2022 — Investigation of centrosome-dependent signaling axis driving stemness and chromosomal instability of ALDH-positive cancer stem-like cellsRésumé

1972 — The identity and function of thymus-derived lymphocytes in the anti-sheep red blood cell immune responses on miceRésumé
Cell-mediated immunity was induced by the injection of a low dose of sheep erythrocytes in Complete Freund's Adjuvant. This state of cell-mediated immunity was found to correlate with a reduce capacity of the spleen cells taken from such animals three days after priming to produce anti-sheep erythrocyte antibody in vitro. Evidence presented suggested that the depression is due to a competition between the cell mediated and humoral responses for the same thymus-derived lymphocyte. Thymus-derived lymphocytes perform a helper function in the synthesis of anti-sheep erythrocyte antibodies in mice. The helper cell could be replaced by a cell-free supernatant derived from … Lire la suite

2002 — The role of RET tyrosine kinase in kidney and urinary tract development /Résumé
RET is a tyrosine kinase receptor that induces cell survival, proliferation and migration. When bound by its ligand, GDNF (glial derived neurotrophic factor) and its co-receptor, GFRalpha-1 (GDNF family receptor alpha-1), tyrosine residues in the intracellular domain of the receptor are phosphorylated as part of signal transduction. In the kidney, RET is required for branching of the ureteric bud and it also regulates the maturation of the ureter in the urinary tract. Although it is well established in mice that the absence or overexpression of RET leads to severe kidney abnormalities, the cellular basis for these defects remains unexplored. To … Lire la suite

2010 — Sequential decision making in non-stationary environmentsRésumé

2019 — Multi-sensor target tracking: Communication- and computation-efficient algorithmsRésumé

2014 — Performance comparison of randomized gossip, broadcast gossip and collection tree protocol for distributed averaging in wireless sensor networksRésumé
Wireless sensor networks consisting of low cost and battery-powered sensors are used for a multitude of applications from environmental monitoring to target tracking. The large number of sensors deployed in often inaccessible or hostile environments generates the need for fault-tolerant, asynchronous distributed systems and protocols. The problem of distributed averaging, in which nodes communicate with only their neighbors to calculate the network-wide average of their data value, is a basic building block for many more complex applications such as distributed optimization and compression. Gossip algorithms and tree-based aggregation are two popular paradigms for solving distributed averaging. In this thesis, we … Lire la suite

1998 — Multiple morphologies of polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymers in dilute solutionRésumé
Multiple morphologies of self-assembled aggregates of polystyrene- b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) diblock copolymers in dilute solution have been studied. The PS blocks are relatively long compared to the PEO blocks. The aggregates are prepared by the addition of water or methanol to the copolymer solutions in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), dioxane, or tetrahydrofuran (THF) to induce the aggregation of the PS blocks. Aqueous solutions of the aggregates are obtained by dialysis with water. Morphologies are directly studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The morphogenic effect of the copolymer composition indicates that as the EO content in the diblock decreases, the morphology of the …

2003 — Noodle dough rheology and quality of instant fried noodlesRésumé
Instant noodles are becoming popular in North America due to some recognized factors such as ready-to-eat convenience, acceptable taste and preferred texture. These factors are created by the interactions of certain ingredients including water, starch, gum and others. This research aims to investigate the ingredients effect on dough rheology and its relationship with qualities of instant noodles. Fundamental and dynamic tests were used to evaluate dough rheology. Relevant parameters include Young's modulus (E), energy at break (EB), storage modulus (G') and phase angle (delta). Increasing moisture content of noodle dough decreased its Young's modulus, energy at break and storage modulus. … Lire la suite

2012 — Extrusion processing of protein rich food formulationsRésumé
Extrusion has been widely used as a high-temperature short-time process to produce commercially shelf stable extruded products. Many physical and chemical changes take place during the process, including the gelatinization of starch, denaturation of protein and even complete cooking. To fully understand changes during the process, evaluation of the effect of extrusion process variables on the extruded product is very important. There are many process and product-dependent variables associated with the extrusion process such as barrel temperature, screw speed, die diameter and raw material composition (moisture, starch, protein and fat contents). In general, commercial extruded products have mainly focused on … Lire la suite

2007 — Washing to detoxify soil burdened with PCB compoundsRésumé
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of 209 chemical congeners that are toxic and persistent organic contaminants---they have been present in the environmental for several decades. Sites contaminated with PCBs pose serious health and safety risks to the surrounding environment due to their toxicity, persistence and bioaccumulation in creature. Polychlorinated biphenyls were commercially produced complex mixtures for a variety of applications. Before production was discontinued world-wide in 1977, several million tons of PCBs have been directly disposed to the soil. Researchers have been encouraged to develop novel techniques/approaches to detoxify PCB compounds and PCB contaminated soil. Ideally, these methods would … Lire la suite

2006 — Space, vision and identity : imagining and inventing Shanghai in the courtesan illustrations of Dianshizhai Pictorial (1884-1898)Résumé
This thesis investigates various representational modes and strategies in the Shanghai courtesan illustrations in Dianshizhai Pictorial. The aim of the study is to examine how Shanghai's early modern identity was imaged, imagined and contested through the courtesan figure. I argue that by establishing a new urban iconography, Dianshizhai Pictorial transformed the Shanghai courtesan from a traditional archetypical meiren to a universal image of the urban beauty. On the one hand, the modern city, previously an alien concept, was made familiar and acceptable through the image of the Shanghai courtesan. On the other hand, the ambivalence of the courtesan's new image … Lire la suite

2008 — Fixed parameter tractable algorithms for optimal covering tours with turnsRésumé
Many geometry problems can be solved by transformation to graph problems. Often, both the geometry version and graph version of the problem are NP-hard - and therefore not likely to be solved in polynomial time. One approach to solving these hard problems is to use fixed parameter tractable (FPT) algorithms. We present a framework for developing FPT algorithms for graph problems using dynamic programming, monadic second order logic of graphs, tree-width, and bidimensionality. We use this framework to obtain FPT results for covering tour problems on grid-graphs with turn costs. The results for these problems are not practical, but they … Lire la suite

2026 — Large Language Models Adaptation for Low-resource Languages: The Case for African LanguagesRésumé
Despite remarkable advances in Large Language Models (LLMs), African languagesremain critically underserved by the current training and adaptation pipeline. This thesisaddresses the fundamental bottlenecks in adapting LLMs for low-resource languagesthrough a unified two-stage investigation: benchmarking via Supervised Fine-Tuning(SFT) and foundational adaptation via Continued Pre-Training (CPT).Our first contribution is INJONGO, a natively-generated multicultural benchmark forintent classification and slot-filling spanning 16 African languages. Crucially, INJONGO isnon-contaminated—not included in the training data of the LLMs we evaluate—ensuringfair assessment. Our experiments yield two key findings: (1) SFT effectively adaptsdecoder-only LLMs to downstream tasks, demonstrating the viability of task-specificalignment; and (2) encoder models pre-trained on … Lire la suite

2005 — The mechanical behaviour of chemically-treated PVC geosynthetic membranes /Résumé
Geosynthetics that are usually made of Poly(vinyl) Chloride (PVC) are used as components of engineered barriers in landfill applications. As a component of an engineered barrier scheme, it is used to mitigate the migration of hazardous and toxic mixtures of chemicals that can diffuse through the clay layer in the engineered barrier. The integrity of the geosynthetic layers that are in frequent contact with these chemicals is therefore of interest to the overall waste containment strategy. This thesis conducts a coordinated investigation that will allow the characterization of the deformability properties of geosynthetic materials, subjected to various levels of exposure … Lire la suite

2023 — Identifying cell surface molecules for neural circuit wiringRésumé
The proper functioning of a nervous system depends on the correct assembly of the synaptic connections between neurons into neural circuits. The molecules that are responsible for establishing the synaptic specificities during neural circuit assembly are not well understood. To identify some of the key factors involved in establishing synaptic specificity, I took advantage of two hard-wired primary sensory neural circuits (mechanosensory and chemosensory) in the model organism Drosophila melanogaster. I performed multiple rounds of single-cell RNA sequencing on the two neurons to compare their transcriptomes. My results indicate that 74 cell surface molecules were differentially expressed between the two … Lire la suite

2011 — Optics and chemical vapour deposition of graphene monolayers on various substratesRésumé

2007 — Factor inhibiting ATF4-mediated transcription is a novel leucine zipper transcriptional repressor that regulates bone massRésumé
Skeletal development is a complex event that requires a delicate balance between bone formation and bone resorption. Multiple transcription factors expressed in the bone-forming cells, osteoblasts, play crucial roles during the process of bone formation. Among them, ATF4 (Activating Transcription Factor 4) is a basic domain-leucine zipper transcriptional activator that is responsible for osteoblast differentiation, osteoblast-specific genes expression, synthesis of type I collagen, and osteoclast differentiation. Mice deficient for ATF4 are runted and exhibit severe skeletal dysplasia. Our laboratory has discovered Factor Inhibiting ATF4-mediated Transcription (FIAT), whose name was coined for its interaction with ATF4 and subsequent repression of ATF4-mediated … Lire la suite

The three dominant convergence centres of the baroclinic component are found on the east coast of Asia, near the eastern Pacific and on the east coast of North America. In most areas the barotropic component of the eddy forcing accelerates the mean flow. Near the dateline the barotropic and baroclinic components of the eddy forcing tend to enhance each … Lire la suite
