The purpose of this study was to obtain a picture of the features of the Liberal Arts Honours Program at Vanier College, St. Laurent, Montreal, which contributed to students' preparation for university. The chief sources of information were drawn from students, teachers, and administrators. A questionnaire was administered to fifty-three students. An interview-protocol was also used to collect in-depth data from six first-year and six second-year students, and six teachers, and three administrators. Analysis of data suggested that 70% of students and also 80% of the majority of the participants in this study were satisfied with Vanier College's pre-university program. …  Read more

During the 1949 summer field season the writer had the opportunity of mapping the geology of two groups of claims for Falconbridge Nickel Mines limited. The location of these groups, in western Ontario and south eastern Manitoba, is indicated on the accompanying map of the general area. A geophysical survey and diamond drilling program had been completed during the winter months and over the break up period on the Werner Lake group. This thesis explores the relationship between time (temporality) and politics. Featuring analyses of Barbara Adam’s multidimensional theory of time, Ernesto Laclau’s agonistic account of radical democracy, and Jürgen Habermas’ theory of deliberative democracy, this thesis presents two main arguments. The first, which borrows from scholarship outside of democratic theory, is that political time(s) is political because it is constructed, plural, and determines the exercise or reproduction of power. The structure and the regulation of the hepatic $ alpha sb1$-adrenergic receptors have been studied in the rat. The in vitro incubation of isolated liver cells in a serum-free buffer for 4 hr leads to the conversion of the adrenergic activation of glycogen phosphorylase from an $ alpha sb1$- to a $ beta$-adrenoceptor-mediated event. This change is associated with no change in the glycogenolytic response to vasopressin and a reduction of the glycogenolytic response to glucagon. For the developmentally immature and helpless newborns of humans and other mammalian species, survival in infancy is predicated on the ability to form stable, lasting bonds with caregivers who can offer nourishment, care, and protection from harm. The Rho GTPases are members of the Ras superfamily of small monomeric GTP binding proteins that regulate multiple cellular processes affecting both cell proliferation and cytoskeletal dynamics. They are positively and negatively regulated by the guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) and the GTPase-activating proteins (GAPS), respectively. In principle, extracellular signals such as growth factors and other agents bind to plasma membrane receptors and modulate Rho GTPase function through intracellular mechanisms that affect GEF or GAP activities. The purpose of this study was to determine if islets of Langerhans transplanted into the submucosal compartment of the duodenum survive after implantation, and to establish their replication rate. Our goal was also to evaluate both the number of islets needed to achieve normoglycemia in diabetes and the potential of the implant to maintain glucose homeostasis. Experiments were performed using Syrian hamsters. Islets of Langerhans were obtained by collagenase digestion of pancreata and purified on a BSA gradient. The effect of temperature and duration of leaf wetness (DLW) on sporulation of Bremia lactucae was determined for lettuce cv. Ithaca. A single spore isolate of B. lactucae was produced and was identified using lettuce differential lines each of which had known gene for resistance. The Northern Aerosol Regional Climate Model (NARCM) is being developed in order to better understand how aerosols affect the Canadian climate. NARCM uses microphysical and chemical parameterizations that enable it to predict the evolution of the aerosol spectrum using the concentration and composition in 12 size-segregated bins as prognostic variables. In this study, two aerosol species are considered as prognostic variables within NARCM: sulphate and sea-salt. The sulphur species concentrations and aerosol distributions simulated by NARCM are evaluated against clear-sky in-situ aircraft measurement taken off the coast of Nova Scotia during the North Atlantic Regional Experiment (HARE). Winnipegosis reef complexes probably consist of coalesced buildups, 75 to 100 m thick. They occur on a platform, 10 to 15 m thick. Basin sediments, 10 m thick, surround the complexes. Six facies are identified: (1) platform (lower and upper platform subfacies); (2) buildup interior; (3) buildup flank (laminated, bioturbated, cemented subfacies); (4) organic rim; (5) stromatolite cap; (6) basin (Brightholme, Ratner Members). Diagenesis occurred in four diagenetic environments: (1) open marine; (2) subaerial/meteoric; (3) restricted marine/shallow subsurface; (4) deeper subsurface. The experiments to be described in this thesis were undertaken to obtain stocks of the fungus Aspergillus nidulans containing translocations between various pairs of linkage groups. The translocations were identified genetically, in gamma-irradiated diploid colonies. The chromosomes in this fungus are very small, but some can be identified individually (Elliott, 1960). The stocks characterized here will be used later in an attempt to associate each chromosome with the appropriate linkage group. The role of tryptophan availability in the regulation of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT) metabolism and function has been examined in rats and humans, by manipulation of dietary components. It was demonstrated that in the rat, protein and carbohydrate can alter 5HT levels in peripheral tissues as well as brain. A new method for the determination of 5HT in the cisternal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of the rat was developed and used as an index of functional 5HT, using pharmacological agents known to act on 5HT function.
