Alabagrus is a New World genus of braconid wasps. All Alabagrus are apparently parasitic on leaf rolling and stem boring lepidopterous larvae. Alabagrus is primarily Neotropical with 8 species in the U.S.A. and one species, A. texanus, that reaches southern Ontario and Quebec. One hundred and eight (108) species are described, keyed and placed in species groups. Eight (8) species have names; most of the remaining 100 species are new to science. Types must be checked in Europe before these species can be named. Microdus nigrotrochantericus Viereck is synonymized with Bassus imitatus Cresson. The transmembrane potential changes ((DELTA)(PSI)) induced by the sensitizing cancer extract in leukocytes from patients with cancer were measured as part of their transmembrane signalling. Cancer extracts induce (DELTA)(PSI) changes in sensitized leukocytes, initiating the cascade of reactions that lead to leukocyte nonadherence to glass. Monocytes armed with cytophilic antitumor antibodies recognized the organ-specific cancer neoantigen (OSN) in extracts of allogeneic cancer and released leukotriene mediators that affected themselves and bystander leukocytes. The general principles underlying ACP-EEC trade cooperation, as exemplified by the Lome II Convention, are singularly innovative and unprecedented in international economic relations. However, trade liberalization measures are valuable only in so far as they encourage the expansion of trade. Protectionism inherent in the EEC's common agricultural policy, and certain uncoordinated and inconsistent policies being pursued by the Community and its Member States have greatly impaired the benefits that would otherwise have inured to the ACP States. The nonlinear visoelastic behavior that accompanies large transient deformations in high molecular weight polymer melts and concentrated solutions is not at all well-understood, because equipment suitable for the investigation of such phenomena have not been available. This lack of understanding has limited the advancement of plastics processing technology, because the deformations that occur in polymer processing often take the melt well into the nonlinear regime. Furthermore, it has not been possible to test constitutive equations formulated to describe nonlinear phenomena. Eight experiments examined the effects of placing a sequential organization cue (the frequency proximity between successive tones) into competition with various binaural cues. The sequential organization of an alternating pair of monaural pure tones (A and B) was found to oppose the effect of a contralateral noise burst (synchronous with B) to delateralize B's perceived position and to distort its perceived purity. Similarly, the sequential organization of a monaural tone with the same-ear component of a dichotic tone was found to often oppose the perceptual integration of the components of the dichotic tone. The present study evaluates the efficacy of self-hypnosis and its components--relaxation instructions and waking analgesia suggestions--for pain reduction in patients recovering from gallbladder surgery. Forty elective surgery patients were randomly assigned to one of the three experimental pain control procedures or to a standard treatment control group--preoperative teaching. The treatments were found to be equally credible and generated equivalent expectancies for success. Pain was assessed using multiple subjective and objective measures sampled across the postoperative period. Multivariate analysis of these data indicated that the experimental treatments were no more effective in diminishing postoperative pain than the control procedure. However, the …  Lire la suite

The effects of ammonia in pathophysiological concentrations were studied on the electrophysiology of putative glutamatergic synapses in the rat hippocampal formation; experiments were done in vitro and in vivo. Exposure of hippocampal slices to 5 mM ammonium chloride reduced the orthodromic population spike evoked in CA1 and CA3 pyramidal cell layer and in granule cell layer, following stimulation of their respective main afferent system. However, antidromic responses evoked in these groups of neurons were not affected by ammonia. This dissertation is a statement concerning Calvin's view of God and Calvin's view of grace, as they appear in the sermons. Contrary to the opinion of Barth and others, to the effect that for Calvin Christ is the mere executor of the Father's inscrutable and symmetrical decrees, we assert that the requirements of the pastoral situation led Calvin to give much more place to election than to reprobation. We have observed the electronic transitions within the ('4)T(,1g) ground state of Co('2+) in MgO by Raman spectroscopy. We identified the (GAMMA)(,6g) (--->) (GAMMA)(,8g)('1) transition at 305 cm('-1) and the (GAMMA)(,6g )(--->)(, )(GAMMA)(,8g)('2) transition at 930 cm('-1); the (GAMMA)(,6g )(--->)(, )(GAMMA)(,7g) transition is not seen and is lost in the two-phonon band. We also observed an impurity induced vibration mode at 280 cm('-1), in resonance with the acoustic phonon branches at the surface of the Brillouin zone. Geophysical measurements can often be described in terms of multichannel, autoregressive data models from which one can directly derive measures of the harmonic composition of the underlying geophysical process and its inherent self-predictability. We explore methods for and uses of multichannel autoregressive data modelling in a geophysical context. Autoregressive data modelling using the least-squares linear prediction method is generalized to multichannel time series. A recursive algorithm is obtained for the formation of the system of multichannel normal equations which determine the least-squares solution of the multichannel linear prediction problem. The work reported here was aimed at extending previous findings suggesting that the medial and lateral substantia nigra (SN) are functionally different with regard to intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS) and circling. It was found that the effects of systemic D- and L-amphetamine on ICSS were different for medial and lateral SN sites. These differences were attributed to the presence of two subtypes of dopamine (DA) neurons in the SN.
