2024 — Characterization of the host-mediated modification of bacterial effector NleA
    Résumé

Escherichia coli is a ubiquitous member of the human intestinal microbiota. Although commensal E. coli and its human host generally coexist with mutual benefits in digestion and immunity, diarrheagenic E. coli are pathogens that have acquired virulence factors that permit them to cause a wide range of enteric or diarrheal diseases in healthy individuals, resulting in more than 500 million illnesses and nearly 200,000 deaths each year. Enteropathogenic and enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EPEC and EHEC) are gastrointestinal pathogens responsible for severe diarrheal illness. EPEC and EHEC form “attaching and effacing” lesions during colonization and, upon adherence, inject proteins directly into …  Lire la suite

2024 — Comparing high-tech urban agriculture to conventional agriculture in Canada
    Résumé

This thesis investigates the environmental impacts of controlled-environment urban agriculture (CE-UA) in Canada, focusing on high-tech urban lettuce farming as a case study. Given the projections indicating a global population increase to 9.7 billion by 2050, and over 70% of people residing in urban areas, the pressure on food systems, exacerbated by urbanization, necessitates sustainable solutions. Agriculture already contributes significantly to environmental pressures, with cities playing a notable role due to their population density and consumption patterns. CE-UA holds promise in mitigating the environmental impacts of food production and enhancing food system resilience. The expanding population, the effects of climate …  Lire la suite

    2024 — Kirigami/origami-inspired carbon-based multiscale metamaterials with multifunctional properties

2024 — Essays in financial econometrics: nearest correlation matrices, portfolio construction, and CAPM with stochastic volatility
    Résumé

This thesis contributes to covariance and volatility modeling in time series and econometrics, with applications to the estimation of autocorrelation matrices, portfolio optimization, and capital asset pricing models with stochastic volatility. We emphasize methods aimed at producing relatively parsimonious models, such as the simplification of covariance matrices through pretesting and numerical regularization with the Alternating Projection Algorithm (APA) [Dykstra(1983), Boyle & Dykstra (1986)], as well as extensions of the stochastic model in a CAPM-type model. The thesis is divided into three main essays. From a statistical viewpoint, the first essay studies correlation estimators regularized by the APA algorithm to avoid …  Lire la suite

2024 — Dramatic arrivals, new beginnings: dynamics, orchestration, and the moment of recapitulation in the nineteenth-century symphony
    Résumé

This thesis examines sonata-form movements from symphonies composed between 1800 and 1899, analyzing dynamic markings and orchestration at the beginning of the exposition, the end of the development, and the beginning of the recapitulation. The thesis divides into three large sections: first an introduction to the topic and an explanation of theoretical concepts (Chapters 1-2), then detailed analyses of the recapitulations in 14 symphonic sonata-form movements (Chapters 3-5), followed by a corpus study of 483 sonata-form movements from 256 nineteenth-century symphonies and a general conclusion (Chapter 6). The main goal of the project is to address two questions: in what …  Lire la suite

2024 — The Tea on THC: how exposure in early adolescent male and female mice leads to divergent outcomes on dopamine development and adult cognition.

According to recent estimates, around 30 million people have taken Direct-to-Consumer ancestry DNA tests, typically marketed as a fun, harmless and exciting process of discovery. These tests estimate a user’s ethnic ancestry, also matching users with biological relations on their database. This matching can produce a surprising ‘not parent expected’ discovery, where a user learns that an assumed parent (typically the father) is not a biological parent. Such news may negatively affect mental health, self-identity and familial relationships, while prompting the utilization of putatively helpful resources by affected individuals. However, there is a lack of research on this topic. Thus, …  Lire la suite

2024 — Integrating Stope Design and Long-term Production Scheduling Under Uncertainty: Methods and Applications for an Operating Copper Mine

Within the last several hundred years, human activity has caused widespread changes to Earth's atmosphere, oceans, and terrain. The long-term impacts climate and land-use change will have on ecosystems and the services they provide to humans is largely unknown. Ecosystems are built from species interactions, yet this is one of the largest gaps in knowledge in ecology. Understanding the networks of interactions underpin our planet's biosphere, and anticipating how they will change, is crucial to mitigate and adapt to anthropogenic change. In this thesis, we address many core challenges in this field: in the first chapter, we present a null …  Lire la suite

    2024 — Role of interleukin-33 in H1N1 Influenza A-induced airway hyperresponsiveness in C57BL/6 mice

This thesis is about the essence of judicial automation. It is an important matter because asking ourselves what we are doing when we automate judging should precede deliberations on how to do it. Key to my argument is the idea that judicial automation is both a historical event and a “theorizing” of judging. Theorizing because preliminary to the automation of something is a theoretical articulation of what this something is or of what it should be. The task to be automated – in our case, judging – must be formalized so that a machine can perform it. With this in …  Lire la suite

2024 — Ubiquitin ligase and signalling hub MYCBP2 is required for efficient EPHB2 tyrosine kinase receptor function
    Résumé

Eph receptor tyrosine kinases and their ligands, the ephrins, participate in a variety of normal and pathogenic processes during development and throughout adulthood. In nervous system development, ephrin:Eph signalling controls neural progenitor cell differentiation and proliferation, neuronal migration, axon outgrowth, axon pathfinding, synapse formation and maturation, and axon maintenance. Dysregulation of ephrin:Eph signalling is implicated in Alzheimer’s, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and cancer. Despite many proteins linked to these signalling pathways interacting with Eph receptors, the specific mechanisms behind such links and their coordination remain to be discovered. Furthermore, the comprehensive mechanisms governing ephrin:Eph signalling initiation, amplitude, duration, termination and functional …

The concept of a shrouded rotor has gained considerable attention in modern rotorcraft design due to its potential to improve the aerodynamic and aeroacoustics performance of the rotor. By enclosing the rotor within a cylindrical shroud, additional thrust can be generated while achieving considerable noise reduction. Most existing research has focused on the hovering condition, assuming a zero-freestream velocity. However, during the climb and descent, the shrouded tail rotor operates in an edgewise flight condition, leading to observable inflow distortion. In this study, a shrouded rotor was experimentally examined in a wind tunnel at various tip-to-freestream velocity ratios μ. The …  Lire la suite
