La formation de thaumasite dans du ciment Portland ordinaire et du ciment Portland comportant du carbonate de calcium qui furent sujet à la carbonatation fut vérifiée. La motivation de la recherche est de déterminer si le béton carboné est vulnérable à une attaque chimique en présence de sulfates, lorsque exposé à de basses températures. La formation de thaumasite fut remarquée dans du béton contenant du ciment Portland comportant du carbonate de calcium. Data were collected on 24 traits to characterize and classify 35 white floury corn (Zea mays L.) landraces collected on native reserves in Ontario. Several landrace x landrace and landrace x inbred crosses were evaluated. Test crosses were made to determine whether the landraces carry the floury-l (fl$ sb1$) allele. Most traits examined exhibited considerable variation among the landraces. Variation was also observed within many of the landraces for ear and cob colour, for endosperm texture and row number. A recombinant aminopeptidase (pepN) of Lactobacillus rhamnosus S93 was encapsulated in chitosan-coated alginate beads using an extrusion method. The effects of alginate, CaCl2, chitosan concentrations, hardening time, pH, and alginate/enzyme ratios on the encapsulation efficiency (EE) and the enzyme release (ER) were then investigated. Chitosan in the gelling solution significantly increased the encapsulation efficiency (EE) and also retarded the enzyme release (ER) from the beads. The greatest EE was observed in a pH 5.4 solution (chitosan-CaCl2) during bead formation. Increasing the CaCl2 concentration over 0.1 M neither affected the EE nor the ER. Frothers are surface-active agents used in flotation to decrease bubble size and promote froth stability. The common frothers are alcohols and polyglycols. One means to classify frothers is by the extent of bubble size reduction. Bubble size measurement is labour-intensive and this thesis explores the use of gas holdup as a surrogate for bubble size. The Duplan strain of Radiation Leukemia Virus (RadLV) induces an AIDS-like syndrome when injected intraperitoneally into adult C57BL/6 mice. The mice develop T cell depletion, polyclonal B cell proliferation (lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly), hypergammaglobulinemia, and immune deficiency. This syndrome has recently been designated MAIDS (murine acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). This virus preparation, passaged in vivo, is crude and known to contain different strains of retroviruses. Problem. Oppressive cultural and social representations are inscribed on the body and intersect with women's subjective identity. Objective. The present study explores the use of the body as a vehicle for resistance against such inscriptions. Method. The practice of martial arts is investigated as one of the means of empowerment for women. Quantitative methods were used to compare the levels of empowerment in a group of women who practice martial arts versus a comparison group of women who do not practice martial arts. Results. PTSD is a devastating disorder that affects 7-12% of individuals who experience a traumatic event in their lives. Individuals suffering from the disorder show a dysfunctional HPA axis with decreased basal cortisol release and increased glucocorticoid receptor sensitivity. Recently, epigenetic studies have shown associations between trauma and the subsequent effects on the HPA axis in abused participants who committed suicide. Importantly, findings also showed child trauma as being a significant factor in DNA methylation levels in promoter region 1F in the hippocampus.
