Since there is the danger of fall frosts damaging a large part of the tomato crop before it is completely harvested, the fruits may be picked in the mature-green stage when frosts appear imminent, and ripened artificially. In some cases, the tomato plants are set out late in the season so that the vines and fruits are at their prime when frosts are likely to occur. The fruit is then harvested in the mature-green stage, stored for a short period and then ripened. This practice lengthens the period of availability of locally grown fresh tomatoes. We assess whether the observed seasonal predictability of the September sea ice extent arising from Fram Strait ice area export, a proxy for coastal divergence along the Eurasian coastline, is present in Global Climate Models, namely the CESM2-LE, GISS-E2.1-G, GFDL FLOR-LE, CNRM-CM6-1 and CanESM5. Results show distinct periods where winter Fram Strait ice area export anomalies are negatively correlated with the May sea ice thickness anomalies along the Eurasian coastline (the source region of the Transpolar Drift Stream), and the following September Arctic sea ice extent, as shown in observations. The 2011 Canadian Federal Election provided one of the most significant shocks to the Canadian political system, which was the rise of the New Democratic Party in the province of Québec. During this election, NDP party leader Jack Layton showed his connection to Québec throughout the campaign, with his federal political party counterparts showing little to no understanding of Québec. This study was undertaken to determine the nature of the cell wall of Amoebidium parasiticum Cienk. The walls of most fungi studied up to the present time have contained either chitin or cellulose. In one case, the wall contained both chitin and cellulose (Fuller and Barshad, 1960). Staining tests with the wall of Amoebidium parasiticum failed to reveal the presence of either chitin or cellulose (Schenk, 1858; Whisler, 1961). Therefore it was considered an interesting problem to determine exactly what materials were present in this cell wall.  Lire la suite

In the early years the abnormal post-war conditions are, to a great extent, responsible for the movements of the Canadian dollar. The three years after 1924 may, for exchange purposes, be cons1dered to be normal years. In 1929 a situation arose that was different from any previous experience in the history of Canadian exchange. This poetry however gives all signs of clumsiness (let us think of Gringoire's play or of Quasimodo's "verses"), of vulgarity (the language used by the rogues, Jehan Frollo's drinking songs), of analphabetism (a condition shared by Esmeralda, Quasimodo, and "le peuple"), of the secular, even more of the profane (the heresy and anticlericalism present in the novel). P.H.X. was found to precipitate spontaneously in the very slow D.P.T. AcAn reaction in the absence of ammonium nitrate at 35°C. H.M.X. and by - products are formed at the same rate and in similar yields from both D.P.T. and P.H.X. at 25°, 30° and 35°0., in the presence of ammonium nitrate. 'I'he same conclusion was reached when the addition of ammonium nitrate was delayed for various lengths of time in the D.P.T.-H.M.X. reaction. We studied the consequences of providing rat dams with elevated levels of dietary fat during lactation on stress responses in the offspring at different stages of development. High-fat feeding increased total milk lipid levels, and led to increased lipid deposition and plasma leptin levels in pups. Ten-day-old neonates from high-fat fed mothers had reduced stress responsiveness compared to controls. In contrast, 35-day-old pups from mothers fed high-fat diets showed greater stress-induced ACTH secretion. These findings indicate that maternal diet has effects on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) responsiveness, which can persist after weaning to a normal rat chow diet. Three experiments were conducted on sows. In experiment I, Landrace gilts were fed ad libitum, from 10 weeks of age to puberty, diets containing either 2800 (LE), 3400 (ME) and 3900 (HE) Kcal DE/kg. Age at puberty was delayed in gilts fed LE and ME. Backfat thickness was significantly reduced in LE and ME groups. Puberty onset was more determined by age and backfat thickness than by weight. Transcriptional fusion mutants and Tn5-B20 transposon mutants were isolated where the only genes affected are believed to either be involved in the hypothetical GABA shunt or code for subunits of the alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase enzyme complex of Sinorhizobium meliloti. The growth phenotypes of Rm30222 (gabT) and eight mutants in gabD1, 2, 3, and 4 on minimal media were comparable to that of the wild-type. Compared to wild-type, Rm30222 (gabT) lacked alpha-ketoglutarate-dependent gamma-aminobutyrate transaminase activity showed high induction of gabT on GABA but produced green plants indicative of being Fix+. In response to Tibetan social pressures in the 11th century, Atisa initiated a renewal of Buddhist monasticism that resulted in all Buddhist praxis outside of meditation being strictly framed by attitudes and behaviors informed by love and compassion. Atisa's teachings are exemplified in pithy sayings that point to the heart of bodhisattva practice, and this mind training practice developed into a tradition in the period immediately following his passing. The success of the method, and of the emulation of Atisa as exemplar of a perfect bodhisattva, led to the adoption of mind training throughout Tibetan Buddhism. Since 1983, the WHO has recommended the use of the INR for measuring the level of anticoagulation for patients receiving warfarin therapy. However, no scientifically-derived guidelines, using the INR, for the surgical management of this group of patients exists. In the first part of this study, the protocols followed by oral surgeons, when treating patients receiving warfarin, and who require dental extractions were established by performing a mail survey. In the fantastical world of the Architecture Civile, Jean-Jacques Lequeu (1757-1826) designed the architect's space of appearance across a ritual act of representation. The meticulous crafting of the architectural drawing defined the very site upon which his highly syncretic and imaginative ornamental language was developed. It was in the idea of ornament that Lequeu articulated his veneration of, and dedication to the restoration of, architectural beauty and delight. Across most of North America, white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations are increasingly overabundant and the widespread impacts of their herbivory are having important ecological and economic repercussions. The cascading consequences of white-tailed deer overabundance are concerning as they can threaten even our most vulnerable forest ecosystems. In protected areas, where recreational activities often take place, human presence has been shown to affect wildlife in various ways, which include disturbing the spatial distribution of individuals. Inspired by the Randall-Sundrum (RS) solution to the weak-scale hierarchy problem we present a new five-dimensional brane-world model. While many cosmological implications of RS-type scenarios have been considered, the question of inflation is still relatively unexplored. In this work we investigate the dynamics induced by fluctuations in the extra dimension and find that the so-called radion can be used for inflation. A class of models are found which simultaneously allow for radius stabilization by utilizing a bulk scalar field with a potential in the bulk and on the branes. Deeper understanding of the factors controlling stable isotopic signatures of aquatic organisms of all trophic levels is required if we are to properly use them in food web studies and as environmental indicators. The present field study conducted in the Ste. Marguerite River system, Quebec, compared periphyton signatures found in eight reaches (sections of a river/tributary) each composed of a series of sites with different flow regimes. Similar to patterns found in the laboratory, periphyton delta13C significantly decreased with increasing water velocity. In addition, periphyton biomass positively affected periphyton delta13C. The continuous heating to fracture test (CHF) developed at McGill was used to study the effect of decarburization on the incipient melting temperature. In the CHF test, a sample was deformed at a constant true strain rate, while its temperature is increased at a constant rate. This test allows the incipient melting temperature to be determined using a single test, instead of the several required by isothermal tensile testing. An isothermal decarburization step, to create a decarburized layer at the surface of the sample, was added prior to the CHF test. This study adds to a small body of literature on social skills measures and interventions for adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) without intellectual disability (ID) or related social communication difficulties (SCD). In Study 1, we developed a new multimodal assessment tool, the Role-Play Assessment of Social Skills (R-PASS), which aims at measuring real-time application of social skills in situations of interpersonal conflict. In our pilot study, R-PASS scores of adults with ASD/SCD were marginally lower than those of neurotypical adults, with a large effect size, suggesting that the measure can pick up differences between the two groups. The writings of Edmond Jabes pose a formidable task to their reader. Their irrecoverable strangeness, which makes their categorization difficult, is at once frightening and seductive. This is particularly true of those works associated with what one might describe as the author's "second manner", inaugurated by Le Livre des Questions. This thesis attempts to re-read the works of Jabes (in particular Le Livre des Ressemblances) from the standpoint of the fragment, presupposing that this form is not simply an effect secondary to a particular literary conception, but that it becomes the essence of Jabes' poetics, its very organizing principle. Treatment of chick myoblasts with the glucosidase inhibitors bromoconduritol (BCD) or N-methyl-1-deoxynojirimycin (MDJN), but not the mannosidase I inhibitor 1-deoxymannojirimycin (ManDJN), decreased the rate of cell-adhesion to fibronectin and laminin and increased the rate of adhesion to collagen. The adhesion of chick myoblasts is predominantly mediated by integrin(s), as judged by inhibition of adhesion by an anti-integrin antibody (JG22). The effects of BCD, MDJN and ManDJN on myoblast integrin detectable at the myoblast cell surface with JG22 antibody correlated well with their effects on adhesion to fibronectin and laminin, and paralleled the previously reported effects of these agents on myogenesis. …  Lire la suite

We have observed the electronic transitions within the ('4)T(,1g) ground state of Co('2+) in MgO by Raman spectroscopy. We identified the (GAMMA)(,6g) (--->) (GAMMA)(,8g)('1) transition at 305 cm('-1) and the (GAMMA)(,6g )(--->)(, )(GAMMA)(,8g)('2) transition at 930 cm('-1); the (GAMMA)(,6g )(--->)(, )(GAMMA)(,7g) transition is not seen and is lost in the two-phonon band. We also observed an impurity induced vibration mode at 280 cm('-1), in resonance with the acoustic phonon branches at the surface of the Brillouin zone.
