2004 — God's mobile mansions : Protestant church relocation and extension in Montreal, 1850-1914
    Résumé

Extensive church building programmes and the relocation of existing churches were important features of Protestant congregational life in industrializing cities across Britain and North America. In Montreal, building booms in the 1860s, 70s, and 80s led many congregations to abandon their old churches in the centre of the city and rebuild on a grander scale 'uptown', closer to the residential neighbourhoods to which their wealthier members were moving. In the early twentieth century, when a new phase of growth engulfed the city, many of the same congregations again faced the dilemma of whether or not to move. Whereas the earlier …  Lire la suite

1997 — The role of the parish in fostering Irish-Catholic identity in nineteenth-century Montreal /
    Résumé

This work focuses on the efforts of Montreal's Irish Catholics to maintain a cohesive ethnic community throughout the nineteenth century, and on the vital role that the national parish played in this process. The early community directed its attention towards institution building centred around Saint Patrick's church, which had been built for the use of Irish Catholics in the 1840s. Following the dismemberment of the extensive parish of Notre-Dame and the erection of smaller Irish national parishes in the early 1870s, greater emphasis was placed on the creation of a wide variety of parish societies. By discouraging participation in Irish …  Lire la suite

2020 — Benefits of physical exercise on cognitive, white matter, and endothelial dysfunctions in mouse models of vascular cognitive impairment and dementia
    Résumé

The two most common forms of dementia, vascular cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), display substantial similarities with regards to their cerebrovascular pathology and they share cardiovascular risk factors as predictors of future cognitive decline. These commonalities suggest that it may be possible to prevent, alleviate and potentially treat both forms of dementia by targeting the cerebrovasculature. Presented in this thesis are findings pertaining to how the pleiotropic effects of the anti-cholesterol drug simvastatin (SV) and, regular, moderate levels of aerobic physical exercise (EX) can prevent VCID. While investigating the commonalities between these two treatment approaches, we …  Lire la suite

2000 — Strategy for the optimal climate control of greenhouse tomatoes
    Résumé

In Canada, the control of relative humidity is a key issue in greenhouse production as it has a direct and significant effect on dehumidification cost, crop quality and yield. Experiments were carried out to measure plant transpiration rate and fruit yield under four different ambient water vapour pressure deficits. Four identical greenhouses were used to produce tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) under four different regimes of water vapour pressure deficit (VPD). Dehumidification costs were highly correlated to VPD: low VPD produced low transpiration requiring little dehumidification. Thus, managing plant transpiration can lead to a more efficient use of transpiration for crop …  Lire la suite

2000 — Etude des interactions ARN-protéines de la télomérase chez Tetrahymena et chez l'humain
    Résumé

Telomerase is the major mechanism that compensates for telomere loss during conventional DNA replication in eukaryotic cells. This enzyme is a ribonucleoprotein reverse transcriptase, composed of an RNA subunit (TR) containing a template that dictates the telomeric DNA sequence, a catalytic subunit (TERT), and others associated proteins. In order to characterize the telomerase RNA-proteins interactions in two different organisms, Tetrahymena thermophila and human, we developed two electrophoretic RNA mobility shift assays. In Tetrahymena, we identified a specific RNA-protein complex by using whole cell extracts partially purified and in vitro transcribed and radiolabeled Tetrahymena telomerase RNA (159 nt). Certain Tetrahymena telomerase …  Lire la suite

2000 — Gender-based persecution and the 'particular social group' category : an analysis
    Résumé

This thesis addresses the problems related to the assessment of gender-based claims of persecution under the international definition of 'refugee'. The 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees does not list 'gender' as one of the persecution grounds that entitle a person to seek refuge. In attempting to solve this apparent dilemma, the 'membership of a particular social group' category was long considered to be the appropriate assessment framework. While nowadays the other four enumerated Convention grounds---race, religion, nationality, and political opinion---have increasingly received regard, the approach to gender-based persecution has so far been neither systematic, nor …  Lire la suite

2012 — Teaching and learning sexual health at the end of modernity: exploring postmodern pedagogical tensions and possibilities with students, teachers and community-based educators

2004 — Toward an education of joy, desire and possibilities : sexualities education as liberatory pedagogy
    Résumé

As sexualities educators, we rarely examine the broader social context our sexualities are shaped within, nor do we often give meaningful instruction to students on how to come to terms with emotions and desire or choosing and being good partners. Some of the ways we 'do' masculinity, femininity and gender in this culture can compromise our ability to fully engage in loving relationships with our selves and others. Teaching sexualities as transformational learning, critical theory challenges us to do better, both as individuals and as a society aware of and resisting oppression. Instead of teaching as though the body and …  Lire la suite

1998 — Multiculturalism and the resignification of the Enlightenment tradition : implications for education
    Résumé

This paper examines the tensions resulting from multiculturalism's quest to achieve equality through the recognition of cultural difference. The author argues that multiculturalism is inherently limited in its potential to recognize deep difference because it operates through the framework of the conceptual heritage of the Enlightenment's political project. Multiculturalism's dependence on Enlightenment evaluative norms means that difference and diversity can be recognized to the extent that they further the objective of achieving liberty and equality for all. The author examines the theoretical legacy of the Enlightenment as it informs the multicultural project and also analyses the impact of poststructuralist theory …  Lire la suite

2017 — Land system resilience: linking land use change, state policy and ethnic minority resource management in northern upland Vietnam
    Résumé

In the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, state policies governing land use, market integration, and poverty reduction largely determine the prospects for social-ecological resilience. In turn, land system change in the northern uplands has largely been shaped by market liberalization and the integration of ethnic minority farmers into state development practices and ideologies. Hybrid crops and plantation forestry are increasingly being adopted with important implications for local livelihoods and ecosystems, although the long-term outcomes of such land changes remain poorly understood. The aim of this thesis is to explore the relationships between state policy, land use change, and social-ecological resilience from …  Lire la suite

    2005 — The biodegradation of a synthetic co-polyester by hydrolase-producing microorganisms /
    Résumé

The biological degradation of the synthetic aliphatic/aromatic co-polyester Ecoflex(TM) (BASF) by 30 strains of hydrolase-producing soil bacteria, fungi and yeasts was investigated at moderate environmental conditions. Previous studies had shown that these materials could be degraded. These studies were done uniquely in compost or by axenic compost isolates, and under thermophilic conditions, but it is likely that most of this material will be found in sites at more moderate conditions. Thus, a screening procedure was developed to assess the biodegradability of the co-polyester at ambient environmental conditions. The screening also allowed for the investigation of the mechanism of biodegradation in …  Lire la suite

It has been argued that the principles of stimulus generalization (SG) derived from conditioning experiments also apply to human voluntary responses (e.g., Gibson, 1939; Brown, et al., 1951; Andreas, 1954; Mednick & Freedman, 1960). In order to prove this contention empirically, several experiments have been performed on a variety of voluntary responses, such as, verbal, perceptual, conceptual and judgmental. However, a critical survey of these studies, such as that reported in the following pages, reveals that they have failed to demonstrate convincingly any more than superficial similarities between their results and the results reported in conditioning experiments. Furthermore, their authors …  Lire la suite

In nonparametric testing based on ranks, the occurrence of ties is a fairly common phenomenon. Many methods have been suggested for assigning ranks to tied observations in such problems. In this thesis we review and discuss these methods with regards to their relative merits under different situations. The recent extension of the asymptotic theory of rank statistics from continuous to discontinuous distributions has made it possible to calculate the Asymptotic Relative Efficiency (ARE) of different methods of handling ties. A comparison, based on ARE, among the three main methods of handling ties, namely, the average scores, midranks and randomized ranks …  Lire la suite

2004 — Netrin-1 signaling through DCC enhances synapse number and function
    Résumé

Actin-based changes in filopodia dynamics and spine morphology play an important role in initiating synapse formation and mediating synaptic plasticity. During embryonic development, the guidance cue netrin-1 signals through Deleted in Colorectal Cancer (DCC) receptors to modulate actin cytoskeleton dynamics, enhancing the formation and motility of filopodia. We recently reported that netrin-1 and DCC continue to be expressed in the adult spinal cord, but their function remains elusive. Here, we report that netrin-1 and DCC are expressed in adult cortical and hippocampal neurons, where they distribute to synaptic sites. In primary cortical neuron cultures, while netrin-1 is restricted to dendrites, …  Lire la suite

2007 — Studying the role of naturally-occurring regulatory T cells in a model of type 1 diabetes
    Résumé

Treg cells counter-balance autoreactive immune cells in healthy individuals. In the absence of Treg cells, multi-organ immune diseases manifest. Thus, Treg cell defects are suspected to contribute to T1D. Currently, it remains unclear whether Treg cell defects are responsible for the manifestation of T1D. Thus, we hypothesized that Treg cell defects results in T1D. We observed that T reg cells are present in normal frequencies in the thymus and peripheral immune system of diabetes-prone mice. Furthermore, thymic and peripheral T reg cells are operative and mediate regulation by suppressing effector T (Teff) cells in the pancreatic lymph nodes and pancreas. …  Lire la suite
