2019 — Navigating the forbidden: Exploring religious and sexual identity conflict through the lens of law
    Résumé

This thesis considers the tensions that lesbian or gay ("L/G") religious people experience between their sexual and religious identities and how they negotiate these tensions. Specifically, it analyzes the challenges of evangelical Christian men who identify as 'ex-gay' and Orthodox Jewish women who identify as lesbian. Most of the people who are the focus of this research live within religious communities—situated within a more secular state framework (the USA)—that disavow same-sex attraction as a matter of religious principle and law. This dissertation is informed by a feminist methodology and a legal pluralism and critical legal pluralism theoretical framework. A legal …  Lire la suite

2019 — Experimental and analytical examination of spherical flame instabilities

2019 — The new crimes of rape and sexual slavery against child soldiers at the ICC: A feminist perspective of the expressivist potential
    Résumé

This thesis explores the capacity of international criminal law (ICL) to express norms in the context of sex crimes prosecutions from a feminist perspective. Two key elements are considered: norm expression and the creation of a wartime narrative. Ultimately, this thesis seeks to analyze the expressive strengths and shortcomings of ICL in relation to the prosecution of the crimes of rape and sexual slavery against child soldiers. Those "new crimes" are currently prosecuted in the case of The Prosecutor v. Bosco Ntaganda at the International Criminal Court (ICC). The first chapter explores the feminist literature on this matter and how …  Lire la suite

2019 — The state and variability of the carbonate system of the Canadian Arctic in the context of ocean acidification

2019 — Changes in synaptic connectivity during ultradian growth hormone secretion are correlated with changes in astrocytic coverage of neurons as seen in super-resolution and electron microscopy
    Résumé

The secretion of growth hormone (GH) occurs in a pulsatile manner throughout the day in mammals. Multiple mechanisms must come together to ensure repeated pulses and thus hormonal homeostasis. The hypothalamus serves as a “control center” for this pulsatility via the synthesis and secretion of GH-releasing hormone (GHRH) and somatostatin (SS) that act reciprocally to influence GH secretion from the pituitary gland into the bloodstream. Moreover, it is well known that synaptic transmission in the hypothalamus undergoes cyclical changes in parallel with the circadian and ultradian rhythms of hypothalamic hormone secretion. Our lab and others have shown in the past …  Lire la suite

2019 — Bioavailability of polyphenols extracted from fruit pomace using green technologies

2019 — The reputation for restraint: explaining U.S. nonproliferation choices
    Résumé

Preventing the spread of nuclear weapons has been an important objective of the United States since the detonation of the first atomic weapon, but even more so since the end of the Cold War. While Washington has shown some leniency toward allies between the 1950s and 1970s, since then it has engaged in extensive nonproliferation efforts against friends and foes alike. This is because nuclear proliferation has been deemed a security threat for the United States and its allies. However, considering the existential threat, as well as the large shift in the balance of power, nuclear proliferation represents, it has …  Lire la suite

2019 — Stereological investigation of serotonin type 3 receptors in the substantia nigra and dorsal raphe nucleus in the rat
    Résumé

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is a common neurotransmitter in mammals, and the serotonergic system plays an essential role in the regulation of various behaviours such as sleep, perception, and cognitive and autonomic functions in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS). Previous studies have investigated the distribution pattern of the 5-HT type 3 (5-HT3) receptor in the brain. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that 5-HT3 receptors are expressed in both the substantia nigra (SN) and the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN). Here, we determine the quantitative distribution of 5-HT3 receptors in the SN and DRN of the rat.Six rats were deeply anaesthetised with …  Lire la suite

2019 — Imaging and manipulation of single nucleic acids with convex Lens-induced confinement
    Résumé

Understanding the biophysics of DNA and RNA at the single-molecule level is critical to advancing the fields of molecular biology, diagnostics, and pharmaceuticals, and developing new treatments for genetic disorders. Single-molecule microscopy techniques have generated new knowledge of the interactions between nucleic acids and proteins, drugs, and other nucleic acid molecules. However, these techniques have either limited observation times, are limited to low concentrations, or require molecular tethering. Recently, Convex Lens-induced Confinement (CLiC) has emerged to address these challenges. In CLiC, molecules are introduced between two glass surfaces that are gradually pressed together to confine molecules in a nanoscale gap …  Lire la suite

2019 — Understanding Emily Carr: A look at the fashioning of an autonomous self
    Résumé

In this thesis, I argue that Emily Carr's books reveal her quest to define herself as an artist and as a person, drawing inspiration from an Authority manifest in the Pacific Northwest forest and pushing against conventions that would have limited her and suffocated her as well as her art. I endeavour an original exploration of print culture, in examining how this author discovered herself through books, and Canadian modernism, in charting how this talented woman found a vocation in the early twentieth century. As Emily Carr's conflicted public image has complicated critical discussion of her literary oeuvre, my thesis …  Lire la suite

2019 — MiR-122 interactions at the 5' terminus of the hepatitis C virus genome prevent recognition of the viral RNA by cellular pyrophosphatases
    Résumé

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) recruits two molecules of the liver-specific microRNA-122 (miR-122) to two adjacent sites (S1 and S2) located at the 5′ end of the viral RNA genome. This interaction promotes viral RNA accumulation, but the precise mechanism(s) remain incompletely understood. Previous studies suggest that miR-122 is able to protect the HCV genome from 5′ exonucleases (Xrn1/2), but this protection is not sufficient to account for the effect of miR-122 on HCV RNA accumulation. Results also suggest that sequences in the 3′ tail of miR-122 may mediate important interactions that are involved in HCV RNA accumulation, but are not …  Lire la suite

Inclusive Physical and Health Education (PHE) suggests that students with disabilities be educated alongside their non-disabled peers so that all students receive similar educational experiences. Over the years, schools began hiring paraprofessionals in an attempt to improve inclusive classroom environments. Previous research has examined paraprofessional roles and responsibilities, training needs and teacher-paraprofessional collaboration. The purpose of this study was to explore the working relationship between paraprofessionals and PHE teachers to determine the various factors that may impact inclusive PHE. The overarching research question was: How do paraprofessionals and PHE teachers experience working as a team in the context of PHE? …  Lire la suite

2019 — The neuroplasticity paradox: Can lack of neuroplasticity protect older adults from motor memory interference?
    Résumé

Motor memory consolidation is a process by which motor memories encoded during the practice of a motor skill are transformed from an initial fragile state to a more solid and stable state (Widmaier et al., 2016). Motor memories encoded by older adults are easily disrupted when another task is practiced soon after practice, during the first stages of consolidation (Roig et al, 2014). However, the neural mechanisms underlying this higher susceptibility to memory interference in older individuals are not known. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive stimulation (NIBS) technique that can be used to manipulate brain activity, thus providing …  Lire la suite

2019 — Role of prolactin hormone in breast cancer: discovery of a novel pro-oncogenic function for cleavage and polyadenylation specific factor 6 in aggressive breast cancer
    Résumé

Prolactin (PRL) is an anterior pituitary hormone that plays a key role in mammary gland development and lactation through the activation of the JAK2/STAT5 pathway. While the role of PRL in breast carcinogenesis is debatable, recent findings have uncovered its potential anti-tumorigenic effects. Breast cancer is a major cause of death in females. Therefore, characterizing the mechanisms contributing to breast tumorigenesis is crucial for the discovery of novel targets for breast cancer prognosis and therapy. Previously, we identified cleavage and polyadenylation specific factor 6 (CPSF6) as a novel PRL downregulated gene in mammary epithelial cells. Nevertheless, the exact role of …  Lire la suite

2019 — Simulation for design of 3D printed pneumatic hyperelastic soft bodies with embedded strain limiting structures
    Résumé

Soft bodies provide new ways for mechanisms to work. They can make actions, such as grabbing, simpler than with rigid structures. However, predicting the behaviour of various soft body designs is challenging. Computational fabrication technologies have revolutionized the fabrication process, but it still takes about a day to create a model. Hence, even with rapid prototyping, iterative random trial and error design process is impractical. Motivated by these facts, in this thesis, we create a user-driven pneumatic soft body simulation tool. The tool allows the user to design and explore the capabilities of air pressure actuated soft bodies without going …  Lire la suite

    Résumé

In order to address the shortcomings of mobility-centered transport planning, planning for accessibility is increasingly considered as an essential complementary approach. This approach aims to provide reasonable access to destinations (employment centers, amenities, social and health services, etc.) to the entire population instead of prioritizing the optimization of travel times. Although a large body of literature has explored how to conceptualize and measure accessibility, research on how to incorporate accessibility in transport planning is scarce. Knowing that accessibility is currently marginalized in transport planning, the overarching goal of this dissertation is to contribute to the implementation of accessibility measures in …  Lire la suite

2019 — Negative regulation of dendritic cell activation and function by the transcriptional repressor polycomb group factor 6
    Résumé

Dendritic cells (DCs) are professional antigen presenting cells of the innate immune system. They are finely tuned to sense invading pathogens and danger signals. The initiation of appropriate T cell activation, expansion and effector function relies on the delivery of three signals from DCs: antigen presentation, costimulation and cytokine production. The combination of these three signals determines the type and magnitude of the T cell response. Activation of DCs is accompanied by rapid and global transcriptional reprogramming mediated, in large part, by epigenetic modification downstream of signal transduction pathways. Intrinsic mechanisms exist to restrain DC activation in the absence of …  Lire la suite

The marriage of DNA with synthetic polymers, creating DNA-polymer hybrids, has allowed the realization of novel materials with added functionalities, that could not be achieved otherwise. To date, different synthetic routes have been proposed for the generation of DNA block copolymers. However, the generation of monodisperse DNA-polymer conjugates with control over the sequence of monomer and length of strand has been a challenge. These limitations have impacted the potential applications of DNA-polymer conjugates, where structural polydispersity …  Lire la suite
