Some new inorganic and organometallic derivatives of methylcyclosiloxanes have been prepared and characterized by IR, MS and ('1)H NMR. Compounds, {CH(,3)(Br)SiO}(,3) and {CH(,3)(Br)SiO}(,4) were prepared by cleavage of silicon-phenyl bond with bromine at low temperature. The reaction of {CH(,3)(Br)SiO}(,3) with Na(sec-butyl)(,3)BH at low temperature produced the highly reactive trimer, {CH(,3)(H)SiO}(,3). Compounds {CH(,3)(Co(CO)(,4))SiO}(,4), {CH(,3)(Fe(CO)(,2)(eta)('5)-C(,5)H(,5))SiO}(,4), and {CH(,3)(Co(CO)(,4)SiO}(,5) were prepared by the hydrogen elimination reaction of {CH(,3)(H)SiO}(,n), n = 4 and 5 with Co(,2)(CO)(,8) and {Fe(CO)(,2)(eta)('5)-C(,5)H(,5)}(,2). It was also possible to isolate the compound {CH(,3)(Co(CO)(,4))SiO}(,1){CH(,3)(Fe(CO)(,2)(eta)('5)-C(,5)H(,5))SiO}(,3) by reacting {CH(,3)(H)SiO}(,1){CH(,3)(Fe(CO)(,2)(eta)('5)-C(,5)H(,5))SiO}(,3) with a stoichiometric amount of Co(,2)(CO)(,8). Hepatic adrenoceptors were examined in different thyroid states. Activation of glycogen phosphorylase in hepatocytes from euthyroid and hyperthyroid rats was mediated by alpha adrenoceptors. In hypothyroid rats there was a significant beta receptor contribution to this response and enhanced beta receptor-mediated accumulation of cAMP. Responses to glucagon, a hormone which also activates phosphorylase via cAMP, were not similarly affected. The increase in beta receptor-mediated responses in the hypothyroid rat was accompanied by decreased alpha receptor activity as indicated by a marked suppression of phenylephrine-stimulated phosphorylase activation and calcium efflux. Three apple genotypes, Ottawa 3, Malus robusta No. 5, and Macspur (juvenile and adult phases) were successfully propagated in vitro. Normal shoot cultures of Ottawa 3 were obtained only on sucrose medium containing combinations of benzyladenine, naphthaleneacetic acid or indolebutyric acid (IBA), and gibberellic acid. Sorbitol was aprerequisite for growth of meristem tip explants and was most beneficial for shoot proliferation of M.robusta. Juvenile phase Macspur cultures maintained on sucrose medium grew equally well when subcultured on sorbitol and sucrose media, and showed a significantly higher shoot number than corresponding adult phase cultures; shoot proliferation of adult phase cultures was …  Lire la suite

This study examines one facet of the nineteenth-century territorial expansion of French Canada. It analyzes the principal features of the settlement history of the northern coast of the Gaspe Peninsula where colonization did not begin in earnest until the 1830s when the expansion of the Jersey cod fishery encouraged many Baie des Chaleurs residents to move permanently to the easternmost outports of the study area. Between 1840 and 1880, a much larger contingent of landless French-Canadians from parishes located between Levis and Matane, on the southern shore of the St. Lawrence River, settled the remainder of the Gaspe north coast. …  Lire la suite

This study is a comparison of the development of the theories of reification and hegemony in the writings and political activities of Georg Lukacs and Antonio Gramsci during the years from 1918 to 1938. In demonstrating that reification and hegemony were formulated in response to the unsuccessful revolutionary movements in Hungary and Italy of 1919-1920, it becomes evident that the respective theories of Lukacs and Gramsci were meant to constitute critiques of bourgeois cultural domination. The objectives of this research are to assess the impact of prenatal courses on the birthweight of newborns, and on two intermediate variables: cigarette consumption and maternal weight gain during pregnancy. Ninety-eight per cent (98%) of primiparous women giving birth in one of four Montreal hospitals during the nine-month study period, completed a questionnaire during their postpartum stay in hospital. Medical data on mothers and newborns were extracted from the medical records. Women who participated in prenatal courses were of higher socioeconomic status than nonparticipants. The Office of War Information's influence on the portrayal of Japanese-Americans in motion pictures provides an unusual opportunity for a case study of the implementation of a motion picture propaganda policy. OWI's motion picture program included the production and theatrical distribution of government films and the review before release of feature films produced by the Hollywood studios. The OWI policy on Japanese-Americans is examined to show how it called for three conflicting views. The main thesis of this study is that Islam played a role in the history of the Tunisian nationalist movement on two levels. It was considered as a fundamental component in defining the specificity of the Tunisian nation, source of legitimacy of the Tunisian nationalist movement both before and after independence. Moreover, as a fundamental component of the Tunisian "personality", it influenced the mode of communication used by nationalist leaders to mobilize the masses. In twentieth-century poets such as W. B. Yeats, T. S. Eliot, Robert Lowell and Allen Ginsberg, the literary apocalyptic--identifiable by its homology with the major elements of the biblical Apocalypse--undergoes progressively complex transmutations. While in the early Yeats the apocalyptic is evocative of earnest Romantic moods, in his later work it is complicated by irony, yoked to the cycles of Yeatsean history, and counteracted by exaggerated postures of defiance. In Eliot, a reductive juxtaposition of the apocalyptic and the contemporary foreshortens the traditional paradigms to a diminutive modern-day scale. This dissertation examines the activities of hunting and exchange and how they are thought about by the northern Quebec Cree of Wemindji. The activities of material production are generated in the dialectical relation of experience to Cree structures of thought. Reciprocity amounts to a paradigm for Cree thought, informing models of both ecological and social relations. The effect of material relations on structural transformations is viewed in discursive genres of several levels, ranging from everyday dialogue to mythico-ritual symbolism. This thesis directs attention to the way in which the economics profession has sought to explain the phenomenon of inflation. The first half is primarily a detailed survey of the mainstream postwar literature in this area. The first five chapters provide a comprehensive review and a critical reappraisal of the basic theoretical contributions of successive theorists. The second half of the thesis proposes an alternative approach built essentially upon the early ideas of the neo-Wicksellian over-investment writers and upon the underlying 'structural' model found in Keynes' Treatise on Money. Finite determinacy theorems are generalized to the class of C('k) maps where k (LESSTHEQ) (INFIN) is sufficiently large. For these maps, the concept of a combinatorial unfolding is defined. In the case k = (INFIN), the infinitesimal characterization of a combinatorial unfolding coincides with that of a universal unfolding. By representing a function by a polynomial in which the coefficients depend on parameters, each change of co-ordinates required in the demonstrations is obtained by variation of the coefficients in a polynomial.  Lire la suite
