2012 — The Different Stories of Cree Woman, Daleen Kay Bosse (Muskego) and Dakota-Sioux Woman, Amber Tara-Lynn Redman: Understanding Their Disappearances and Murders through Media Re-Presentations and Family Members' NarrativesRésumé
Mainstream media re-presentations continue to position Aboriginal women as naturally hypersexual and immoral. This discursive strategy justifies, enables, and incites violence against Aboriginal women (Keating, 2006; LaRocque, 1990). In order to explore 1) how media outlets and agents can be responsive to family and friends of disappeared and murdered Aboriginal women and 2) how media re-presentations can effectively disrupt rather than re-produce white masculine and colonial hegemony, I conducted this thesis project with my co-researchers, Pauline Muskego and Gwenda Yuzicappi. Pauline is the mother of Daleen Kay Bosse (Muskego), a Cree woman from Onion Lake First Nation who disappeared in … Lire la suite

2021 — SeventeenRésumé
Indigenous arts-based research has led me to emotionally challenging places, but also to regeneration, self-discovery, reclamation, community, kinship, and a greater understanding of Indigenous cultural knowledge. My research is centred on personal experience, whether it is reflecting on childhood trauma or engaging in Indigenous ways of knowing and doing through traditional art practices. My primary research focusses on the pursuit of Indigenous knowledge and applying that knowledge to my art practice. The thesis exhibition, Seventeen, collects and preserves the memories and knowledge my father instilled in me as a child. My father was a survivor of the Lebret (Qu’Appelle) Indian … Lire la suite

2023 — Psychometric evaluation of observational tools in the assessment of pain in older adults with severe dementiaRésumé
Specialized observational tools that assess pain in specific patient populations (e.g., older adults living with dementia, people with developmental disabilities) or that assess specific types of pain in populations with limited ability to communicate (e.g., orofacial pain) are available and routinely used in clinical practice and research settings. This investigation involved the comparison of various observational pain assessment tools in the assessment of pain in people with dementia. Despite available psychometric evaluations, it has not been demonstrated that observational pain assessment tools, specifically developed for patients with moderate to severe dementia, are better equipped to assess various types of pain … Lire la suite

2020 — An Exploratory Study of the Collaborative Divorce Process from the Perspective of Collaborative ProfessionalsRésumé
Divorce is becoming a societal norm, with approximately 40% of marriage in Canada ending in divorce (Douglas, 2008). The conflict arising from divorce is pervasive and affects the entire family, with long-term detrimental impacts on children. There is a need for interventions in the divorce process that would reduce conflict and increase family members’ wellbeing. This study explores collaborative divorce (CD), a non-adversarial option for families. There is a dearth of literature regarding CD. Thus, this qualitative study used a transcendental phenomenological approach to provide an in depth understanding of CD as it is experienced by collaborative professionals, including lawyers, … Lire la suite

2013 — Osteoporosis Care GapRésumé
Osteoporosis and its related fractures pose a major public health concern and a considerable economic burden on health care systems. There are recognized gaps, not only in care between best practice and actual care delivery as it relates to osteoporosis screening access, but also from knowledge to practice as men and women at risk of osteoporosis and fragility fractures are not engaging in adequate preventive health behaviours. A series of three studies were conducted and emphasized primary and secondary prevention of osteoporosis in effort to reduce the care gap. The purpose of Study 1 was to conduct a systematic review … Lire la suite

2016 — Comorbidity of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder: Implications for Diagnosis and TreatmentRésumé
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) demonstrate a high degree of comorbidity. Indeed, rates of past-year SAD among individuals with PTSD have been shown to range from 14.8 to 46.0% within treatment-seeking and veteran samples (Collimore, Carleton, Hofmann, & Asmundson, 2010). Although PTSD and SAD are individually associated with negative mental health outcomes, preliminary data suggests that the co-occurrence of these disorders can result in a significant increase in distress and impairment beyond the impact of either disorder alone (Zayfert, DeViva, Hofmann, 2005). Despite accumulating evidence that PTSD and SAD frequently co-occur, and growing interest into the … Lire la suite

2019 — Parent/Guardian Voices: Experiences and Perspectives of Parents of Children With ExceptionalitiesRésumé
In this constructivist grounded theory thesis, I explore the experiences and perspectives of parents and guardians of children with exceptionalities in Saskatchewan. As a classroom teacher and student services teacher for over twenty years, my goal was to better understand the experiences, concerns and opinions of participants. Additionally, I wanted to learn whether or not participants valued inclusion, and find out what their opinions were regarding effective strategies for teaching their children. I interviewed seventeen participants with a total of twenty-one children with exceptionalities among them. I found that most participants did indeed value inclusion. Additional categories that frequently arose … Lire la suite

2023 — koskon âtâyohkan: Healing the integration of intergenerational trauma and addictionsRésumé
This qualitative research delved into the recovery experiences from substance use disorder among nine Indigenous participants with co-occurring intergenerational trauma (IGT). Prompted by the health disparities Indigenous people face, particularly from the lingering trauma of the Indian Residential School (IRS) system, the study aimed to understand the intersection of IGT with addiction recovery. The absence of culturally congruent treatment initiatives in current approaches necessitates this exploration. Utilizing the Nêhiýaw Methodological Framework grounded in phenomenology, participants’ narratives were summarized, unveiling their lived experiences of trauma and its intergenerational impacts. The discovery of the recovery processes, termed “miskamowin,” is illustrated through three … Lire la suite

2014 — Saskatchewan Town Hall Opera Houses and Community Performance (ca. 1883-1913)Résumé
The construction of public spaces is just one mechanism by which a community builds and continually negotiates the idea, or mythos, of its identity. Communities, through their dominant groups (including economic, social, political, and religious), seek to adopt a dominant narrative regarding common community ideals and aspirations. Communities in Canada’s “new” West of the late 19th and early 20th centuries provide good examples of such community building where the construction of public spaces went hand in hand with the negotiation of collective ideology and identity. In particular, Town Hall Opera Houses (constructed early in the development of numerous Saskatchewan towns) … Lire la suite

2024 — Geochemical analyses of amber associated with dinosaur bonebeds in central North AmericaRésumé
For a long time, amber has been praised for its ability to preserve organic inclusions in spectacular detail. More recently amber has been analysed from a geochemical point of view, to gain a better understanding of the environments in which this fossilized tree resin was produced. Due to lack of fossils and detail in known paleo-environments three meters below the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary, amber geochemistry helps to fill in a gap of the fossil record. This study consists of the analysis of carbon and hydrogen stable isotopes from amber in bone beds, as well as Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) … Lire la suite

2025 — Towards root cause analysis in hybrid dynamic domainsRésumé
Reasoning about actual causes of observed effects is fundamental to the study of rationality. As such, this important problem has been studied since the time of Aristotle, with formal mathematical accounts emerging recently. We live in a world where change due to actions can be both discrete and continuous, i.e., hybrid. Yet, while there has been extensive research on actual primary and indirect causes in discrete dynamic domains, only few recent studies address causation in such hybrid domains. Building on recent progress, in this thesis I propose a first definition of primary cause in a hybrid temporal action-theoretic framework. My … Lire la suite

2023 — Two-parameter super-product systems of compact Hausdorff spacesRésumé
The theory of C∗−algebras [1, 7,17] is incredibly rich and provides a great starting point for exploring various types of operator algebras within the realm of Functional Analysis. Previous papers [8, 12] have used these algebras to analyze what are called C∗-product systems and C∗-subproduct systems, as a natural generalization of two parameter product systems of Hilbert spaces, introduced by B. Tsirelson in [18]. The Gelfand duality shows that commutative unital C∗-product and subproduct systems are directly related to certain two-parameter families of compact Hausdorff spaces, referred to in this paper as compact super-product systems. Building on this, we define … Lire la suite

2020 — Mobilization and Flow of Multiple Oil Slugs in Water Saturated Capillary ModelsRésumé
This research aims to investigate the mobilization and flow of Multi-Oil Slugs (MOS) inside capillary models saturated with water, attempting to understand the mechanism on how single oil slug (SOS) and MOS inside the capillary models are mobilized and stabilized inflow under static external pressure. The mobilization and stabilization pressures required for MOS in the models are quantified under various experimental conditions with different numbers of oil slugs. The oil slugs are all found experiencing the following patterns of state in the mobilization and flow stabilization: rest slowly increased pressure dramatically increased pressure motion impending unstable … Lire la suite

2022 — Life history traits of Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) in Saskatchewan, Canada: Age, growth, and reproduction on an advancing invasion frontRésumé
The Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) is one of the most invasive fish species in Europe, and it was recently discovered in North America in Western Canada. Our knowledge of basic life history parameters, such as growth rate and mode of reproduction for Prussian carp in their new invasive range, is currently limited. In addition, Prussian carp were only recently discovered in Saskatchewan, but how long have they been in the province, and the stage of invasion is uncertain. Prussian carp can use two modes of reproduction: (1) gonochoristic, involving males and females; and (2) gynogenesis, whereby populations consist of only … Lire la suite

2019 — Dispersion Phenomena of Solutes and Particles and Their Applications in Porous MediaRésumé
Due to the special features, nanoparticles have seen various applications from drilling and completion as well as reservoir characterization to enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Not only does dispersion dominate solute and particle transport in both aquifers and hydrocarbon reservoirs, but also it imposes a significant impact on oil recovery during either chemical flooding or miscible gas injection processes for the injected agents. Considering the inherent heterogeneity and complex flow behaviour in porous media, therefore, it is of fundamental and practical importance to accurately describe dispersion of solutes and particles (including nanoparticles) in a uniform parallel-plate fracture and a circular tube. … Lire la suite

2022 — Assessment of waste management system efficiencies and waste business characteristics of Canadian provincesRésumé
Canadians have one of the highest per capita waste disposal and generation rates globally. Canadians went from disposing 768 kg/persons of waste in 2002 to 689 kg/person of waste with in 2018. In the first part of the study, three waste management system (WMS) efficiency indicators are adopted to systematically assess WMSs efficiency in Canada from 1998 to 2016. The key study objectives are to examine the temporal changes in waste diversion activities and rank the performance of the jurisdictions using a qualitative analytical framework. Increasing Waste-Management-Output-Index trends are identified in all jurisdictions, and more government subsidiaries and incentive packages … Lire la suite

2022 — Development of a diagnostic approach for early detection and control of amine degradation in an amine-based CO2 capture processRésumé
Chemical absorption of CO2 with aqueous amine-based solvents is considered as one of the current benchmark post-combustion capture technologies mainly because of its high process efficiency. When amines are used to capture CO2 from flue gases, changes in the physical and chemical properties of the solvent may take place over time. The changes in these properties of the amines are manifestations of physical changes such as the differential evaporation of components of the aqueous amine solvents and chemical changes resulting from degradation of the amines. Therefore, if changes of these properties relative to the original solvent properties are monitored during … Lire la suite

2016 — A FIS Risk Analysis Approach as a Tool to Prioritize RisksRésumé
In this work, a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) as a risk analysis tool was developed to prioritize risks. The developed FIS risk analysis tool was applied to assess the risks in a drug dispensing process in a pharmacy, and also in a chemical process industry. The tool uses Bow-tie analysis and fuzzy concepts to analyze and prioritize a risk by computing its score. The risks, risk factors, and impacts were identified based on reported events and expert's knowledge. Bow-tie analysis was used to determine the factors that cause the occurrence of a risk and the impacts of a risk. Fuzzy … Lire la suite

2012 — Disability, Poverty and Welfare Policy: A Critical Disability Theory Analysis of Alberta’s Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped and Implications for SaskatchewanRésumé
Throughout modern history, people with disabilities have been socially and economically excluded and subject to intrusive, segregated services. The systemic exclusion of people with disabilities from mainstream society is a product of entrenched discrimination and the devaluing of their lives. The majority of people with disabilities are left with limited options, forcing them to rely on family members, charity and/or state programs to meet their financial and daily living needs. Disability activists have challenged the hegemonic belief that disability is an individual problem, labeling this the ‘individual pathology’ model of disability. They propose an alternative framework, ‘the social model’ which … Lire la suite

2014 — Battlefords Domestic Violence Treatment Option (BDVTO) Court: Examining the Standpoint of Female VictimsRésumé
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious and complex social issue with potentially fatal consequences. Beginning in the 1990s, specialized domestic violence courts gained prevalence throughout several jurisdictions in Canada as a mechanism to address victims’ needs (i.e. safety, support, participation and empowerment) while, largely by the use of therapeutic jurisprudential tenets, increasing offender accountability. The Battlefords Domestic Violence Treatment Option (BDVTO) began holding bi-weekly docket court on April 10, 2003. This study presents the lived experiences of three female survivors who volunteered to share their standpoint, regarding their involvement with the BDVTO Court. Through the survivors’ detailed first-hand testimonies, … Lire la suite

2022 — Intrusion detection utilizing latent representations & machine learning for network securityRésumé
Digital devices continue to join our networks. As more devices become connected, and systems grow larger, there is a need for security mechanisms. One method of providing security is to use intrusion detection systems. Intrusion detection systems provide a method of security by utilizing the logs from connected devices to inspect traffic. However, as networks grow, the need for scalable and highly automated systems grows as well. The current state of intrusion detection systems relies on linear and non-linear methods to classify traffic. This traffic is routinely compared as either normal traffic or a variant of an attack. Two of … Lire la suite

2019 — Magdaleena: Reconstructing and Redirecting the 'Dominant Gaze'Résumé
Experimental filmmaking, expanded cinema, art films and gallery installations are all terms that are used to describe cinematic work that moves away from its conventional form and towards something unexpected and engaging. Magdaleena is an MFA research project that uses the form of expanded cinema to explore the act of looking and the act of being looked at. The cinematic gaze has been defined by theorists such as Laura Mulvey and Richard Dyer as ‘male gaze’ and ‘white gaze’. Following Dyer’s and Mulvey’s definitions, I will analyze the power relationships hidden in the act of looking, which I describe as … Lire la suite
