Among all the sexualities we encounter in the animal world, only the human one is disjointed from reproduction: for us, there is a gap between “instinct” and “drive.” Human sexuality is neither natural nor counternatural, it is un-natural. By rooting it in the infantile and by dissociating the sexual and the genital, Freud and psychoanalysis have in a way “prolonged” this emancipation of sexuality. The idea of a primacy of gender over sex, which goes so far as to assert a polymorphism that multiplies the genders well beyond two, can be understood as a way of deepening the “criticism” of nature and of the dominant—namely, heterosexual and patriarchal—ideology. However, is the unconscious the witness of our present time or is it “politically incorrect”?

Social representations of sexuality and gender have profoundly changed since Freud, and even more intensely in recent decades. But what about the clinical experience of the psychoanalyst today, and what theoretical consequences can we draw from it? After having gone over the classic psychoanalytic conceptions of psychic bisexuality and underlined that a certain identification always takes place before the assumption and decision of the gendered self, some clinical cases will allow us to highlight various nuances in the experience of the gender, as well as the persistence of anxieties and a certain destiny of fantasy within gender identifications. The most original element of human sexuality may still have its roots in fantasy, and the most sexual sex might always be that which this fantasy imagines.

Trans people challenge society, and theoretical and political debates are too often confined within a chiasmus that articulates an apology of identity and liberation and a warning about the loss of immemorial references. But how can we get out of this opposition if not by trying to understand the lived experience of the people we are talking about? This text seeks to integrate empirical data, clinical experiences, phenomenology and contemporary gender theories to understand the experience of the self of trans and non-binary people. In their existence, trans people highlight what is already present: the subversion of the binary gender system, but also the connections between body modifications and the construction of the Subject. Trans subjectivities are not a mere replica of an idea about the feminine and the masculine, they express something beyond and speak of multiplicity, of becoming, of relationships and of the importance of felt body. The bodies are considered as signifying materialities and as the origin and place of trans becoming. Arising from phenomenology, new materialism proposes a conceptual tool to apprehend these affected, meaningful and transformative materialities.

The process of puberty opens up significant changes in the construction of identity, on the background of the changes of the narcissistic-object during adolescence. Sexual violence in adolescence can be considered as a marker of a failure of puberty rearrangements, in the context of the traumatic re-actualization of an injured narcissism. Following the presentation of theoretical perspectives on identity in its relation to narcissism, the presentation of the psychoanalytic treatment of teenagers allows for a clarification of the stakes at play in a suffering identity.

This paper text seeks to locate psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy on a continuum, in light of the notion of the “work of transference.” These different settings give the conditions for a “transference demand upon the mind” of both the analysand and the analyst, and the conditions for the interpretation “of” the transference and “in” the transference. These three forms of the work of transference are examined. The paper proposes that the demand coming from the transference at work requires from the therapist not only a solid training but also a personal and intimate experience of transference within a personal analysis. Finally, the text puts forward the idea of a radical break between psychoanalytic psychotherapies and “psychoanalytically informed therapies.”

This article considers the possibilities offered by linguistic pragmatics and rhetoric for the analysis of research interviews. Using examples, the article shows how it is possible, through the form of the discourse and the ways of saying, to disentangle the meaning of the discourse, from the implicit content to the unconscious content of the subject’s speech addressed to the researcher. Travelling through words also calls for the passage through the assignment of places for the researcher and the interlocutor who speaks to him: a conversational exchange where thought is developed.

Anna Freud is Sigmund Freud’s sixth and youngest child. She became the caretaker of the psychoanalytical legacy and founded, with or against Melanie Klein, child psychoanalysis. However, all of this did not occur without ambiguity and controversy. She was in analysis with her father, and in 1922 she wrote a paper about her fantasies, just as Freud did before (A Child Is Beaten, 1919). She was secretly labeled and criticized as an old maid and as a lesbian. The link between her analysis with Freud and her being chosen to represent psychoanalysis was publicly questioned, as she was caught in this legacy. Did she sacrifice her own life and sublimate her libido for him, therefore becoming his “Antigone,” as he named her? In this paper, I analyze our gaze on her in regard to the paradox between love in reality and faithfulness to memory. Although her attachment to her father’s legacy deprived her in a way, recent papers show how she lived a long life after his death, a life in which she loved, created and found her own path.
