This study focuses on the seismic analysis and behaviour of continuous 4-span bridges. Different methods of analyses including linear multi-mode analysis, inelastic time history analysis and incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) are used for the seismic evaluations of bridges in this study.This thesis includes two main parts. In the first part the seismic behaviour of bridges with different column heights (i.e., irregularity due to different column stiffnesses) is studied. The seismic evaluations are carried out in the transverse and longitudinal directions of bridges to recognize the important aspects which influence the seismic behaviour. Women's role in contemporary Iranian economy has either been ignored or portrayed as suppressed by the state's so-called "Islamic" ideologies and policies. This thesis argues that while the post-revolutionary state's Islamization attempted to create a particular gender system that excludes women from the labour market, it has proved to be unsuccessful. This imposed gender system has failed to achieve its goals due to both unstable economic conditions and through the active role women have played in opposing this set of ideologies. Recent advances in vision–language foundation models have enabled new possibilities in high-resolution, semantically aligned medical image synthesis, an increasingly important capability for improving data efficiency, robustness, and transparency in clinical AI systems. Yet, existing approaches remain limited by three key challenges: (1) the absence of principled methods for disentangling and controlling latent factors of variation in high-resolution medical images using vision-language foundation models. (2) the absence of sufficiently high-resolution medical image generation models hinders the faithful synthesis of clinically relevant fine-grained anatomical details, limiting their suitability for diagnostic scenarios that depend on subtle structural cues. This thesis project is dedicated to making translations visible and disentangling the roles of the author, place of publication, and language in carving the paths that German fiction travels in the world of literature. These channels of transfer are documented in archives of national literatures and this project presents an unprecedented study of translated German fiction by sourcing bibliographic data of translations from the German National Library. The hippocampal formation is interesting because of the wide range of functions that have been attributed to it. The older anatomists, impressed by its close relation to the pre-pyriform or entorhinal cortex, attributed to it a role in olfaction. Comparative anatomists have noticed, however, that in anosmic animals such as the porpoise, which have no peripheral olfactory apparatus, the hippocampal cortex is well differentiated. Furthermore, Swann (1934) and Allen (1940, 1941) have shown that ablation of the hippocampus and fornix does not interfere with the retention of conditioned responses to olfactory stimuli, or olfactory discrimination performance.  Lire la suite

The purpose of the thesis is the examination of the Minimax Theorem of the Theory of Games. Considering a two person zero sum game, the equivalence of the theorem to the existence of “good” strategies in any finite game is shown, and implications to certain types of games discussed. Although there are several independent proofs of the theorem, most fall into two broad categories--the one using the theory of convex sets, the other the fixed point property of certain transformations. Astrocytes respond to injury of the central nervous system (CNS) in a process termed reactive astrogliosis. While classically considered detrimental to CNS function, the purpose of reactive astrogliosis is now considered by some to promote CNS recovery. The functional role of reactive astrocytes may be clarified if the molecular mediators of astrogliosis can be identified. This thesis explores the role of cytokines in modulating parameters of astrogliosis both in vitro and in vivo. Studies with astrocytes isolated from uninjured adult mouse brains suggest that these cells have different biological characteristics as compared to neonatal murine astrocytes. The chelating agent ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) is promising. The ligand is more effective in removing the metal contaminants from soils than HCl. In a batch experiment, EDTA released a large portion of metals from soils to soil extracts. A batch method was also developed for recovering the metal contaminants in the resulting EDTA soil-extracts. Using an anion exchange resin (AER) AG 3-x4, up to 99% of the Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn were removed from the leachates. In this work we describe ultra-high vacuum fabrication of a nanoscale system that reveals Coulomb blockade at room temperature and its characterization by single-electron sensitive electrostatic force microscopy (e-EFM). The system consists of Au nanoparticles separated from an Fe(001) back electrode by a crystalline ultra-thin NaCl film. Due to the small size of the nanoparticles (3.5 nm high), the Coulomb blockade can be observed at room temperature. An atomic force microscopy (AFM) cantilever is used as a movable gate to charge individual nanoparticles via single-electron tunneling from the back electrode. The quartz microstructures and microfabrics in tectonites representing greenschist to granulite facies conditions are examined to assess the factors influencing their development. The c-axis patterns range from random distributions to small, great, and crossed circle girdles, and to c-axes maxima. The small circle girdles, the most common fabrics at all metamorphic grades, are oriented at 30(DEGREES)-40(DEGREES) and 50(DEGREES)-70(DEGREES) about the axes of shortening and extension, respectively. The c-axis orientations of the recrystallized grains bear no relationship to those of the host grains suggesting that host control, though important initially, is commonly overridden by strain controls. Across a number of theoretical orientations, the manifestation and working through of clients' central relationship patterns is considered to be an important aspect of psychotherapy process. The Core Conflictual Relationship Theme (CCRT) method was developed as an operationalization of transference, or the transfer of an individual's core relational schemas across relationships. Studies of therapeutic transference using pathological client samples have shown that there is some overlap between clients' relationship patterns with others and those that emerge with the therapist. This dissertation investigates, within a Government-Binding framework, the licensing mechanisms which regulate the distribution of sentence-internal constituents. It is proposed that the licensing requirements apply across components, in the spirit of the Projection Principle of Chomsky (1981). Under the extended view of licensing proposed here ("Universal Licensing"), maximal projections must comply with the appropriate licensing requirements at every syntactic level of representation. This allows for a more constrained model of grammar, under which a number of facts follow in a principled way; this is the case particularly with respect to constructions involving null operators. Performative Autopathographies examines firsthand representations of physical illness produced by selected professional artists since 1980. Through pointed case study analyses, it shows how contemporary autopathographies function beyond therapeutic expression by articulating political, aesthetic, and metaphysical positions (e.g., autothanatography) in relation to lived experience. Notions of pathography, performativity, acting forms, confession, dialogism, and the ethics of response are presented in the Introduction. Chapter 1 reviews the literature relevant to the emergent field of “cultural illness studies,” situated at a disciplinary crossroads between medical humanities and visual / cultural studies. The incorporation of divalent metals into calcite grown from low-temperature (~25°C) aqueous solutions is quantified by partition coefficients (DMe). However, DMe values are commonly derived from bulk analyses of calcite seeds, a practice that underestimates the effect of differential incorporation at symmetrically nonequivalent sectors (i.e, sector zoning) and limits the application of DMe in diagenetic and environmental studies. This study sheds some light on the effect of sector zoning on DMe by investigating the growth kinetics and morphology of calcite and the incorporation trends of divalent Cd, Mn and Zn. AbstractThe enormous potential for thermal energy storage in underground mines has yet to be utilized, however, stope coupled heat exchangers (SCHE) are a viable novel technology that can take advantage of mining backfill methods. Backfilled mining stopes provide a unique opportunity to implement non-linear borehole heat exchangers, as the geometry is not limited to the shape of the borehole. A helical SCHE can take advantage of the secondary flow created by the helix, offering superior fluid mixing and heat exchange compared to a straight pipe borehole heat exchanger. Two European leaf-eating beetles, Galerucella calmariensis L. and G. pusilla (Duft.)(Chrysomelidae:Coleoptera) were released at four sites in Quebec to manage the semi-aquatic exotic weed, purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria L.). Protocols for monitoring the Galerucella populations and detecting changes in the plant communities were implemented. In addition, the effect of seeding with native plants species in conjunction with Galerucella herbivory was tested in an experiment at a purple loosestrife stand in Ontario. Ice wedges are prominent and precarious features in continuous permafrost environments. As the Arctic regions begin to warm, concern over the potential effects of ice wedge melt-out has become an immediate issue, receiving much attention in periglacial literature. This study estimates the volume of ice wedges over large areas of polar desert in the Canadian High Arctic (Eureka on Ellesmere Island (N80°01', W85°43') and at Expedition Fiord on Axel Heiberg Island (N79°23', W90°59')) through the use of high resolution imagery and the improved capabilities of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools. This thesis problematizes the way in which the Vietnamese Buddhist Thích Nhất Hạnh is represented sympathetically in academic discourse, and investigates how this representation conceals Orientalist methodologies which can inform scholarship about modern or engaged Buddhism. This study uses the framework of Jane Naomi Iwamura's conception of the Oriental Monk, and focuses on two texts in particular: Sallie B. King's Socially Engaged Buddhism and David Loy's The Great Awakening: a Buddhist social theory.
