1955 — The effects of freezing and cold storage on bacteria in milks.
    Résumé

Numerous investigators have confirmed the early work of H. W. Conn (1889a), (1889b), (1903), and Conn and Esten (1904) in regard to the effects of cold storage upon bacteria in milk. In general, these workers have agreed that 40-50 F (4.4-10 C) is the maximum temperature for the storage of milk; they recognized, however, the fact that bacterial growth does occur not only at refrigeration temperatures but at and near the freezing point.  Lire la suite

2013 — Scalar / contaminant source locating in turbulent flows

2026 — On the analysis and applications of a class of functional Lie group integrators

Five "critical" utopias by Quebec women writers ( L'Euguelionne and Le pique-nique sur l'Acropole by Louky Bersianik; Le silence de la Cite and Chroniques du Pays des Meres by Elisabeth Vonarburg and L'Espace du diamant by Esther Rochon) make up the corpus of this thesis which aims to explore how the three novelists exploit the possibilities of this particular form of contemporary utopian writing. For these authors, the transformation of society depends upon the transformation of the individual. We therefore propose to examine the ways in which Bersianik, Vonarburg and Rochon represent, through the experiences of their characters, the social …  Lire la suite

2016 — Effects of near-inertial forcing on the energetics of a wind-driven primitive equation channel

1940 — The effect of surrounding media on the apparent volume of cellulose.
    Résumé

Cellulosic materials have been and are of great and varied use in the world today. They form the major portion of all plant growth. In reality, cellulose is the backbone of plant structure. Since it occurs in such immense quantities and is comparatively inactive chemically, it is of utmost importance in our commercial life, forming as it does, the mainstay of the pulp, paper and textile industries. Its modified forms are used in a wide array of products from rayon silk and celluloid to high explosives. In any investigation into the properties of cellulosic substances and their relation to water, …  Lire la suite

2014 — Time's up for Habermas and Laclau? Democracy, politics and political time
    Résumé

This thesis explores the relationship between time (temporality) and politics. Featuring analyses of Barbara Adam’s multidimensional theory of time, Ernesto Laclau’s agonistic account of radical democracy, and Jürgen Habermas’ theory of deliberative democracy, this thesis presents two main arguments. The first, which borrows from scholarship outside of democratic theory, is that political time(s) is political because it is constructed, plural, and determines the exercise or reproduction of power. This argument is illustrated with a second, namely, that changing the tempo of either Habermas’ or Laclau’s political time frame would render the latter incompatible with how each theorist understands democratic politics. …  Lire la suite

1988 — Biochemical and pharmacological studies of the hepatic alpha1 r-adrenergic receptor
    Résumé

The structure and the regulation of the hepatic $ alpha sb1$-adrenergic receptors have been studied in the rat. The in vitro incubation of isolated liver cells in a serum-free buffer for 4 hr leads to the conversion of the adrenergic activation of glycogen phosphorylase from an $ alpha sb1$- to a $ beta$-adrenoceptor-mediated event. This change is associated with no change in the glycogenolytic response to vasopressin and a reduction of the glycogenolytic response to glucagon. The time-dependent shift in the adrenergic control of glycogenolysis does not influence the density or the affinity of ($ sp3$H) prazosin-labeled $ alpha sb1$-receptors …  Lire la suite

2022 — Examining the neurochemical underpinnings of attachment: The role of endogenous opioids
    Résumé

For the developmentally immature and helpless newborns of humans and other mammalian species, survival in infancy is predicated on the ability to form stable, lasting bonds with caregivers who can offer nourishment, care, and protection from harm. Attachment theory postulates the existence of an evolved psychobiological system (called the attachment system) that supports maintenance of closeness with these caregivers in infancy (as well as throughout the lifespan). The endogenous opioid system, which plays a key role in mediating pleasure and pain, has been advanced as a potential substrate for the hedonic signalling needed to regulate attachment. Specifically, the brain opioid …

2011 — The Einstein constraint equations on compact 3-dimensional manifolds

Le travail d'Y. 2005 — Phosphoregulation of CdGAP and DCC, proteins involved in actin dynamics
    Résumé

The Rho GTPases are members of the Ras superfamily of small monomeric GTP binding proteins that regulate multiple cellular processes affecting both cell proliferation and cytoskeletal dynamics. They are positively and negatively regulated by the guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) and the GTPase-activating proteins (GAPS), respectively. In principle, extracellular signals such as growth factors and other agents bind to plasma membrane receptors and modulate Rho GTPase function through intracellular mechanisms that affect GEF or GAP activities. There is now compelling evidence that both receptors and cytoplasmic proteins implicated in Rho GTPase signaling are modulated by post-translational modifications such as phosphorylation. …  Lire la suite

The purpose of this study was to determine if islets of Langerhans transplanted into the submucosal compartment of the duodenum survive after implantation, and to establish their replication rate. Our goal was also to evaluate both the number of islets needed to achieve normoglycemia in diabetes and the potential of the implant to maintain glucose homeostasis. Experiments were performed using Syrian hamsters. Islets of Langerhans were obtained by collagenase digestion of pancreata and purified on a BSA gradient. Following transplantation, islet morphology and insulin synthesis were maintained. Normoglycemia was not achieved in hyperglycemic animals transplanted with $<$800 islets, but was …  Lire la suite

2023 — The role of the Vestibular System in the Control of Locomotion
    Résumé

Background: Fundamental questions in the field of motor control concern the understanding of how human movements are produced and controlled, and determining what systems in the brain are involved in this control. In our research project, we will investigate the role of the vestibular (VS) system in the control of lower limb movements at different phases of gait. We will compare the traditional view of direct programming of motor output by the brain to an alternate view based on the physical principle that the brain controls movements by changing the referent configuration of the body. According to this view, discrepancies …  Lire la suite

2001 — Evaluation of NARCM using aircraft observation from NARE
    Résumé

The Northern Aerosol Regional Climate Model (NARCM) is being developed in order to better understand how aerosols affect the Canadian climate. NARCM uses microphysical and chemical parameterizations that enable it to predict the evolution of the aerosol spectrum using the concentration and composition in 12 size-segregated bins as prognostic variables. In this study, two aerosol species are considered as prognostic variables within NARCM: sulphate and sea-salt. The sulphur species concentrations and aerosol distributions simulated by NARCM are evaluated against clear-sky in-situ aircraft measurement taken off the coast of Nova Scotia during the North Atlantic Regional Experiment (HARE). NARCM demonstrates skill …  Lire la suite

    2012 — «Citrobacter rodentium» causes fatal diarrhea through R-spondin 2-mediated activation of Wnt signaling

2003 — Use of volume-based 3-D seismic attribute analysis to characterize physical property distribution : a case study to delineate reservoir heterogeneity at the Appleton Field, SW Alabama
    Résumé

The use of seismic attribute studies in the petroleum industry is fast spreading. Seismic attribute studies entail the integration of derived attributes from 3-D seismic data with well log, core and/or outcrop data (through multivariate linear regression, neural networks, etc.) to estimate and project physical properties in areas of sparse data control. Because of the accuracy of this technique in predicting the subsurface distribution of physical properties in 3-D space, and delineating depositionally and non-depositionally controlled trends not readily apparent from other methods commonly used in sedimentary geology (e.g., facies modeling, geostatistics, and sequence stratigraphy), it becomes an important tool …  Lire la suite

The experiments to be described in this thesis were undertaken to obtain stocks of the fungus Aspergillus nidulans containing translocations between various pairs of linkage groups. The translocations were identified genetically, in gamma-irradiated diploid colonies. The chromosomes in this fungus are very small, but some can be identified individually (Elliott, 1960). The stocks characterized here will be used later in an attempt to associate each chromosome with the appropriate linkage group. The method used located not only translocations, but recessive lethals and some point mutants as well.  Lire la suite

Phosphorothioate oligonucleotides (PS-DNA), in which one of the non-bridging oxygen atoms of the internucleotide linkage is replaced by a sulfur atom, have been extensively studied and are among the most widely used "antisense" oligonucleotides (AON). However, the isomeric analogue, in which one of the two bridging oxygen atom is replaced by sulfur has not been extensively investigated, as such, this prompted our interest towards the construction of oligonucleotides containing the …  Lire la suite

The role of tryptophan availability in the regulation of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT) metabolism and function has been examined in rats and humans, by manipulation of dietary components. It was demonstrated that in the rat, protein and carbohydrate can alter 5HT levels in peripheral tissues as well as brain. A new method for the determination of 5HT in the cisternal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of the rat was developed and used as an index of functional 5HT, using pharmacological agents known to act on 5HT function. Using this technique, it was then shown that tryptophan administration potentiates the release of 5HT when the …  Lire la suite
