In recent years there has been an increasing interest in the field of insect microbiology. There are several aspects to this relatively young science and each has contributed to this increasing interest. Among the more important aspects are the following: a) symbiotic relationships between insects and microorganisms, b) human, animal, and plant diseases carried by insects, c) epizootic diseases among insect populations. In 1949 Bird and Whalen (5) noted the presence of a microsporidian in field populations of the spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.). As studies of the mortality factors affecting the spruce budworm were intensified and attempts were made to work out life tables for this insect, it became increasingly important to know more about this protozoan. Although the Microsporidia have been known since the time of Pasteur and wall over 100 species have been described, little attention has been paid to the affects of these parasites on their hosts. This thesis is an examination of the various ways in which marijuana, its use, and its users have historically been signified, within both hegemonic and subcultural discourses, from marijuana's origins in antiquity through its North American prohibition in the earlier part of the twentieth century. Attention is given to how this history, and prohibition in particular, has informed contemporary North American significations of the drug, its use and its users.  Lire la suite

We characterize the equilibrium and nonequilibrium behavior of two random magnetic systems: the moderately frustrated Heisenberg ferromagnet, and the disordered magnetic domain structure characteristic of Barkhausen noise. We present the first large scale numerical study of the moderately frustrated Heisenberg model in three dimensions, determining the nature of ordering at phase boundaries, and in particular that at a claimed re-entrant transition. We find the re-entrance only involves a change of short-range order and hence is not a thermodynamic transition. This is in excellent agreement with experimental studies. […]  Lire la suite

This case study explored the personal and professional lives of 10 Cégep physical and health education (PHE) teachers. The participants, between 32-59 years, were PHE educators at Cégeps within a large Canadian city and its surrounding areas. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the PHE teachers about their experiences instructing at the Cégep level. Rich discussions were generated to explore the roles and responsibilities of the participants within the Cégepat which they taught. Data analyses were conducted on the verbatim transcriptions of the interviews. Four themes emerged from the data. The object of this work is to present data relating to the biology of the arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus (L.) of Nettilling Lake, Baffin Island, District of Franklin. The data presented wr.e collected by the author during the summer of 1956 when the first limnological investigation of the lake was undertaken. Observations were made on the habits and distribution of the char; the length, weight, sex, stomach contents, and condition of the gonads were recorded; otoliths for age determinations, parasites, egg samples, and whole specimens were brought back for further analysis.  Lire la suite

A definition of difficult labour was developed after reviewing the literature, consulting with experts, and examining alternatives. Difficult labour, in primiparas, was defined as either prolonged labour with vaginal delivery, longer than 15 hours from admission to full dilatation, or cesarean section after admission for uncomplicated labour. This measure proved, to a satisfactory degree, practical, reliable and valid. A study of predisposing factors, measured prior to labour onset, was conducted in 1,125 primiparas at two hospitals, a community hospital and a high-risk referral hospital. This thesis proposes a method of solving nonlinear mechanics problems using parametric or non-parametric cubic splines. A wide variety of mechanics problems lead to initial and/or boundary-value problems. By the introduction of splines, the foregoing problems can be formulated as algebraic ones, their solutions thus reducing to those of a nonlinear algebraic system. This method allows the problem to be formulated as a nonlinear overdetermined system of algebraic equations, which is then solved by the Newton-Gauss method, which assures monotonical convergence. The long tradition in the arts of the Hunt, domestic and exotic, as a surrogate for war in peacetime is reflected in the Amiens Hunting Series (1736-1739) along with influences from the waning years of Louis XIV and early trends in the reign of Louis XV. Two of Francois Boucher's lesser known works form part of the Amiens canvases executed for Louis XV's private gallery at Versailles. Carle Van Loo, Charles Parrocel, Jean-Francois de Troy, Jean-Baptiste Pater and Nicolas Lancret contributed to the Series, but Boucher's work is unique due probably to his study of the hunts of Peter Paul …  Lire la suite

Criticism of Michael Ondaatje's prose emphasizes the author's deconstruction of familiar binary oppositions as he challenges history and authority. The criticism, however, neglects the opposition between men and women. This omission is surprising, considering the remarkable transition in the representation of women throughout Ondaatje's prose. Women in The Collected Works of Billy the Kid (1970) and Coming Through Slaughter (1976) are objectified: lacking the tools for self-representation, the women are framed as sites of sexuality, negativity, and darkness. Germ cells are a totipotent stem cell line where meiosis occurs; without germ cell formation sexual and types of asexual reproduction cannot occur. Drosophila germ cell formation depends on a specialized cytoplasm which is at the posterior of early embryos. The germ plasm in Drosophila contains electron dense structures called polar granules. Similar electron dense structures are found in the germ line of many metazoan species. This thesis examines the polar granule component, TUDOR and its molecular function in Drosophila germ cell formation and polar granule assembly. Inactivating mutations of the TGF-beta signaling pathway, including SMAD4, have been identified in a wide variety of human tumors and can lead to resistance to TGF-beta induced growth arrest. SMAD4 itself has been firmly established as a tumor suppressor while despite the massive information gathered on TGF-beta signaling the contribution of SMAD4 inactivation in tumor progression remains elusive. It is largely unknown which particular genes involved in tumor progression require SMAD4 for their transcriptional regulation. This thesis starts with an overview of the historical record tied to the birth of a new nation studied by Alexis de Tocqueville and Henry Steele Commager. It singles out the works of Henry Nash Smith and Eugene D. Genovese for an understanding, respectively, of the "myth of the frontier" tied to the conquest of the American West and the "plantation myth" that sustained slavery in the American South. As a preliminary to the study of the reactions involved in the bleaching of chemical wood pulps, it seemed desirable to investigate the action of alkaline chlorine on various phenols analogous to those which have been isolated in degradative studies of lignins. For example, catechol and guaiacol have been obtained by zinc dust distillation (1), protocatechuic and veratric acids by alkali fusion (2, 3, 4) and vanillin and syringaldehyde by nitrobenzene oxidation (5, 6) of lignins. Within the last decade the use of anhydrous ammonia as a source of nitrogen for plants has gained considerable popularity in the United States of America. Several workers have investigated crop response to gaseous ammonia in comparative studies between the gas and solid nitrogenous fertilizers. Field and laboratory studies involving the capacity of the soil to retain ammonia-nitrogen applied as a gas or in solution have also been conducted. Still other workers have investigated the effects of varying concentrations of ammonia-nitrogen upon soil microorganisms and the nitrifying capacity of soils.  Lire la suite

Although auditors engage in considerable social interaction (Gibbins & Mason, 1988; Solomon, 1987), little is known about how social interaction influences an auditor's moral reasoning process. In order to address this gap, this study used an experiment to examine the effect of social influence on 288 auditors' moral reasoning on realistic moral dilemmas. The results of this study indicate that social interaction influences the moral reasoning of auditors. Auditors' level of prescriptive reasoning appears to increase after engaging in discussion of a realistic moral dilemma, particularly for those which discuss dilemmas with others at high levels of moral development, while …  Lire la suite

Fas Ligand (FasL) binds to the Fas receptor to induce apoptosis or activate other signaling pathways. FasL can also transduce "reverse signals" and thus participate in bidirectional signaling. The FasL intracellular domain contains consensus sequences for phosphorylation and a proline rich protein interaction domain. This latter region of FasL has previously been implicated in FasL reverse signaling and regulation of FasL surface expression. In this report, we sought to identify novel FasL interacting proteins to help understand signaling through and trafficking of this death factor. Some copper sulphide minerals recrystallized when heated in a temperature gradient in an argon-sulphur atmosphere, and acicular and lenticular crystals grew down gradient. The crystal composition was determined by the composition of the starting material, temperature, and the sulphur vapour pressure. This thesis attempts to show that the mood and expression of English Satire is Hebrew in tone and inspiration. The introduction consists of an outline showing the efficacy of satire, and an attempt to give an adequate definition of satire. It is found from this study, that there is no absolute definition, but that true satire must contain humour, at least the semblance of a purpose and good literary form. This dissertation is intended to demonstrate the presence of a contemporary gnostic spirit in the novels of Robertson Davies. The dominance of Protestant puritanism in English Canadian culture is a frequent theme in the literature of the nation. In his writing, Robertson Davies counters the repressive dynamics of a society shaped by puritanism with an appeal to an alternate vision. This vision, which places greater value on self-knowledge, bears a strong affinity to the precepts of the ancient gnostics. The rapid growth of nucleic acid therapeutics has exponentially increased the demand for synthetic, chemically modified oligonucleotides. Solid-phase oligonucleotide synthesis (SPOS) using phosphoramidite chemistry is currently the gold-standard for the synthesis of therapeutic oligonucleotides at all scales. Despite regularly achieving very high (>99%) coupling yields and a simple purification process, SPOS relies on huge volumes of toxic and flammable organic solvents (acetonitrile, pyridine) which is a huge issue both economically and environmentally. This thesis attempts to show that the role of religion in the lives of the men of Pratt's narrative poetry is significant in an analysis of heroism. Through an exploration of the poet's personal concept of religion, biographically and in the poetry, it becomes apparent that the example of Christ is established as a criterion by which human action can be judged. The heroic actions of the human figures of the major narratives are often prompted by faith. Pratt's primary focus, however, was on man and his potential.
