In this study I investigate the influence and reception of Paulo Freire in Indonesia with a specific question in mind: To what extent has Freire influenced educational thought and practice in the country? This study shows that Paulo Freire has been known in Indonesia since the early 1970s, although he was at first familiar only to certain groups. In the 1980s, the discourse and practice of Freirean education was more extensive than in the 1970s, with both domains (discourse and practice) equally balanced. This thesis explores the thought of a prominent Indian Muslim thinker, Asghar Ali Engineer, on liberation theology and the status of women in Islam. In his elaboration of liberation theology, Engineer demonstrates that from its inception, Islam has sided with the oppressed and the weak. If it is interpreted from its theological as well as sociological context, he argues, Islam makes it clear that it promotes justice and equality. The juxtaposition of theological and sociological perspectives is crucial to any understanding of Engineer's thought on liberation theology. This study, through the lens of Activity Theory, focused on the induction and constructivist teaching practices of experienced teachers who were recently hired in a technologically advantaged middle school. Activity Theory was used not only to examine the induction practices but also to focus on constructivist practices with technology. Data sources consisted of using various instruments three of which were used for surveys, 11 interviews were employed to assess goals, and 18 classroom observations were carried out regarding constructivist practices. The presence of boron in plants was first recorded by Mittstein and Apoiger in 1857, who were able to find boric acid in the ash of seeds of Maesa picta, an Abyssinian plant belonging to the order Myrsinaceae. More recent workers have shown that boron occurs in small proportions in the ash of many kinds of plants. The uptakes of the radioactive hormones, 3H-estradiol-17β and 3H-cortisol, in bone cells were evaluated. Nuclear and cytoplasmic fractions were prepared from pulverized bone. Incubations were done in 3H-estradiol-17β, 3H-estradiol-17β plus tenfold amount of unlabelled estradiol, 3H-cortisol, and 3H-cortisol plus tenfold unlabelled cortisol. There was no difference in the uptake of 3H-estradiol-17β alone or the 3H-estradiol-17β plus unlabeled estradiol, leading to the conclusion that there is no specific binding of estrogens in bone cells. Cortisol uptake studies initially showed competitive uptake, but this uptake was later proven to be due to Transcortin, a plasma corticosteroid binding globulin. The effect of thermal stimulation of the skin and the pre­optic region of the brain on posterior hypothalamic neurons was studied in anesthetized and unanesthetized cats. Both sites of stimulation are known to have thermosensory functions in temperature regulation: the recording site has known thermogenic and heat conservation functions. Units responsive to one or both sites of stimulation were found. The majority increased their activity with decreasing temperature. Tissue eosinophilia is a prominent feature of allergic inflammatory diseases that may be in part mediated through the regulation of eosinophil survival at inflammatory site. T helper 2 type cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-5, Granulocyte Macrophage Colony Stimulating Factor (GM-CSF), are the important mediators of allergic inflammation leading to prolonged survival of eosinophils. Due to the proposed central role of eosinophils in asthma and other allergic airway diseases, there is considerable interest, to determine the mechanisms that regulate eosinophil functions and accumulation. In spite of its spontaneous and improvised character, the informal sector has provided virtually the only appropriate housing, in terms of the organization of the outdoor space, for the urban poor of the developing countries. Through an analysis of the outdoor spaces in Eziukwu-Aba, a low-income and informal settlement in Aba, Nigeria, this thesis investigates the organization and mode of use of outdoor spaces, in relation to the day-to-day activities of the urban poor. Understanding and optimizing the impact of applying physical modification techniques holds the potential of enhancing food security in non-waxy rice producing communities through the development of acceptable novel rice-based products. This study investigated the impact of selected modification technologies on the physicochemical, rheological and thermal characteristics of non-waxy rice flours.Physicochemical properties varied for all the non-waxy rice cultivars studied. Protein content ranged between 8.47 to 9.24%, while amylose content was between 25.90 and 30.85%. Aircraft engine emissions from civil aviation cause several adverse effects to the atmospheric environment. These emissions are among the known major contributors to changes in atmospheric chemistry and global climate change. One way in which the international community has responded to the problem has been the adoption of several international treaties, generally dealing with subjects such as protection of the ozone layer, long-range transboundary air pollution, and global climate change. This inquiry involves two case studies that examine the beliefs of two selected ESL teachers in Zimbabwe teaching at the secondary school level. The study looks at the various nested contexts of the two case studies at the international, national, provincial, school and classroom levels with respect to Zimbabwe before and after independence in 1980. The analysis of the nested contexts aims to show how the various factors at the different levels impinge on the ESL instruction of the two teachers. Over the last decade the law of judicial jurisdiction has undergone profound changes in Canada. Chief among the factors that prompted evolution is the recognition of fairness as a guiding principle in the elaboration of jurisdictional rules. This thesis presents the consequences such recognition has already had and should have on the granting of freezing measures, those specific provisional measures aimed at freezing a defendant's assets pending litigation. We have investigated the effect of Trypanosoma cruzi on the structural and functional properties of high density lipoprotein (HDL). These studies revealed that infection with T. cruzi leads to truncation of apoA-I with subsequent loss of HDL species, most notably, poorly lipidated prebeta-HDL subparticles. When lipid-free apoA-I or lipid-reconstituted apoA-I were incubated with various forms of T. cruzi, either alone or during macrophage infection, loss of full-length apoA-I was readily apparent, with concomitant replacement by lower molecular weight peptides. Coronary artery disease (CAD) remains the primary source of global mortality. Multiple epidemiologic studies support a low level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) to be an independent risk factor for CAD. We believe that a complete understanding of the mechanisms underlying HDL biogenesis, metabolism, and function will aid in defining the therapeutic potential of raising HDL in treating CAD. This thesis consists of five inter-related studies with the central unifying theme of HDL physiology. Glycosomes are subcellular organelles that are evolutionarily related to the peroxisomes of higher eukaryotes. The Leishmania glycosome performs various metabolic processes that are essential for the survival of these parasites, such as the glycolytic process. Proteins that are destined for import into the glycosome interact selectively with specific cytosolic receptors peroxin 5(PEX5) or PEX7. The PEX5-protein complex migrates toward the glycosomal membrane where it interacts with PEX14, a vital step for protein important into the glycosome.
