2024 — AMPK regulates the release of exosomal miRNAs to facilitate neuron-germ line communication during the dauer stage
    Résumé

Communication between tissues is essential for coordinating adaptive changes in response to environmental fluctuations. Cells share information using mechanisms that depend both on proximity and tissue/cell type. In Caenorhabditis elegans, the germ cells enter a state of quiescence in response to reduced nutrient availability, which is dependent on signals of neuronal origin. This signal is propagated by AMPK signalling at the onset of the dauer stage. While AMPK mutants are superficial wild type in replete conditions, they suffer from severe germline and somatic defects when they enter the dauer stage. These mutants exhibit germline hyperplasia, misregulated epigenetic marks, and premature …  Lire la suite

2024 — "If you show them respect, you’re going to [get] respect back": a theory for engaging First Nations for knowledge translation within a national nutrition and health survey
    Résumé

Introduction: Knowledge translation (KT) research aims to bridge research results and knowledge application and can be applied to address nutrition-related health inequities. Despite the increasing emphasis on engaging Indigenous communities in research, our understanding of how community engagement can achieve Indigenous KT is limited. Further, no previous research has studied the incorporation of traditional foods in engagement activities for KT. Food, Environment, Health, and Nutrition of First Nations Children and Youth (FEHNCY) is a nationally representative survey working with 60 First Nations communities in Canada to understand the relationships between the environment, food, nutrition and, health. The goal of FEHNCY …  Lire la suite

2024 — I’m convinced! Persuasive discourse in autistic and non-autistic adolescents: The role of content and manner of delivery in convincing peers

2024 — Electrical characterization of single-fiber M13 bacteriophages using nanoelectrode devices
    Résumé

In support of the increasing interest in bioelectronic materials and devices, significant effort is being directed towards the enhancement of electrical conductivity in proteins. Proteins, which are widely regarded as insulating materials, can be engineered to introduce charge-transfer or charge-transporting mechanisms to their structure. However, to accurately measure the intrinsic electrical conductivity of such protein candidates, care must be taken to avoid interfibrillar effects such as contact resistance. In this work, a nanoelectrode-based measurement system is presented for measurements on single fiber M13 bacteriophages. Nanoscale interdigitated electrodes (700 nm wide, interspaced by 400 nm) were designed and fabricated as a …  Lire la suite

2024 — Cardiac Dynamics in Auditory Perception and Production
    Résumé

This dissertation investigates how auditory rhythm perception and production affect cardiac dynamics. The first hypothesis is that individual differences in biological rhythms modulate musicians’ performance rates and cardiac responses during performance. Chapter 1 describes a study that measures pianists’ cardiac activity while performing simple melodies across four times of day (09h, 13h, 17h, 21h), using a novel application of a nonlinear analysis technique to cardiac data. Results showed that performance rates were slowest in the morning (first session), particularly for pianists with less musical training, while consistent within individual across the 12h day. Cardiac activity was most predictable and stable …  Lire la suite

2024 — Role of the obese adipose tissue microenvironment in cancer progression
    Résumé

Background: Obesity is associated with a greater risk of developing cancer and a higher mortality rate, which can in part be attributed to the influence of the adipose tissue microenvironment (ATME). White adipose tissue (WAT) stores energy but accumulates in obesity to cause chronic inflammation. On the other hand, brown adipose tissue (BAT) produces heat from chemical energy through thermogenesis. Although BAT is scarce in adults, WAT can develop BAT-like characteristics through a process called “browning” upon exposure to thermogenic stimuli. Although BAT and WAT are known to influence metabolite availability and nutrient composition of tissues, little is known about …  Lire la suite

2024 — Reprogrammable mechanical metamaterials: topological transformations across a structure, mechanism, and multistable matter

Metabolic syndrome and diabetes mellitus are increasing rapidly recently. Pancreas regeneration and replication of β-cell are some of the challenges that medical doctors and researchers face today. Cellular communication network factor 5 (CCN5) is a matricellular protein, the expression of which is under the regulation of Wnt signaling and IGF-1. Our previous characterization supports the notion that CCN5 promotes the proliferation and survival of pancreatic β-cells leading to metabolic benefits. To examine the role of endogenous CCN5 in metabolism and specifically in pancreatic islets and adipose tissues we generated total CCN5 knockout mice and fed them either with a normal …  Lire la suite

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are characterized by progressive loss of neuronal protein homeostasis. As age increases, the risk of developing any of the NDs, such as Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), drastically increases, since disrupting the delicate balance of protein synthesis, folding, and degradation causes the production and buildup of misfolded proteins. Communication between neurons is extremely crucial since it allows our central nervous system to process myriad signals and execute complex tasks. Mechanistically, neurons send information via their axon terminal and receive input via post-synapses sent throughout the dendritic branches. This event triggers changes in the proteome …  Lire la suite

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is associated with aggressive features and poor prognosis. Despite recent research leading to new therapeutic options, the clinical outcomes for TNBC patients are complicated by limited treatment options. TNBC patients cannot be treated with hormone therapy or anti-HER2 target therapy because they lack the expressions of ER, PR and HER2. Accumulating evidence has shown that TNBC cells are enriched in breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs), which are thought to be responsible for therapy failure and tumor relapse. We investigated the molecular mechanism by which TGFβ ligands regulate stemness in TNBCs. We found that TGFβ acts …  Lire la suite

Humans are sensitive to the presence of other people, as well as their interactions: for example, two individuals are detected faster when facing towards (vs. away from) each other. We asked if this perceptual preference for facing individuals in social groups might be modulated by group size, being most pronounced for small groups which are most common in everyday life. In three preregistered experiments, participants searched for facing or non-facing groups, with group size varying from two to eight. Facing groups were found faster than non-facing groups — but only for groups up to five people (Experiment 1). This effect …  Lire la suite

However, as a tumor grows, the tumor microenvironment changes, and immunosuppressive cells are recruited to enhance tumor growth and metastasis. Additionally, to maintain homeostasis, chronic inflammation leads to immune suppression which further enhances tumor growth and metastasis. Using models of inflammation (ECM, EAE, DSS-colitis), it has previously been demonstrated that CCDC88Bmut, ARHGEF2-/-, and RASAL3-/- mice experience altered inflammatory responses because of altered immune cell motility and a decrease in maturation of T cells.
