2019 — Lawyers as corruption brokers: The "production" of a corrupt legal profession and the Chinese state
    Résumé

Over the past decades, corruption in China's courts has become a salient issue. A recent report published in the Chinese mainstream media demonstrates that judicial corruption has infiltrated all levels of courts and tainted court adjudications in all types of litigations. As a result of deep-seated grievances brought by judicial corruption, scholars have analyzed the genesis of corruption from different angles and, in particular, they have examined the political interference on the judiciary and a lack of professionalism and accountability of judges in China's courts. The role of other legal actors, who frequently interact with judges and facilitate corrupt practices, …  Lire la suite

2019 — Studying the role of the filopodial regulator, MYO10, in transzonal projections dynamics in the mouse ovarian follicle
    Résumé

Folliculogenesis encompasses the process of oocyte development, allowing for the growth and maturation of a competent oocyte. Communication between the oocyte and the somatic granulosa cells surrounding it is crucial for the success of this process. Throughout growth, a thick extra-cellular layer termed the zona pellucida is present between the granulosa cells and the oocyte. In order to maintain communication between the two, granulosa cells establish physical contact with the oocyte via actin-containing filopodia-like structures known as transzonal projections (TZPs). These projections allow the direct transfer of nutrients and regulatory signals from the granulosa cells to the oocyte. Given that …  Lire la suite

2019 — Effect of novel drying techniques on the drying kinetics and physiological quality of soybean seeds

2019 — Characterizing the brain tumor microenvironment
    Résumé

Background: Targeting the tumor microenvironment has become a promising avenue of oncology, however little is known about this aspect in medulloblastoma. The tumor microenvironment includes many components which may either inhibit or promote malignant growth. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and neutrophils have demonstrated both pro- and anti-tumoral activity that can vary between tumor types. Senescent cells exhibit a senescent associated secretory phenotype (SASP) which can affect neighboring tumor cells, immune cell infiltration, and cell differentiation. We aimed to characterize the tumor microenvironment in the pediatric brain tumor Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) medulloblastoma.Methods/Results: Using the Ptch1+/- mouse model of Shh medulloblastoma, we have …  Lire la suite

    2019 — Efficient whole-brain orientation-specific T1 mapping at 3 tesla

2019 — A history of Palestinian uprisings through prison resistance since 1967
    Résumé

This thesis explores how Palestinian prisoners in Israel and across the Middle East organized and mobilized during periods of nationalist revolt since the 1970s. It examines the way prisoners formed internal governing structures and committees that provided order, discipline, and services, like education. With the help of these structures, prisoners raised morale and maintained the unity necessary for collective action. Prisoners participated in collective actions ranging from noncompliance, hunger strikes and refusing to stand for counts to more militant stances, like rioting, and arson. Prisoners themselves created important art works and also came to be symbols of sumud, or steadfastness …  Lire la suite

2019 — A security-constrained unit commitment formulation using the flexibility envelope method
    Résumé

The traditional Economic Dispatch and Unit Commitment problem formulations are not able to handle any variability in the load and non-dispatchable generation like solar and wind power. Prior work developed an Economic Dispatch formulation using the concept of flexibility envelopes. The envelope, like the stochastic scenario-based approach, is an approach able to deal with the variability of the load and non-dispatchable generation at minimal computational cost. In this thesis, we first propose a Unit Commitment formulation using the flexibility envelope approach. This formulation takes into account the commitment, start-up and shut-down of dispachable generating units. The main innovation lies with …  Lire la suite

2019 — Localizing 'Global' Jihad: The organization and narration of violence and community in Islamist insurgencies

The first part of this thesis presents a translation into English of Jacques Renaud’s 1964 novel Le cassé, a novel twice translated in the past, firstly by Gérald Robitaille (Flat Broke and Beat, 1964), then by David Homel (Broke City, 1984). Our own translation is largely based on Henri Meschonnic’s notion of poetics. In its second part, this thesis examines the reasons leading us to propose a third translation for this novel. We suggest that transposing literary joual into an English slang merely prolongs its minority language situation. In this vein, we offer another possibility for its translation that would …  Lire la suite

2019 — Evaluating the effectiveness of a brief mindfulness task in university students with a history of non-suicidal self-injury engagement
    Résumé

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is defined as the deliberate and intentional destruction of one’s own bodily tissue without suicidal intent and for reasons that are not socially sanctioned. Current theoretical frameworks posit that engagement in NSSI is due to an inability to regulate one’s emotions. In turn, mindfulness-based interventions have been shown to enhance emotion regulatory processes in those who engage in NSSI. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether a brief mindfulness task was differentially effective at increasing state mindfulness and decreasing stress following a stress induction task in university students with versus without a history of …  Lire la suite

2019 — Linguistic alignment and the behaviour of online groups
    Résumé

Entrainment is the tendency of conversational partners to align their behaviour with that of their interlocutor. This phenomenon, known as linguistic alignment when referring to speech, has been found to correlate with many social outcomes, such as relationship and conversational success. Although traditionally studied in a laboratory setting, linguistic alignment has begun to be investigated in large datasets, including those comprising speech conducted entirely through online communication. Adding to a growing literature investigating linguistic alignment and other language norms on social media sites, we conduct a multi-experiment investigation of the phenomenon of linguistic alignment on the social media site Reddit. …  Lire la suite

2019 — Structural determinants of ampa receptor kinetic regulation by transmembrane auxiliary proteins

2019 — Nanostructure of calcareous biominerals and osteopontin

2019 — Fragmented abundance: disjunction and uncertainty in a solar economy
    Résumé

This project examines contemporary capitalism’s relationship to abundance and uncertainty, via the political economy of electrical infrastructure. Echoing Bataille’s notion of solar economy, in which the primary problem is not scarcity but managing excess, I orient around a case of relative wealth and literal solar energy abundance: California’s electricity grid, especially from the 1990s to the present. Whereas much recent attention to infrastructure has focused on moments of breakdown, I develop the conceptual terrain surrounding positive investments in infrastructural mediation of the human-earth metabolism. In attempting to smooth over the uncertainty and intermittency introduced by renewable energy, electrical infrastructures work …  Lire la suite

2019 — Nodal is required to maintain the uterine environment in an anti-inflammatory state during pregnancy
    Résumé

Preterm birth, defined as delivery before 37 weeks of gestation, is a global problem. It is a significant cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality where premature infants are at increased risk of blindness, respiratory defects and cerebral palsy. Preterm birth is a complicated phenotype resulting from interactions between genetic and environmental, social and health factors. Our laboratory has previously demonstrated that Nodal, a morphogen belonging to the TGF-ß superfamily, is involved in implantation, placentation, and most importantly, preterm birth (PTB). Interestingly, 80% of the pregnant Nodal conditional uterine-specific knockout females deliver two days prior to term which is a rare …

According to Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators (CESI), in 2015, the transport sector was the 4th leading source of PM2.5 emissions in Canada. Vehicular emissions contribute significantly to air quality problems and public health issues in urban areas. Nevertheless, previous studies have shown that transport users do not perceive their travel-related emissions as out of pocket costs. In addition, travelers prefer emissions’ information in monetary values rather than in their own units (tons or grams of emissions). In this study, I estimate the health-related costs of transport emissions for Montreal residents. In addition, I examine the use of an air dispersion …  Lire la suite

2019 — Dopamine receptor D2 (DRD2) antagonism as a therapeutic approach against pancreatic cancer
    Résumé

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the most common form of pancreatic cancer. Chemotherapeutic agents, including gemcitabine, alone or in combination with other anti-cancer drugs, are widely applied for treatment. However, benefits from these treatments are modest due to the therapeutic limitations associated with drug resistance. Therefore, identification of new targetable molecules is urgently needed in order to improve survival and prognosis. Dopamine receptor D2 (DRD2) is a potential target whose inhibition suppresses PDAC proliferation and metastasis upon the functional blockage of the receptor with antagonists in vitro and in vivo. In this study, we investigated possible therapeutic benefits of a …  Lire la suite

Background Bone graft procedures are commonly performed worldwide for segmental bone defects resulting from high-energy trauma, congenital deformity, infection or tumor resection. The current gold standard for repair of large long bone defects is the use of bone and blood vessels, as vascularized bone graft, harvested from another part of the body and transplanted to the area of the missing tissue. This creates significant donor site injury and is often an inadequate anatomical match. Making synthetic vascularized bone without recourse to potentially dangerous and expensive growth factors can potentially revolutionize reconstructive surgery and provide significant improvements in patients' lives. Human FOXP3+ regulatory T (Treg) cells play an essential role in the maintenance of immune homeostasis by controlling self-tolerance while maintaining immune responses to non-self antigens. Treg cells constitutively express the master regulator transcription factor FOXP3, are hyporesponsive to in vitro TCR-induced proliferation, express low levels of inflammatory cytokines and inhibit the activation, maturation and effector functions of a variety of innate and adoptive immune cells. Mutation of the foxp3 locus and consequential abrogation of Treg cell function lead to the development of multi-organ autoimmunity in mice and in humans. Some have reported that Treg cell numbers and function are …  Lire la suite
