This dissertation is based on the ongoing concern surrounding boys’ underperformance in literacy. One explanatory framework suggests that boys have poorer literacy outcomes than girls due to a slower development of emergent literacy skills. However, the possible origins of sex differences in the development of foundational literacy skills remain a matter of question. One hypothesis is that boys have a weaker development of executive function—cognitive processing skills such as response inhibition, attentional inhibition, and working memory. Within the thought of Bernard Lonergan, is described a universal dynamic structure immanent within intellectual, moral, and religious consciousness. In Insight: A Study of Human Understanding, his analysis of the invariant pattern of that structure grounds a cognitional theory, an epistemology, and a metaphysics which then enables him to propose an ethic based on the structure of the good as immanent within every act of rational self-consciousness. In the period between the granting of self-government in 1923 and 1938, the 'native' policy formulated by Europeans in colonial Zimbabwe had three dimensions. The first was a land and agricultural policy designed to restrict competition from Africans in the produce market. The second was a labour policy addressed at the chronic labour shortages in the European mining and agricultural sectors. The third was a series of control measures seeking to impede black political organization. A study is performed to assess the utility of a computer numerically controlled (CNC) mill to produce missing tissue compensating filters and for the delivery of intensity-modulated beams for inverse treatment planning. A computer aided machining (CAM) software is used to assist in the design and construction of such filters. Geometric measurements of stepped and wedged surfaces are made to examine the accuracy of surface milling. Results show that the deviation of the filter surfaces from design does not exceed 1.5%. Prelanding EMG responses in uniarticular and biarticular flexors and extensors of the leg were assessed during landing from jump-downs at a constant height (0.45 m) or randomly varying heights (0.35, 0.45 and 0.55 meters) in normal humans under four visual conditions: normal, occluded, stabilized by a visual conflict dome, and disrupted by stroboscopic flash at 8 Hz. Pressure sensitive foot-switches and video recordings of each jump-down from a sagittal view allowed the expression of EMG in temporal relation to limb trajectories and foot-ground contact. Twenty-five years ago a geomorphologist, N. M. Fenneman, discussed what he called “the circumference of geography”. On that circumference Fenneman placed climatology, biogeography, commercial geography, political geography, mathematical geography, and physiography (geomorphology); all of which overlapped, in both data and techniques, the territories of related disciplines. An indirect crisis, the terrorist attacks of September 1 1 , is used as a catalyst to review the tasks of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Regime. However, it is insufficient to initiate a comprehensive change to the regime to incorporate the challenge from non-state nuclear terrorism. There will not be a change of regime, understood in terms of principles and norms. Yet, potential for change within the regime exists, with regard to rules and procedures. This is demonstrated by analysing the organisational and state levels of the regime through a synthesis of rationalist and weak-cognitivist assumptions. You can express a different story through art. What happens when you use arts-based inquiry to explore environmental knowledge? How can artistic expression value and construct alternative knowledges that might otherwise be overlooked or silenced? Holistic and justice-oriented trends in environmental education argue for the integration of social identity within ecological issues. This participatory community-based Photo-Voice project takes place in the rural communities around Tiwai Island in Sierra Leone. The project investigates environmental, community and cultural assets to be protected for future generations. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe illness associated with impairment in key areas of functioning (American Psychiatric Association, 2013) and burdensome societal costs (Lim, Jacobs, Ohinmaa, Schopflocher, & Dewa, 2008). It is a substantial contributor to the global burden of disease (World Health Organization, 2008), and recent estimates indicate that nearly 20% of individuals living in Canada and the United States will experience at least one depressive episode in their lifetime (Kessler & Bromet, 2013; Patten, 2009). Transgenic mice lacking RPTPsigma, a type IIa receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase, exhibit severe neural-developmental deficits. Continued expression of RPTPsigma in the adult suggests that it plays a functional role in the mature nervous system. To determine if RPTPsigma might influence axonal regeneration, the time course of regeneration following facial nerve crush in wild type and RPTPsigma (-/-) mice was compared. Mice lacking RPTPsigma exhibited an accelerated rate of functional recovery, suggesting that RPTPsigma slows the extension of regenerating axons. Hydraulic retention time (HRT) might contribute to the substantial variation in phosphorus-chlorphyll and chlorophyll-zooplankton models because rapid flushing might depress plankton development. However, for a world-wide data set. HRT was not correlated with chlorophyll. Total phosphorus had no effect on chlorphyll when hypereutrophic sites were considered separately, but chlorophyll was negatively related to HRT. Short term HRT, averaged over periods up to one month, was not correlated with chlorophyll, or zooplankton biomass, in seven impoundments on the St. Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers. Many elderly patients remain in acute care hospitals while they await transfer to Long Term Care (LTC) facilities. Complex problems, common for this special group of patients, place them at risk for delayed discharge. Discharge planning, for these patients, has become an increasingly critical activity for social workers. This study examined factors that predict the risks for inappropriate hospitalization for 244 patients waiting for LTC in 1999, and it explored the LTC application process to identify barriers to delayed discharges. Both the counterculture and its music will be examined using the concepts of heteronomy, autonomy, and theonomy and their dialectical relationship according to Paul Tillich's theory of religion and culture. The main themes beneath the emergence of the counterculture will be outlined, and the ways in which the dominant culture of the time may be considered what Tillich describes as a heteronomous phenomenon will be presented. The historical significance of the counterculture will then be demonstrated in terms of Tillich's concept of kairos. Landscape fragmentation limits the ability of species to disperse between habitats and shift their distributions in response to changing environmental conditions. Because of habitat fragmentation, many species will be unable to keep pace with climate change, and this is expected to greatly impact the diversity, functioning, and stability of future ecosystems. Conserving habitat connectivity is expected to mitigate some of these impacts. But there are also concerns that the complexity of ecological responses will compromise our ability to predict future community structure and functioning. Although previous research has examined how dependent and self-critical people recall their parents, there has been little investigation of the influence of Dependency and Self-Criticism on parental attitudes and behavior. The present research examined these relationships in mothers of adolescent children. In Studies 1, 2, and 3, mothers completed measures of Dependency and Self-Criticism and of baseline affect, then were given experimentally manipulated feedback about the child's competence and autonomy. Affect was assessed again, and mothers "coached" children on computer problem-solving puzzles. Studies 1 and 2 examined mothers of adolescent girls, and Study 3 examined mothers of adolescent boys. Des tiges cyclindriques de 9mm dediamètre et de 90mm de longueur ont été enduites avec 0.2mg ou 1.0mg de AApréalablement à leur implantation chirurgicale bilatérale dans les canaux fémorauxintramédullaires sur 10 canins expérimentaux. Concrete work during cold weather is normally avoided by the construction industry. The reasons for this can be grouped under two general headings; firstly, the poorer working conditions which prevail and secondly, the effect which a low ambient temperature has on the strength of freshly poured concrete. The lower standard of working conditions in winter are due mainly to snow, the fewer hours of daylight available and the heavy clothing worn and personal discomfort experienced by the workers. Weeds severely limit agricultural production in many Third World tropical countries where productivity is already marginal due to unfavourable environmental, biological, economic and social factors. Lack of both ecological and distributional information at the scale of the weed assemblage, and lack of detailed data on the life histories and responses of the constituent weedy species hinders development of cheap and effective weed management strategies not contingent on intensive use of herbicides. Plant geographers can contribute to the solution of tropical weed problems by investigating factors which mediate the dynamics of species: regional and local ranges. This thesis will argue that Anthony Powell's A Dance to the Music of Time is a work that can tell us much about our reading process. Powell uses a homodiegetic narrator to tell the stories of a vast array of characters over a large span of time. This narrator, Nicholas Jenkins, is, in the non-sexual sense of the word, voyeuristic. He watches and remembers the actions of others while only participating minimally. Widmerpool, the only other character to appear in all twelve volumes, is a voyeur in the sexual sense of the word. Rat liver parenchyma cells were injected with epidermal growth factor (EGF) through the hepatic portal vein, and plasma membranes were isolated. Plasma membranes were fractionated into salt extract, and Triton X-114 insoluble, detergent and aqueous phases. A combination of one-dimensional SDS-PAGE gels, two dimensional gels and mass spectrometry were used to characterize proteins lost from these phases as a function of EGF injection. This proteomic approach identified 222 proteins from the salt extract of plasma membrane, of which 56 were plasma membrane or plasma membrane associated, and 32 were novel proteins. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive and difficult to treat breast cancer subtype as it lacks specific molecular targets that can be exploited therapeutically. Additionally, cancer metastasis is the cause of 90% cancer-related deaths, making the development of targeted therapies for the management of TNBC metastasis crucial to improved patient outcome. Our lab has previously identified Glycoprotein NMB(GPNMB) as a cell surface protein over-expressed in a subset of TNBC patients, the expression of which is associated with poor prognosis and metastatic phenotypes. One of the unfortunate corollaries of poststructuralist theorizing about literary texts has been the equation of a skepticism concerning language with a skepticism concerning meaning. The menace of unrestrained relativism has tended to polarize the critical community into proponents of a 'logo-diffuse' onto-epistemology and proponents of a 'logo-centric' one, and critical practice has followed this lead. The critic who attempts to situate literature within the parameters of such a debate is likely to fail unless he or she appeals to a much more extensive discourse, one which antedates the provincial contours of the current discussion.
