To determine whether muscle contractions can increase muscle blood flow independently from metabolic factors, we isolated the diaphragmatic vasculature of 16 anesthetized and mechanically ventilated dogs. Phrenic inflow (Qphr) was controlled with a constant pressure source and the pressure (Pa) was decreased in steps to obtain the pressure-flow relation (P-Q). The vasculture was maximally vasodilated and contractions occurred spontaneously (n = 6) or were induced by twitches (n = 12) or tetanic trains (n = 7). In many sensor network applications, the sensor readings are inter-node correlated. In such cases, efficient gathering of sensor readings requires distributed compression. Distributed source coding provides practical solutions for compression of these correlated readings when the appropriate rates for the marginal encoding is known at the sensor nodes. In this thesis, we present a data-gathering technique for sensor networks that exploits correlation between sensor data at different locations in the network. An accurate and fast technique has been developed for computing the supply current as well as the delay in CMOS combinational circuits. It is based on a new analytical model of the CMOS inverter which is designed specifically to compute the maximum supply current and the delay without recourse to integration. If the current waveform is needed, integration is used only for the trailing edge. This model can be used not only to compute maximum supply current and delay in CMOS circuits, but also to detect dynamic hazards. The 26S proteasome is the principal degradation structure of intracellular proteins in eukaryotes. The proteasome is composed of two 19S regulatory particles and a 20S catalytic core. The lid region of the 19S proteasome comprises at least 8 subunits that recognizes proteasomal substrates, including misfolded, truncated, or erroneously posttranslated proteins, as well as other tightly controlled and short-lived proteins. Such substrates are typically tagged with a small peptide called ubiquitin to facilitate their rapid and efficient recognition and translocation to the proteasome. In humans, Salmonella infections cause two major clinical diseases: salmonellosis and typhoid fever. Silent carriage of the bacteria is frequent and contributes to disease dissemination. Using a genomic approach, we have reported the identification of ten loci (Ses1-Ses10) affecting Salmonella persistence in mice. A major locus, Ses1, was validated using a congenic approach. Nramp1 remains a strong candidate gene for Ses1 although we did not detect a significant interaction between Ses1 and Nramp1-/-. We also present the creation of new double congenic strains (Ses1/Ses4 and Ses1/Ses5) that will be used to validate the inheritance model of Salmonella clearance in females. …  Lire la suite

An often proposed mechanism to overcome the system of efflux transporters and tight junctions present at the blood brain barrier (BBB) is the receptor-mediated transport via endocytosis. Among the proposed transport vehicles, the transferrin receptor (TfR) has been considered to be one of the most attractive targets. Besides transferrin itself and the antibody OX26 (anti-rat TfR-antibody), it has recently been shown that peptides are also able to bind to the transferrin receptor and are internalized into TfR expressing cells. While primary disease is often well controlled, metastasis is responsible for most breast cancer (BC) related deaths. Gaps remain in our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the predilection of cancer cells to specific sites (organotropism). Understanding the mediators to site- specific metastasis would contribute to the development of earlier diagnosis of metastasis and tailor better interventions accordingly. During snowmelt net radiation above a snow surface was measured simultaneously at forty-four locations to permit comparison of measurements in a black spruce forest with those in the open. Data, obtained during cloudy daylight and at night were used to produce meaningful surface radiation maps of the experimental site. For all periods of observation the range in values recorded between any two sensors was greatest between those positioned in the forest. Spatially, net radiation varied most within the forest. Whereas a provincial regulation and a municipal by-law can usually cohabit in the absence of conflict, s. 118.3.3 of the Environmental Quality Act (EQA) provides for a different rule. Regulations thereunder prevail over any municipal by-law relating to the same object. To understand why the legislator opted for a different rule in environmental matters and what the intent behind s. 118.3.3 EQA was, this thesis presents a legislative history of the provision, from its adoption in 1972 to today. This thesis*, after presenting an overview of Mexico, examines the new business environment prevailing in Mexico focussing on the laws and regulations affecting foreign investments and and foreigners in Mexico. It then compares Mexico's foreign direct investment (FDI) regulations with those of Canada and the United States in relation to the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement of 1988. Since Mexico's FDI concerns and policies are similar those of Canada, this comparison provides useful perspectives for a prospective analysis of acceptable FDI regulations in a North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Conséquemment, les prévisions météorologiques à leur sujet sont souvent imprécises. Afin d'améliorer les modèles de prévisions météorologiques dans l'Arctique, nous devons mieux doser la contribution des particularités géographiques et météorologiques inhérente à cetterégion, notamment la glace de mer, le relief accidenté et l'importante stabilité atmosphérique. The objective of this study was to determine if teaching the new sugar guidelines, which now permit up to 10% of energy from added sugars, would modify dietary habits, metabolic control and perceived quality of life in free-living subjects with type 2 diabetes. In an eight month randomized controlled trial, 48 subjects with type 2 diabetes were taught, by a trained dietitian, either a conventional diabetic meal plan: conventional group (C) or one in which they could integrate the new sugar guidelines: sugar group (S). The idea that basin-like dynamics may influence or control the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) is investigated with idealized analytic and numerical models. A simple 2-layer analytic model is developed to predict the transport evolution with the wind stress amplitude. At very low forcing, a non-zero minimum is predicted. This is followed by two distinct dynamical regimes for stronger forcing: a linearly increasing Stommel regime and a saturation regime in which the transport ceases to increase. This thesis examines the concept of identity for new migrants in the context of a transcultural child psychiatry clinic. In particular, it analyses the evolution of feelings of otherness and power relations in the clinical request and the therapeutic process. It uses a multiple case study design to analyze six cases in depth and confront the perspectives of the involved actors (child, parents, therapists) at the time of the first encounter in the clinic and six months later. Study of the Entomophthorales infection in selected black fly populations from two outlets of a lake was conducted at the Reserve Faunique du Saint-Maurice (Quebec). Entomophaga near limoniae infected Simulium verecundum/rostratum, whereas Erynia curvispora predominantly parasitized Simulium decorum, and Erynia conica infected Simulium venustum and the Simulium verecundum/rostratum and Simulium vittatum complexes. This is the first report of the presence of Erynia conica and Entomophaga near limoniae in North America and Erynia curvispora in Canada. The formalism of effective potential method is first studied for usual field theory and extended to supersymmetric field theory. The specific case of supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics is then introduced. The superfields are shifted as required by Weinberg's method for the evaluation of effective potentials and superpropagators are derived with the method developed by Helayel-Neto for cases where supersymmetry is explicitly broken. Then, the one and two loop corrections to the effective potential may be calculated. These corrections are seen to be complex everywhere but at the minimum of the potential. In two widely discussed articles published in the Journal of Democracy over the last two years, Foa and Mounk (2016, 2017) argue that mass rates of support for democracy have been decreasing across Western democracies, pointing to a general but also a generational decline: this "democratic disconnect" is most visible among the youngest generations. This thesis investigates whether such a decline is really happening across consolidated democracies, using multilevel models to distinguish between age, period, and cohort effects. Carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen contents of the Earth's mantle are poorly constrained. Mantle xenoliths brought to the surface by alkaline lavas at 6 volcanic centers along the northwestern margin of North America provide a way to estimate the contents of these volatiles in the upper mantle. Carbon (C), hydrogen (H$ sb2$) and nitrogen (N$ sb2$) are contained as several C-H-N phases in these xenoliths and lavas; light isotopic C-H-N, C in carbonates, C and N$ sb2$ in fluid inclusions, and dissolved C, H$ sb2$ and N$ sb2$ in anhydrous and hydrous minerals. A study of muskrat population variables in southern Quebec did not allow differentiation between the quality of ditches bordered by corn fields and those bordered by hay fields. Annual turnover of adults and juveniles was very high in both ditch types. The average maximum density of muskrats was the second highest recorded in the literature. Muskrat activity was not predictive of activity of other co-occurring vertebrates. The direct relationship between the logarithm of the number of burrows and the number of muskrats showed the usefulness of this sign of presence as an indicator of population size. The first part analyzes Morin's work with a sustained attention given to the question of the essay as a specific literary and philosophical genre (with references to Vigneault, Lukacs, Adorno, Barthes). Repetitive presentation of any non-significant stimulus to an animal results in a decrement in the animal's response to that stimulus. This phenomenon, termed habituation, is distinguishable from fatigue and receptor adaptation in that it is long-lasting and in that the habituation is fairly specific to the repeated stimulus. The prevailing view of habituation is that it, like learning in general, results from an increase in the efficacy of neural transmission, but, unlike learning, this increased efficacy primarily affects inhibitory interneurons (e.g., Soko1ov, 1960; Hernandez-Peon, 1960; Jouvet, 1961). Microwave radio links, operating in the millimeter wave region, must account for the effects of rain when considering transmission loss. In this work, a theoretical model is used to generate the specific attenuations based on perturbation theory with spheroidal or Pruppacher-Pitter raindrop shapes, and Marshall-Palmer or Weibull drop size distributions. The specific attenuation is fitted to the power law relation with rain rate and the parameters are used in a two-component rain rate model in order to estimate the attenuation along the path. ABSTRACT This thesis is concerned with the investigation of the influence of damping on the frequencies of plane frames in the presence of rotational joint damping. Usually damping is ignored in dynamic analysis of structures, or is taken into account using the simple concept of Rayleigh damping. However, damping is always present, and must be considered for a realistic analysis of structures, especially if a matching is desired with frequencies obtained from vibration testing of the structure.
