confirmation was provided at low velocity gradients by experiments with chains of spheres formed in an electric field. At high gradients the chains broke. The periodic stretching of chains with non-zero gap width was in qualitative agreement with the theory. Chains of spheres held together by liquid menisci behaved like flexible threads … Lire la suite
