2016 — Species richness, heterogeneity and nitrogen contributions of roots along an arctic elevation gradientRésumé
Roots allow interactions between plants and their belowground environment. Such interactions are especially important in ecosystems where plant biomass is dominated by roots, such as the Arctic. In contrast, we are still lacking knowledge about roots and belowground processes in many ecological topics. These belowground processes are likely to be altered by climate change. Consequently, we need to know about basic root ecological patterns and processes before we can estimate possible effects of a changing environment on belowground processes and thus whole ecosystems. The aim of my thesis was to examine three of those basic root ecological patterns and processes: … Lire la suite

2019 — Reading Between The Lines: A Critical Examination of Social Work Education in Vietnam Through The Eyes of the EducatorsRésumé
The profession of social work in Việt Nam is rebuilding, and as a result, social work education is in a period of rapid change. However, the literature about social work in Việt Nam is sparse, and there is limited research describing social work education in detail or the perceptions of Vietnamese social work educators regarding the current state of social work education in Việt Nam. Việt Nam’s history of colonialism and professional imperialism within international social work points to the need for a closer examination of social work education in Việt Nam and the perception of social work educators to … Lire la suite

2021 — Sunlight-Induced Changes in Photosensitizing Properties of Dissolved Organic Carbon in Canadian Prairie Pothole Wetland PondsRésumé
Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is an important component of the global carbon cycle, acting in part as a potential source of carbon for microorganisms, support of flocculation of heavy metals and nutrients to sediments, as well as a protective barrier between ultraviolet radiation and aquatic organisms. In my thesis, chapter 1 is a literature review with general background information about the photodegradation process of DOC in Prairie Pothole Region (PPR). In chapter 2, I used an incubation experiment with light and depth as treatments to examine photodegradation impacts on the optical characterization of DOC in prairie wetland ponds at the … Lire la suite

2022 — Systematic implementation and evaluation of an app-based community platform for assessing pain in long-term care facilitiesRésumé
Pain is under-assessed and under-addressed among older adults living in long-term care (LTC) facilities. The Pain Assessment Checklist for Seniors with Limited Ability to Communicate-II (PACSLAC-II) is a validated assessment tool for health professionals to assess pain in residents with dementia. A tablet app, based on the PACSLAC-II, has been shown to have clinical utility. This study involved the systematic implementation and evaluation of a new community platform that works in conjunction with an updated PACSLAC-II app. The community platform is comprised of (a) a quality indicator (QI) feature, which allows health care professionals to view and share their unit … Lire la suite

2020 — An Examination of the Discourses Present in Women's Tackle Football and Their Effects on the Development of the GameRésumé
Women’s football is gaining popularity in North America. There are currently twelve Canadian women’s teams, throughout six provinces. Unlike hockey, which sees a variance in rules between the women’s and men’s game, women’s football shares the same rules, regulations and equipment requirements as their male counterparts. Hypothetically, women’s football could become as popular as the men’s game but development remains slow. Fairclough, Mulderrig and Woldak’s (2011) systemic approach towards the relationship that exists between language and existing social structures, known as Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) (Fairclough, 2012; 2013), was used to guide this qualitative study about discourses related to women’s … Lire la suite

2022 — Examining the effects of legal articulation in memory accuracyRésumé
The present research investigated the effects of legal articulation on police cadet memory performance in applied contexts. Legal articulation is a memory retrieval framework used by police officers to recall their actions for legal procedures and courtroom testimony. This research compared the level of detail (quantity) and accuracy (quality) of police cadet’s memories for a low-stress crime event under two different memory retrieval frameworks: legal articulation and serial recall. The findings can be used to guide police training programs to use procedures that support reliable memory recalls. No significant differences were found after the initial retrieval; however, significant differences were … Lire la suite

2017 — Study of Ionic Liquids as Effective Solvents for Enhanced Heavy Oil RecoveryRésumé
Injecting chemicals in reservoirs is an efficient technique to improve oil recovery. In this study, several types of Ionic Liquids (ILs) were initially screened using the Conductorlike Screening Model for Realistic Solvents (COSMO-RS) model. COSMO-RS, in particular, is capable of providing predictions of the thermodynamics properties of ILs. A comprehensive screening study of 148 probable cations and 46 anions was performed in order to shed some light on the interaction of ILs with hydrocarbons via the calculation of the capacity of the screened ILs to hydrocarbons fractions and water. The most suitable ILs for our purposes were chosen, and employed … Lire la suite

2019 — The Effect of Isokinetic Exercise for Prehabilitation: ACL ReconstructionRésumé
Preparing for the stress of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction (ACLR) surgery through prehabilitation may improve strength and function before surgery, and if effective, has the potential to contribute to postoperative recovery. The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the effectiveness of using isokinetic exercise for prehabilitation of patients with complete ACL tears, awaiting ACLR surgery. Patients with complete ACL tears, and scheduled for ACLR were randomized into the isokinetic exercise training group or the control group. The isokinetic exercise training group completed an isokinetic strengthening program that included isokinetic concentric exercise for the injured knee, 20 times over … Lire la suite
