2021 — Working toward identifying the cell of origin of isocitrate dehydrogenase wild-type glioma

2017 — Investigation of 2-(2-methylaminoethyl)pyridine as a green corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel for applications in the oil and gas industry
    Résumé

Carbon steel (CS) is extensively used in the oil and gas industry as a material of construction of equipment and piping facilities. Naturally, this metal undergoes electrochemical reactions (also called corrosion reactions) with the surroundings to form thermodynamically stable products—rusts. This phenomenon is a serious and of a major challenge in various industries. It has been shown that corrosion costs, directly and indirectly, an industrialized country as high as 5% of its GDP. In addition, corrosion of CS in acidic media is a more challenging problem since acids tend to accelerate corrosion processes. For applications where internal general corrosion is …  Lire la suite

2003 — Microbiological and molecular biological analysis of oil contaminated marine sediments : 30 years after the spill
    Résumé

In 1970 the Arrow oil spill off Cape Breton contaminated 305 kilometres of shoreline. Aerial and land surveys have demonstrated that natural weathering has occurred throughout this period, but it was relatively slow, especially in sheltered areas like Black Duck Cove lagoon. This study analyzed the microbial hydrocarbon degradation potential in the lagoon sediments using direct and culture-based techniques. Mineralization of hydrocarbon substrates (hexadecane, octacosane and naphthalene) indicated the presence of an active degradative microbial community, however, genes from known bacterial hydrocarbon degradation pathways (alkB, ndoB, phnAc) were not detected by direct extraction of sediment DNA and PCR amplification. Sediment …  Lire la suite

2014 — The HIV-1 Nef accessory protein induces B cell abnormalties and autoimmunity
    Résumé

The HIV-1 Nef protein is known to be the major determinant of HIV-1 pathogenesis. It causes multiple abnormalities not only in the virus main target CD4+ T cells, but also other lymphocytes and myeloid cells. Studies of patients living with HIV-1 suggest that it impairs B cell functions. Poudrier J. (2001) examined the impact of the HIV-1 Nef accessory protein on B cells based on the expression of Nef in CD4+ cells of the CD4C/HIV-1Nef Tg mouse model, and established that it induced Ig switch defects and impairment in germinal centres(GC), as well as increased secretion of immunoglobulin M (IgM). …

2023 — Using Bayesian Optimization Methods in Causal Inference for Sensitivity Analysis
    Résumé

In observational studies, researchers need to estimate the causal effect of giving a specific treatment to their subjects to decide whether to recommend that treatment for future incidents or not. There are many ways to estimate the causal effect when there are no unobserved or unmeasured confounders. However, unconfoundedness cannot be guaranteed, and researchers need to assess how sensitive their estimate is to those confounders. Researchers can draw more accurate conclusions by looking at the contour plots of the confounding bias or the plot of the estimated effect with zero bias using some hypothetical bias parameters. The classical way to …

Enfin, …  Lire la suite

2026 — The boundaries of proxy theory: autonomy in Iran’s non-state relationships

2002 — Mass Transfer and biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from non-aqueous phase liquids
    Résumé

Organic liquids such as crude oils, creosotes and coal tar often remain in contact with groundwater or surface waters for long periods of time before or during any attempted remediation. Potentially toxic solutes such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are continuously released from pollutant oil phases described above to the water phase. The research was aimed at understanding how physicochemical as well as biological phenomena affect dissolution and biodegradation of PAH compounds from pollutant oil phases. These phenomena were investigated for a simple two-component non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) and for creosote, a multi component NAPL. Mass transfer experiments of naphthalene …  Lire la suite

2015 — End-to-end text recognition with deep learning architectures
    Résumé

Accurate text recognition in documents was one of the milestones of machine learning and computer vision techniques. However, despite this early success, general text recognition still remains an unsolved problem. Since textual information is an artificial signal, designed to be simple to draw, it can be easily confused with other simple signals that naturally exist. Moreover, unlike in document text recognition, assumptions on the way text exists should be kept to a minimum in the general setting, creating the need for more robust detectors and recognizers. From a practical point of view, engineering an end-to-end system is an elaborate effort. …  Lire la suite

The artificial cells contained leucine dehydrogenase, glucose dehydrogenase and Dextran-NAD$ sp+.$ These were packed in a column bioreactor to achieve continuous conversion of ammonia into L-valine with simultaneous regeneration of Dextran-NADH. Kinetic analysis showed that diffusion restriction is negligble when batch and packed-bed column bioreactors were used. The limiting step controlling the rate was the chemical reaction. The effect of backmixing on degree of conversion was insignificant. Ammonia conversion varied linearly with the space time in the range of 0.6-30 minutes. The microencapsulated multienzyme system showed higher efficiency when …  Lire la suite

Infection with both of these viruses is associated with immune activation and a higher risk of health complications such as cardiovascular disease (CVD). CMV infection expands a population of natural killer (NK) cells having adaptive properties. Adaptive NK (adapNK) cells are positive for NKG2C, CD57 and CD16. Most AdapNK cells have potent antibody dependent (AD) responses such as AD cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) and AD NK cell activation (ADNKA). I hypothesized that adapNK cells play a role in HIV pathogenesis in the context of CMV co-infection. To test this …  Lire la suite
