2020 — The Social Impacts of Flood on the Canadian PrairiesRésumé
Climate extremes are costly environmental hazards, which create social stressors due to impacts on all human uses of land and water resources. Humans are adaptable, but their capacity for adaptation is constrained by various social factors, including social inequality. This research project asked: “How do gender and other social factors shape the experience of flooding for individuals in a rural agricultural community?” A case study approach was used to develop an in-depth understanding of one rural area’s unique experience of climate hazards. The research focused on the rural community of Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, and its surrounding area. A total of … Lire la suite

2021 — On The Automation of Agency in Algorithmic Music CompositionRésumé
This thesis, and the artworks that accompany it, are the products of my Special Case, Interdisciplinary PhD program. The program allowed me to develop artworks where programmable computers are granted agency over music structure, contrasting with my prior composing practice centred on digital audio workstations and linear scores. Here I seek bridges between my established practice of linear composition and those where algorithm-design facilitates interactivity, nonlinearity, and contact be- tween human agents through innovative computer-based interfaces. I establish three types of contribution: one third my contribution to computer science, one third the artworks which I developed, and one third my … Lire la suite

2020 — Co-Composing Narratives of Strengths: A Narrative Inquiry into Lived Experiences Authentically Grounded in the Strengths PerspectiveRésumé
We live in a society that is so ingrained in a certain way of thinking that we rarely question our thought processes and how they permeate all that we do (Anderson & Heyne, 2012). One of those perspectives is the problem-orientated approach to services for people with disabilities. Historically, service professionals have concentrated on participants’ deficits; however, focusing on participants’ strengths is a paradigm shift. According to Anderson and Heyne, this practice is now beginning to occur in various professions. Astonished! is a user-led organization that is authentically grounded in the strengths perspective to support young adults living with complex … Lire la suite

2012 — "When I Get There I Tend To Live There": Home and Community in Radio Cyberspace on CBC Radio 3Résumé
TheRadioHead, long-time member, user, blog participant and listener of CBC Radio 3 (R3) describes the music service as “a place where I will find the nurturing that I need” (TheRadioHead June 2010). This “place” can be found on the website http://radio3.cbc.ca and is further located through daily live webcasts (that are also broadcast on satellite radio), weekly podcasts, music streams and on-demand tracks from thousands of Canadian artists. Through the blogs that accompany the live webcasts, R3 users interact with one another and create what they experience as “community” and “family.” This thesis uses R3 as a case study for … Lire la suite
