2021 — Cretaceous Amber: A New Source of Bird Remains and of Palaeoecological Information in Dinosaur BonebedsRésumé
In order to reconstruct Cretaceous ecology and environments, this thesis investigates amber deposits in Myanmar and Western Canada, through chemical analyses of amber and study of the inclusions. As part of this work, I described a bird foot and a large series of feather inclusions from the amber of Myanmar. In the bird specimen, a series of osteological features and the morphology of the claws, support a systematic placement among Enantiornithes. I was able to describe delicate integumentary structures associated with the foot. This included scutellate scale feathers, a type of feather that has only been documented in Burmese amber … Lire la suite

2018 — Mass Transfer and Emission Studies on a Catalyset-Aided CO2 Absorption and Desorption in a Post Combustion CO2 CaptureRésumé
The mass transfer study of a catalyst aided absorption and desorption with the intent of minimizing the energy requirement for the solvent regeneration as well as improving the absorption efficiency of the solvent was carried out. This included the selection and screening for suitable amine solvents for the absorption and desorption process using a bench scale pilot plant. The solvent screening process was evaluated in terms of absorption efficiency, cyclic capacity of amine, height requirement of the column and the overall mass transfer coefficient of both the absorber and desorber. Solvents used were 5M monoethanolamine (MEA), 5M MEA-2M methyl diethanolamine … Lire la suite

2012 — A Model for Improving the Strategic Measurement and management of Policing: The Police Organisational Performance Index (POPI)Résumé
In order to implement and sustain contemporary-policing, police organisations must operate strategically by focusing on the measurement and management of results (outcomes) and the efficiency of services and programs instead of focusing only on inputs, processes and outputs. Notwithstanding this, it is clear that many leaders of policing have not recognized the necessity to identify and align appropriate organisational performance indicators with an organisational strategy. The present study therefore sought to establish a model for the strategic measurement and management of police organisational performance that would a) embrace the Fundamental Principles of Contemporary-Policing such as consultation, collaboration and an outcome … Lire la suite

2011 — Tentativeness and Permeability in the Poitical Thought of Hannah ArendtRésumé
Hannah Arendt’s distinction between public and private rests upon a distinction between freedom and necessity that many have argued is ontological and thus immutable. This essay disputes that interpretation by discussing the tentative foundations of Arendt’s work on history and the human condition, in order to argue that this distinction stems not from a phenomenological essentialism but rather a meditation on historical forms of living-together that explicitly rejects notions of human nature and causality in history. This tentativeness stems from what Arendt regarded as the disastrous tendency of philosophy to systematize the chaos and disorder of human affairs, so that … Lire la suite

2021 — An Investigation into Seeding the Solar System Via Terrestrial MeteoritesRésumé
An investigation into whether terrestrial meteorites could seed the solar system is the main purpose of this thesis. An estimate for the minimum amount of terrestrial material that finds its way into interplanetary space over the past 550 million years is made. From the characteristics of known terrestrial impact craters, it is found that at least 1013 kg of material, potentially containing microorganisms, has been ejected from the Earth’s surface into the inner solar system. This estimate is derived upon a reverseengineering approach which links the observed crater diameter to impactor size and then through a set of analytic equations … Lire la suite

2013 — Identifying Coaching Abuses in Youth Sport: A Human Rights Approach for Policy DevelopmentRésumé
Research indicates that the culture of sport tends to promote an idealized, or mythologized perception of the benefits of participation for youth (Brackenridge, 2006; Forster, 2006; Houlihan et al., 2011). The belief that sport is a moral oasis (Brackenridge, 2006) has had a serious negative impact on our understanding of the harm caused by abuse in youth sports. In particular, there is a lack of data, monitoring, evaluation, and universal definitions of abusive coaching behaviours, despite the general acknowledgement that coaches wield considerable power and influence that extends beyond the playing field. Without such information it is extremely difficult to … Lire la suite

2022 — The relationship between predicted and observed accuracy when learning a new faceRésumé
Growing evidence suggests that when learning a new face, unsystematic variability (differences in expression, make-up, hairstyle) leads to more successful recognition than both systematic variability (differences in viewpoint or lighting) and no variability (learning from a single photo). In the present study, we investigated whether subjects can intuit this benefit. Subjects learned three unfamiliar target identities with unsystematic, systematic, or no variability, then sorted new photos of the targets from photos of similar-looking distractors. Subjects predicted how accurate they would be at recognizing the target at pre-training, post-training, and post-test. Surprisingly, face recognition accuracy did not differ across variability conditions. … Lire la suite

2018 — The European Union at the Crossroads: A Look at the European Union’s Challenges through Romania’s LensesRésumé
“A crisis does not fall from the sky; political crises are not unforeseeable natural catastrophes, which one stands helpless in the face of. They build gradually, accumulating explosive power piece by piece, and then after years of negligence, they are detonated. The heads of state and government behaved nonchalantly as the crisis mounted; they made no attempt to comprehend the dark that gathered over the European pathways.” (Junker, 2005, para. 6-7) For the first time in sixty years the European Union (EU) is at the crossroads. There are both internal and external forces that are tearing the European Union apart. … Lire la suite

2012 — An Analysis of the Discourse Function of Saulteaux/mi-/ As Exemplified In A Traditional Cote First Nation Teaching TextRésumé
This thesis has a three-fold purpose. First it presents a Saulteaux narrative collected from a Saskatchewan reserve, Cote First Nation, transcribed, translated and analyzed linguistically. Saulteaux, the Plains dialect of Ojibwe, is spoken in the southern half of Saskatchewan and in Manitoba. The dialect studied in this thesis is the dialect that is spoken in the Kamsack area. Second, the thesis focuses on the use and function of the discourse particle /mi-/ in Saulteaux text structure. Following an introduction to the main thesis topic, a cross-dialectal survey of this discourse particle in Ojibwe, both its morphosyntactic form and word order, … Lire la suite

2024 — Being believed: Life history and the healing journey of Indian Residential School survivorsRésumé
This study explored the lives of two Elders who are Indian Residential School Survivors and asked whether they felt that being believed was a component of their healing processes of overcoming violence at Indian Residential School. I used the notion of “being believed” as an experience linked to epistemic injustice (an injustice related to knowledge and power differences). A considerable part of the Survivors’ healing processes centred on their experience with an out-of-court reparations process known as the Independent Assessment Process (IAP), a compensatory component of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement (IRSSA). The study used life history research. A … Lire la suite

2016 — SedleyRésumé
“Sedley” is a collection of original regionalist poetry set in a contemporary Saskatchewan town of the same name. It focuses on the people who reside in the community, the landscape that surrounds it, and the speaker’s interactions with both. The speaker grew up in the town, and has an ambivalent relationship with it: she loves aspects of the place—the Prairies, for instance— but she also wants to leave and seek out new experiences. The community itself is changing. It is evolving from a rural farming community to a commuter town. These are poems that mourn Sedley, and celebrate it. Lire la suite

2019 — Rank Distribution of Linear Maps and Proportion of Indecomposable RepresentationsRésumé
The distribution of the ranks of all linear maps between two nite-dimensional vector spaces over a eld of order q is determined both theoretically and experimen- tally. The distribution is derived by using a particular group action on the set of rectangular matrices with entries from a eld of order q and then applying the orbit- stabilizer theorem. In addition, the proportion of vectors in the kernel of a linear map based on its image dimension is determined and used to experimentally determine the rank of a linear map. Moreover, the proportion of the indecomposable representations in the functor category … Lire la suite

2015 — The Hahn-Banach Separation Theorem in Free ConvexityRésumé
This thesis presents and develops theorems on separation in the context of free convexity and matrix convex sets. After presenting a proof of the Hahn-Banach Separation Theorem, the main work in this thesis is a treatment of the Effros-Winkler Hahn-Banach Separation Theorem in the setting of matrix convex sets. This result is subsequently interpreted as a theorem concerning noncommutative sets in free analysis. Lastly, a new and complete characterization (in terms of liner pencils) of the matrix convex hull of a g-tuple of complex matrices is established. Lire la suite

2020 — An Analysis of User-Oriented Attribute Importance Based on Three-Way DecisionRésumé
Attributes play a significant role in data mining and machine learning. In real-world problems, it is reasonable to consider different attributes with different importance. Most of the existing attribute importance research focuses on statistics or information theory perspectives, that is, an attribute with a higher prediction ability is considered to be more critical. User preference, which involves a user to specify his or her preferential attitude towards a set of attributes, is also a meaningful perspective in attribute importance analysis. However, this field has not received its due attention. Three-way decision theory provides a unified framework for thinking, problem solving, … Lire la suite

2016 — Carbon Dioxide Absorption into Aqueous Ammonia in a Hollow Fiber Membrane ContactorRésumé
Chemical absorption has been considered as a promising technology for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture from different industrial waste gases. However, this technology has not been widely commercialized due to its high capital and operational costs, especially the cost for solvent regeneration. Studies have been focused on developing more efficient gas/liquid contactors or superior solvents that require less energy for regeneration. Aqueous ammonia (NH3) has been recently studied as a CO2 absorption solvent in many traditional gas/liquid contactors due to its lower cost and low energy requirement for solvent regeneration compared to traditional amine solutions. Since membrane contactors offer more advantages … Lire la suite
