This article analyses Nine Moons (2009), by the Peruvian writer Gabriela Wiener, in relation to the concept of play in the creation of the novel, the development of the protagonist as a mother, as well as the dismantling of normative notions of motherhood. Although motherhood as a patriarchal institution is, according to Adrienne Rich, full of norms that oppress women, whether they are mothers or not, it can also be a site of (possible) resistance. I argue how through play Nine Moons separates motherhood from natural processes and exposes its constructed quality, restoring independence and autonomy to the process of gestation.

Este artículo analiza Nueve lunas (2009) de la escritora peruana Gabriela Wiener con relación al concepto de juego, tanto en la creación de la novela y la gestación de la protagonista, como en la desarticulación de nociones normativas de la maternidad. Si bien la maternidad es una institución patriarcal llena de preceptos que, como indica Adrienne Rich, no hacen sino oprimir a las mujeres que son y no son madres, también puede ser lugar de (una posible) resistencia. Argumento cómo por medio del juego Nueve lunas distancia la maternidad de los procesos naturales y expone su carácter construido, restituyendo al proceso de gestación independencia y autonomía.

Propone que los paramilitares de principios del siglo XX lucharon una guerra perpetua contra un enemigo absoluto, y que La vorágine desvela el horror paramilitar sobre el que el Estado nación moderno colombiano se establece. Sostiene que, en su denuncia de los crímenes del Putumayo, la novela llama al Estado a luchar una guerra similar a la paramilitar: por la expropiación y la explotación de la tierra.

This article considers the order of accumulation in La vorágine and understands the infrastructure of armed individuals that sustains it as paramilitaries, thus questioning the narrative that sees paramilitarism as a recent phenomenon. It claims that paramilitaries from the beginning of the twentieth century fought a perpetual war against an absolute enemy, and that Rivera’s novel unveils the paramilitary horror upon which the modern Colombian nation-state is established. It maintains that the novel, in its denunciation of the horrors of the Putumayo, calls for the state to wage a paramilitary war for the expropriation and exploitation of natural resources.

Este ensayo explora la estética de lo grotesco en la novela La romería (1910) de Manuel Ciges Aparicio como mecanismo de denuncia del sistema de la Restauración (1874-1931). Como tal, anticipa muchas de las temáticas presentes en las mejores obras esperpénticas de Ramón del Valle-Inclán. De hecho, La romería, por un lado, y el esperpento valleinclaniano, por el otro, reflejan el mismo clima de hipocresía, farsa y mediocridad prevalente durante el régimen ideado por Antonio Cánovas del Castillo.

This article examines the aesthetics of the grotesque in Manuel Ciges Aparicio’s novel The Procession (1910) as a form of expression whose aim is to denounce the Spanish Restoration System (1874-1931). As such, this novel anticipates many of the themes and motifs present in Ramón del Valle-Inclán’s best-known and celebrated esperpentos. Indeed, The Procession, on the one hand, and the esperpentos, on the other, reflect the same political climate of hypocrisy, mediocrity, and farce prevalent during the regime established by Antonio Cánovas del Castillo.

Este artículo analiza los personajes negros de una novela breve de Cervantes (El celoso extremeño) y dos de Zayas (El prevenido engañado y Tarde llega el desengaño). Por un lado, examinaré los rasgos estereotípicos de estos personajes. Por otro lado, mi tesis central es que estas novelas también admiten lecturas antirracistas. Los esclavos literarios de Cervantes y Zayas no son víctimas desvalidas, sino seres con dignidad, agudeza y determinación para alcanzar sus fines. Dado que este enfoque es aplicable a otros textos, propongo una revisión de la literatura sobre la esclavitud en el mundo hispánico global del siglo XVII.

This article analyses the black characters of one novella by Cervantes (El celoso extremeño) and two by Zayas (El prevenido engañado and Tarde llega el desengaño). On the one hand, I will examine the stereotypical features of these characters. On the other hand, my main thesis is that these novellas also allow anti-racist readings. Cervantes’ and Zayas’ literary slaves are not helpless victims, but rather characters with dignity, wit, and determination to achieve their ends. Since these findings are applicable to other texts, I propose a revision of literature on slavery in the global Hispanic world of the seventeenth century.

Se exploran en este artículo las relaciones de Rosaura con otros personajes: su padre, su madre, su amante (Astolfo) y su rival (Estrella), además de Segismundo en la obra La vida es sueño de Pedro Calderón de la Barca. Al ser reconocida por su padre, Rosaura recobra su honor y puede desposar a Astolfo. Pero el reconocimiento paterno es sustancialmente obra de la propia Rosaura, quien debe por tanto ser vista como agente de su destino y figura crucial en el desenlace de la obra. Finalmente, Rosaura (Astrea) deshace la estrella fatal que aprisionaba a Segismundo y lo impulsa a casarse con Estrella, a la vez doble y rival romántica de Rosaura.

This article deals with Rosaura’s relationships to other characters: her father, her mother, her lover (Astolfo), and her rival (Estrella), in addition to Segismundo in Pedro Calderón de la Barca’s play La vida es sueño. By being recognized by her father, Rosaura recovers her honor and can marry Astolfo. But Clotaldo’s recognition is substantially caused by Rosaura herself; she must therefore be viewed as the agent of her own destiny as well as an essential figure in the play’s denouement. Finally, Rosaura (Astrea) undoes the fatal star that held Segismundo in its grip and moves him to marry Estrella, who is both her double and romantic rival.

This article argues that the impact of what Lomnitz has termed Mexico’s “national anthropology,” which structured indigenismo and mestizaje as official institutional projects, also reverberated in the representation of Indigeneity in Mexican mid-twentieth-century cinema. Proposing the concept of “ethnographic seeping,” this study illustrates how the ethnographic mode recurs parenthetically in commercial and independent Indigenous-themed narrative films intended for popular audiences and/or prestige venues. While ethnographic seeping enacted a distanced and appropriative relationality between spectators and Indigenous Mexicans, it also functioned critically to contest official aims and perspectives.

Proponiendo el concepto de “ethnographic seeping” este estudio ilustra cómo el modo etnográfico aparece de manera parentética en películas sobre indígenas que fueron creadas para el consumo comercial y/o de prestigio. Aunque ethnographic seeping ha realizado una relacionalidad caracterizada por la distancia y la apropiación, también ha operado de manera crítica para disputar perspectivas y objetivos oficiales.

This article analyzes death, violence, and machismo in two Mexican films by Luis Buñuel, El río y la muerte (1954) and Ensayo de un crimen (1955), starting from a naturalist perspective (Deleuze, 1986) and applying the concept of “entropic” humour (O’Neill, 1990). Despite numerous studies on surrealist humour in Buñuel’s films, it is necessary to investigate how his “peculiar” black humour operates, both in his naturalist works and in a Mexican context, “the chosen land of black humour” (Breton, 1941). I contend that both films satirically link violent impulses and stereotypical cultural constructions surrounding death in Mexico.

Este artículo analiza la muerte, la violencia y el machismo en dos películas mexicanas de Luis Buñuel, El río y la muerte (1954) y Ensayo de un crimen (1955), partiendo de una perspectiva naturalista (Deleuze, 1986) y aplicando el concepto del humor “entrópico” (O’Neill, 1990). Pese a muchos estudios sobre el humor surrealista en sus películas, es necesario investigar cómo su “peculiar” humor negro funciona, tanto en sus obras naturalistas como en México, “el país elegido del humor negro” (Breton, 1941). Sostengo que ambas películas vinculan satíricamente impulsos violentos y construcciones culturales estereotípicas entorno a la muerte en México.

Las tierras arrasadas exemplifies the contribution that literary form makes to representations of the violence Central American migrants suffer in Mexican territory and of the stories they tell. My analysis compares the incorporation of actual migrants’ testimonials with the words associated with Merolico, a fictional migrant who, decades earlier, committed atrocities in an unnamed Central American counterinsurgency. The novel situates the migration crisis in a hemispheric context that elucidates an economy that depends upon the absolute commodification of human beings. I conclude that the intertextual structure of Tierras undermines forms of temporality and subjectivity that sustain such an economy.

Las tierras arrasadas ejemplifica la contribución que hace la forma literaria a la representación de la violencia sufrida por migrantes centroamericanos en México y de las historias que cuentan. Mi análisis compara la incorporación de testimonios de migrantes actuales con las palabras asociadas con el personaje de Merolico, un migrante ficticio que décadas atrás cometía atrocidades en una contrainsurgencia centroamericana innominada. La novela sitúa la crisis migratoria en un contexto hemisférico que elucida una economía que mercantiliza absolutamente al ser humano. Concluyo que la estructura intertextual de Tierras subvierte formas de temporalidad y subjetividad que sostienen tal tipo de economía.

Tras la resaca de más de 40 años de dictadura franquista, Iván Zulueta “irrumpe” en el panorama cinematográfico español con una obra tan inclasificable como vanguardista: Arrebato (1979). Se trataba de un filme tremendamente rupturista, tanto en el abordaje de las temáticas tratadas (drogas, sexo, y esmerada renovación de la tradición vampírica) como en su valiente concesión a la experimentación sonora y visual tomada del cine underground neoyorkino y barcelonés de los años 60 y 70. Pero, Arrebato, fue, ante todo, un filme autobiográfico, autorreferencial y visionario. Zulueta y Arrebato convergen y se entreveran en un mismo e inequívoco relato de fantaterror. El presente artículo despeja las claves interpretativas de esta relación siamesa entre el autor y su única obra testamentaria, aportando nuevas apreciaciones sobre una de las películas más singulares del catálogo fílmico español.

After the hangover of over forty years of Franco’s dictatorship, Iván Zulueta breaks into Spanish cinematographic scene with a film as avantgarde as it is unclassifiable: Rapture (1979). It is a breakthrough film not only in the subjects it deals with (drugs, sex, and a renewed vampiric tradition), but also in the brave concession to sound and visual experimentation taken from New York and Barcelona’s underground cinema of the 60s and 70s. But Rapture was, above all, an autobiographical, self-referential, and visionary film. Zulueta and Rapture converge and intermingle in the same unequivocal fantasy tale. This paper clarifies the interpretive keys of this Siamese relationship between the author and his only testamentary work, bringing new insights into one of the most unique films in Spain’s film catalog.

Este trabajo se centra en Los malcasados de Valencia, original obra de Guillén de Castro en la que la acción dramática empieza donde la tradicional comedia termina (el matrimonio) y cuya conclusión es inaudita en el teatro áureo: la nulidad matrimonial y disolución de dos parejas de casados. No es una crítica de la institución matrimonial, sino de las actitudes y comportamientos que llevan al fracaso del matrimonio. El donjuanismo, los celos, un deseo sexual incontrolado, la pusilanimidad y la sed de venganza hacen que todos los protagonistas sean, en cierta manera, culpables y responsables de su destino.

This article examines Los malcasados de Valencia, an original play by Guillén de Castro, in which the dramatic action starts where the typical comedia ends (marriage) and concludes with an unheard-of closure: the marital nullity and dissolution of two couples. We propose an interpretation of the play, as a critique not of matrimony, but rather of attitudes and behaviors that cause marriage to fail: a womanizing personality, jealousy, excessive sexual desire, faintheartedness, and the desire for revenge. All the main characters are, in one way or another, guilty of their own actions and the consequences of those actions.

In this article, I expand upon Olaziregi’s foundational investigation of heterotopias in El hombre solo (1994) in order to further elaborate on the function of the hotel site in both this and Atxaga’s subsequent 1995 novel, Esos cielos. Through a comparative analysis of these novels – both foundational texts in the development of new narrative of the Basque conflict in the nineteen-nineties – I argue that the hotel functions as a heterotopia of crisis, and that the protagonists’ presence there catalyzes the fundamental dilemma of contemporary Basque identity lying at the heart of both novels.

En esta investigación, amplío la investigación fundamental de Olaziregi sobre las heterotopias en El hombre solo (1994) con el fin de profundizar en la función del sitio del hotel tanto en esta como en la siguiente novela de Atxaga, Esos cielos (1995). A través de un análisis comparativo de estas novelas – ambas fundacionales en el desarrollo de la nueva narrativa del conflicto vasco en los años noventa – sostengo que el hotel funciona como una heterotopia de crisis y que la presencia de los protagonistas allí cataliza el dilema central de la identidad vasca contemporánea en ambas novelas.
