2024 — Probing the nature of young puffy planets through theoretical mass constraints
    Résumé

Discoveries of close-in young puffy planets raise the question of whether they are bonafide hot Jupiters or puffed-up Neptunes, potentially placing constraints on the formation location and timescale of hot Jupiters. Obtaining mass measurements for these planets is challenging due to stellar activity and noisy spectra. Therefore, we aim to provide independent theoretical constraints on the masses of these young planets based on their radii, incident fluxes, and ages, benchmarking to the planets of age <1 Gyr detected by K2 and TESS. Through a combination of interior structure models, considerations of photoevaporative mass loss, and empirical mass-metallicity trends, we present …  Lire la suite

2024 — Graph-jigsaw conditioned diffusion model for skeleton-based video anomaly detection
    Résumé

Skeleton-based video anomaly detection (SVAD) is a crucial task in computer vision. Accurately identifying abnormal patterns or events enables operators to promptly detect suspicious activities, thereby enhancing safety. Achieving this demands a comprehensive understanding of human motions, both at body and region levels, while also accounting for the wide variations of performing a single action. However, existing studies fail to simultaneously address these crucial properties. This paper introduces a novel, practical and lightweight framework, namely Graph-Jigsaw Conditioned Diffusion Model for Skeleton-based Video Anomaly Detection (GiCiSAD) to overcome the challenges associated with SVAD. GiCiSAD consists of three novel modules: the GraphAttention-based …  Lire la suite

2024 — Revisiting the disinformation resilience framework: the context of deliberate disinformation attacks
    Résumé

The full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia in February 2022 was accompanied by a massive global disinformation campaign that the country launched to justify its act of aggression. Despite the measures taken, the Russian disinformation rhetoric persists in the public discourse. This thesis aims to revisit the disinformation resilience framework by analyzing the macro- and micro-level factors that enhance or debilitate resilience to disinformation in the context of a purposeful information attack by an external actor. I use the case of the ongoing Russian war on Ukraine and the YouGov-Cambridge Globalism Project survey and argue that aside from the established …  Lire la suite

2024 — Mediating the Roles of Cell Cycle Regulators during Differentiation and Pluripotency

2024 — Unarmed and Unafraid: Accounting for Demilitarization in International Relations
    Résumé

Costa Rica and Panama have both abolished their militaries. Costa Rica dismantled its military in 1948 while Panama demilitarized in 1990. The choice of these states to demilitarize is puzzling. Many IR theories stress the need of states to maximize their chances of survival in an anarchic international system. Demilitarization does not appear to align with these theoretical expectations, since it makes a state less capable of deterring hostile powers and resisting in the case of a foreign attack. The cases of Costa Rica and Panama are particularly unusual. Of the non-military states that currently exist, Costa Rica and Panama …  Lire la suite

2024 — Biased integration of value attributes in apathy: a neuroeconomic perspective on altered motivational states in healthy older adults
    Résumé

Apathy is common in healthy older adults, but its cognitive mechanisms remain elusive. Recently, it has been proposed that apathy may result from biases in the integration of cost-benefit information during decision-making, which manifest as reduced incentivization by reward and/or increased avoidance of effort. While this approach shows promise, there is a need to broaden the scope of the types of decisions that are studied in this field. Most research on the mechanisms of apathy involves artificial laboratory scenarios requiring a two-dimensional trade-off between monetary reward and physical or cognitive effort. However, it is unclear if the patterns of behaviour …  Lire la suite

This thesis studies the inference for models that handle mixed-frequency data: factor-MIDAS regression models and group factor models. The first chapter focuses on the factor-MIDAS regression models. Factor-MIDAS regression models are often used to forecast a target variable using common factors extracted from a large panel of predictors observed at higher frequencies. The first contribution of this chapter is to derive the asymptotic distribution of the factor-MIDAS regression estimator coefficients. As in a standard factor-augmented regression model, the estimation of the factors in the first step creates an asymptotic bias in the second step. However, the fact that factors and …  Lire la suite

Background:Glomerular diseases affect and damage the filtering units of the kidney. Glomerulonephritis (GN) and diabetic nephropathy are leading causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and have a huge adverse impact on health. Glomerular diseases are typically associated with injury to podocytes (glomerular epithelial cells; GECs), and often exhibit protein misfolding leading to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. ER function is important for proteostasis in podocytes, including production of slit diaphragm and glomerular basement membrane (GBM) proteins. The GBM is composed of protein networks and in adults, the type IV collagen component of GBM is solely derived from podocytes.ER protein misfolding is …

2024 — Watershed lives: an ethnography of river infrastructure and ruination in Lebanon
    Résumé

This dissertation is a historical ethnography of the Litani river dam in Lebanon (1954-2022). Drawing on more than 20 months of archival and ethnographic fieldwork (January 2021-September 2022) in the rural region of the West Bekaa, where the dam is located, I examine how debt-fueled development and social insecurities have set in motion what I call a ‘politics of bereavement’ — a set of non-redemptive and pessimistic discourses and practices that enlist and mobilize informal networks, kinship connections, and factional ties to mitigate material, psychic, and affective losses. While the implementation of the Litani infrastructural project became associated with the …  Lire la suite

2024 — Unraveling vaccine hesitancy: vaccine decision dynamics amid the uncertainties of COVID-19

…  Lire la suite
