2013 — Screening of Polymeric Membranes and Optimization of Operating Conditions for the Treatment of Produced WaterRésumé
Produced water is the largest volume of waste stream obtained from oil and gas production. It affects both aquatic and terrestrial eco-systems if discharged directly into the environment. If the water is treated, it could represent a solution for water scarcity, and would reduce the impact on the environment. Membrane filtration is a type of physical treatment in which two different phases are separated upon application of an external pressure. Polymeric membranes have significant advantages such as low cost and ease of fabrication, but also major disadvantage such as fouling which directly affects the operating cost. Microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), … Lire la suite

2013 — On Being an ESL Teacher in Saskatchewan: Exploring Professional Identity Using Metaphor AnalysisRésumé
This inquiry is an exploration of the professional metaphors ESL teachers in Saskatchewan choose to conceptualize and position themselves as language teachers. By situating the metaphors narratively, within a collective case study, the ways in which they are (in-)formed by experiences as students (the apprenticeship of observation), teachers, and Others are revealed. With the understanding that teacher knowledge is largely tacit and that cultural Othering (native-speakerism) in TESOL persists, this inquiry demonstrates how metaphor analysis can contribute to the reflective practices and professional development of teachers. Key words: metaphor, narrative, identity, TESOL, Othering Lire la suite

2013 — Does Practice Make Perfect in Children's Eyewitness Identifcation AccuracyRésumé
Children accurately identify targets out of police lineups at much lower rates than adults. Furthermore, children presented with a target-absent lineup are much less accurate even when compared to their peers who view target-present lineups. Administering practice lineups to children prior to the real, or forensically relevant, lineup has been proposed in the past as a method to improve accuracy, but current literature has produced unsatisfactory results; improvement in target-absent accuracy is often accompanied by a performance cost for those selecting from a target-present lineup. Additionally, previous efforts have constructed practice lineups too obviously different from forensically relevant lineups, and … Lire la suite

2013 — Development of Scales that Measure Disorder Specific Intolerance of UncertaintyRésumé
Evidence supports intolerance of uncertainty as an important feature of anxiety-based disorders and the construct may also play a role in major depressive disorder. Measures of intolerance of uncertainty have furthered understanding of the construct; however, existing questionnaires measure intolerance of uncertainty in a generalist fashion, not assessing the actual focus of uncertainty (e.g., what someone with panic disorder is uncertain about). This gap in research precludes conclusions regarding the nature of intolerance of uncertainty in anxiety-based disorders and major depressive disorder. The first objective of the study was to develop scales measuring disorder-specific intolerance of uncertainty (DSIU) for generalized … Lire la suite

2023 — Improving applicability of the non-monotone unified estimate for missing dataRésumé
In applied statistics missing data are a common problem. Performing a "complete case analysis" by removing individuals with missing data causes a loss of statistical power and can cause non-response bias. Inverse probability weighting is one method used to avoid non-response bias. However, when some individuals have partially observed data inverse probability weighting has only a limited ability to use this data. The unified approach (Zhao and Liu, 2021) is a modification of inverse probability weighting that uses "working models" to extract information from individuals with partially observed data. When the probability an individual has missing data can be accurately … Lire la suite

2025 — Exploring experiences of mental health and well-being with post-secondary students in rural SaskatchewanRésumé
This study explored the mental health and well-being experiences of post-secondary students in rural Saskatchewan as there is limited research pertaining to this population. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three participants from different rural locations in Saskatchewan who were currently attending a regional college and willing to discuss their experience of mental health and well-being. This study was informed by principles of Narrative Inquiry and a thematic analysis led to the development of four main themes: feelings, prioritization, accessibility, and stressors. The students’ shared stories provided perspective on the experience of mental health and well-being of post-secondary students living in … Lire la suite

2016 — Tradition and Discipline: The Evolution of the Caring Teacher Subjectivity in the Poiesis of the Saskatchewan Educational SystemRésumé
This thesis began as an exploration in to the nature of teacher subjectivity and the ‘truths’ that make up our individual reality. It is the interplay of knowledge/power in the social that generates the discourses that shape the nature of the subjectivities we chose to perform as teachers. These discourses also shape the ‘truths’ that shape our present. To achieve this I have chosen to focus on the school inspectors’ reports to the Ministry of Education during the first twenty years of the Saskatchewan education system. In my analysis of these documents I utilize a Foucauldian lens coupled with Butler’s … Lire la suite

2019 — Furrows of the Field: Methodology in Writing The Religious History of the Canadian PrairiesRésumé
The primary concern of this thesis is explanation of the drastic decline in church attendance that has characterized Prairie religious history, and Canadian history more broadly, over the course of the twentieth and early twenty first centuries. In the case of the Canadian Prairies as a region, this transformation has also been tied up with the change from a heavily social gospel influenced society based on the highly valued ethic of co-operation to a society that is increasingly non-church going and which more highly values the ethic of individualism. While more recent Prairie history has seen the region incorporated into … Lire la suite

2018 — Simulation Study of a High Resolution PET Detector Module with Depth of Interaction InformationRésumé
This work focuses on the simulated performance of a high-resolution, depth-of-interaction (DOI) capable PET detector module with a single-ended readout. I propose the use of a monolithic scintillator up to several centimetres thick directly coupled to a 2D array of Silicon Photomultipliers. High resolution of reconstructed energy and 3D position of gamma rays interacting with the detector is achieved through the implementation of Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) of said parameters. A notable difference in the implementation of MLE described herein is the direct estimation of the interacting gamma-ray energy. Additionally, a performance evaluation of two prominent event windowing techniques used … Lire la suite

2020 — Women's Activity in the Regina Little Theatre Society, 1926 to 1960Résumé
The Little Theatre Movement, an amateur grass-roots theatre movement, in Canada has often been regarded by historians as a “stepping-stone” in the greater cultural nationalist theatre history. As a result, women’s roles in this amateur theatre have either been ignored by scholars or acknowledged and reduced to individual contributions by “great” women. By examining women’s activity in the Regina Little Theatre Society from it’s creation in 1926 up until 1960, this thesis offers not only a celebration of their successes and contributions to the flourishing theatre scene in Regina prior to professionalization, but also an analysis of how their positions … Lire la suite

2022 — The purpose of empire: Popular perceptions of imperialism during and after the Crimean WarRésumé
The following thesis is an exploration of early Victorian Britain and its relationship to the Crimean War of 1854. Beginning with the social and economic malaise of the 1840s, including a succession of military losses or costly colonial campaigns across the Imperial frontier in Afghanistan or Northern India, British society became increasingly concerned with its image as a military superpower amongst other European nations. This anxiety doubled after the birth of the Second French Empire following the 1849 Revolution, and the continued expansion of Russian territory and influence across central Asia under the reign of Tsar Nicholas I. Following a … Lire la suite

2013 — Monte Carlo Simulation of Ultra-Supercritical Pulverized Coal-Fired Power Plant: Efficiency ImprovementRésumé
Coal is the predominant energy source for the world’s electricity generation due to its abundance and low cost compared to other types of fuel. Coal-fired power plants are the primary source of anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2). A reduction of CO2 emissions is required to efficiently operate coal-fired power plants. Efficiency improvement will not only help reduce CO2 emissions, but also produce more electricity with less coal consumption. This can be achieved by either adjusting process operating conditions or replacing existing power plants with new technologies. Ultra-supercritical pulverized coalfired (USC-PC) power plants are one of the available technology options … Lire la suite

2019 — Internet-Delivered Cognitive Processing Therapy for Individuals with a History of Bullying Victimization: A Randomized Controlled TrialRésumé
Bullying victimization is directly associated with a wide array of longstanding psychological problems (e.g., Takizawa Maughan, & Arseneault, 2014; Vaillancourt et al., 2013). Nevertheless, few comprehensive victim-tailored interventions exist that explicitly target the negative impact of bullying. Evidence from both neurobiological and psychological research suggests that victims experience bullying as trauma; therefore, treating the distress associated with bullying victimization using trauma-focused intervention may be beneficial. The purposes of this randomized controlled trial were to: (a)test an internet-delivered, therapist-guided (i.e., therapist monitored client progressthrough the treatment modules and provided feedback and support through secure e-mail messaging) and content-modified (i.e., to fit … Lire la suite

2021 — An Image Generation Methodology for Game Engines in Real-Time Using Generative Deep Learning Inference FrameworksRésumé
Modern video games require image assets for different uses, including representing surface textures of 3D models, like environments, characters or props. These images are commonly generated using photographic and artistic techniques, including hand-drawing and using real-world photographs with additional modifications. This labour-intensive task is typically undertaken by skilled technical artists. However, recently a subset of unsupervised deep machine learning known as Deep Generative Models, have demonstrated the ability to, after sufficient training from an appropriate dataset, create convincing novel counterfeit images mimicking that dataset. This thesis investigates using Deep Generative Models to create image assets for games in real time, … Lire la suite

2016 — FaithApps.Net: A Method for Studying the Dispersal of Religious Smartphone ApplicationsRésumé
The goals of this thesis are to showcase the creation of a method for scraping and cataloging data on smartphone applications that were accumulated under a set criteria of individual religion search parameters. It is through the analysis of this data in tandem with establishing demographics for smartphone use that this thesis explores the relationship between religious community and space and internet communication technologies. To establish this connection this thesis begins by dedicating the first chapter to outlining current scholarship on religious space and community in context of the internet. By creating a baseline for researching religion in the digital … Lire la suite

2017 — Using Data to Inform Appropriateness in Saskatchewan's Health Care System: A Snapshot of Low Acuity Emergency Department UseRésumé
Background Emergency department (ED) use for low acuity medical conditions is widely regarded as a contributor to health system inefficiency. Low acuity conditions are semi-urgent or non-urgent conditions that can safely withstand 60 to 120 minutes prior to physician initial assessment. Low acuity ED attendance diverts limited resources away from patients with urgent conditions and creates increased demand for ED services. Low acuity conditions can also accrue higher costs at EDs than alternative primary care centres due to greater resource consumption and higher specialist fees. Continuity of care is compromised when patients consult EDs for low acuity conditions that have … Lire la suite

2013 — An Effective Polychromatic X-ray Beam for Quantitative Analysis of Fossil CompositionsRésumé
A presentation of preliminary results of an ongoing study of fossils deposited in the Frenchman Formation near Eastend, Saskatchewan and the Wapiti Formation in westcentral Alberta, Canada, is given in this thesis. Specifically, those of a tyrannosaur and a hadrosaur from the Frenchman and Wapiti Formations, respectively, are studied and compared to others from these formations. The bulk of the analysis is done using Synchrotron X-ray Fluorescence data collected at the Canadian Light Source in Saskatchewan, Canada. Several methods to facilitate both qualitative and quantitative analysis of this data are used and developed. In particular, a method for replacing a … Lire la suite

2014 — Paleoecological and paleohydrological reconstruction of Holocene deposits of the Cauca River based on diatoms and sedimentological analysesRésumé
Lithofacies and diatom analyses of the Holocene deposits of Sucre, Las Flores, and the San Nicolás core in the middle Cauca Valley, Colombia, indicate that these sedimentary successions were deposited between ~4,300 and <200 cal yr BP, under different hydrological conditions. Based upon a study of diatoms, dominated by aerophil and benthic taxa, and sedimentological analyses it is suggested that the Sucre section was deposited in a proximal environment as indicated by incipient soils, ephemeral swamps, and high-energy river pulses (i.e., massive layers of coarsening-upwards, fine sand beds), controlled by the periodic flooding of the river floodplain. A fluvio-lacustrine environment … Lire la suite

2013 — From Sarah Smith to Hesba Stretton: Hidden in Plain SightRésumé
Sarah Smith (1832-1911), under the pseudonym of Hesba Stretton, was a popular author of children’s and adult literature in the Victorian era and a founding member of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. This thesis explores how Sarah created herself as the author Hesba Stretton: choosing a pseudonym and subject areas that both revealed and concealed who she was; using the popularity of her works to negotiate with publishers for a living wage for herself and her sister; and parlaying her authorial fame to argue and organize for reform on social issues important to her. Utilizing … Lire la suite
