The rising prevalence of chronic diseases, including those that are preventable, underlines important limitations of the healthcare perspectives commonly used. We argue that a better understanding of “prendre soin” (caring), which is not limited to medical or nursing procedures, nor to nursing science, is necessary to improve health practices and outcomes. “Prendre soin de la santé” or PSS (taking care of health or caring), which includes “prendre soin de soi” (taking care of oneself or self-care), is a concept broader than compliance to treatment and disease or health management. This paper aims at exploring the interest of PSS for healthcare. A literature review was conducted to examine the philosophical, theoretical and practical underpinnings of “prendre soin” in relation to other approaches, including caring, and current challenges. The proposed analysis is situated within the context of diabetic youth and their families' health care. For this particular situation and others, PSS carries possibilities for improving the assistance and quality of life of the persons affected and to foster prevention.

The search for forms of recovery following difficult or even traumatic events often involves considering speech as an instrument for personal and social transformation. Driven by ethical and epistemological concerns of a non-Aboriginal researcher conducting collaborative research into the disappearances and murders of Aboriginal women and girls in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, this article investigates more specifically the frequent association between remembering and the search for “wellness.” After introducing the foundations of this research, which are based on orality as a means of transmitting knowledge across generations, I will explore conceptions of wellness and healing arising from Aboriginal scientific literature. Then, emphasizing the relational dimension to the foundation of First Nations' storytelling, I will reveal two conceptions of stories: one conceiving them as “medicines” that bring together the strength of ancestors; the other dealing with them as teachings promoting cultural identity and traditional knowledge. In closing, I will talk about some tensions surrounding the willingness to illuminate complex issues, while reflecting on the conditions of listening to these stories and the challenges of representing and interpreting this experiential knowledge.

AbstractThis paper describes the statistical trends that characterise the process of becoming residentially independent in Canada among individuals born between 1942 and 1981. It starts by situating this process into the more general context of the entry into adulthood and then gives an overview of the timing and intensity of first home-leaving episodes and first returns to the parental home using data drawn from the 2001 General Social Survey. Comparisons are made between genders, provinces and birth cohorts. Specific attention is also paid to the reasons given by the respondents to account for these departures and returns. Results reveal a trend toward a prolongation of youth, conceived as an intermediate stage between adolescence and adulthood, as well as an increasing propensity to enter full residential independence through semi-autonomy.

This article is an attempt to investigate the various meanings of the words « postmodernity », « postmodernism » and « postmodern ». It also assesses the significance of these words and of the concepts that they express for criminology. The paper is divided in three parts. The first part tries to dispell important misunderstandings that have sprung in relation to postmodernisrn. The most significant of these is the belief that there is such a thing as a postmodernist « method » in the social sciences. The second part identifies the origin of the term « postmodern » and discusses various themes which are perceived to be characteristic of postmodern thought. These themes are : the present legitimation crisis, the internal reflexivity of scientific theory, discourse analysis and meta-language, social and cultural fragmentation and historical pessimism. The last part draws the consequences of the preceding analyses for the development of criminology.

Keywords: Postmodernité, méthode, pensée postmoderne, analyse du discours, métalangage, fragmentation sociale, Postmodernism, method, postmodern thought, discourse analysis, meta-language, social fragmentation, Postmodernidad, método, pensamiento postmoderno, análisis de discurso, meta-lenguaje, fragmentación social

AbstractThis article formulates and then examines the hypothesis that a drop in fertility and the demographic ageing in the Greater Québec City area are directly linked to the conception, realization, development and inflation of the ideal of suburban life. This ideal places growing pressure on family life and contributes to the disintegration of formerly healthy urban and rural areas. In three steps, we will look at the genesis of demographic ageing as an effect of the post-1945 urbanization and interpret four statistical portraits – housing stock, population, ages and types of households in 1951, 1966, 1986 and 2006 – in various urban and suburban spaces. The idealization of suburban life proves to be the common denominator in families' exodus to housing developments, their growing concentration in outlaying areas, the heightened sensitivity of families' fertility to their economic situations and contemporary families' stress levels.

This article is based on fifty testimonies by Algonquins of Three Rivers or ‘Magouas'. They deal with family memories, Indian origins, self perception and the dominant group's perception of their identity. The research is related to a legal claim for Indian status by 350 Algonquins. Segregation and prejudice (“uncivilized savages”) have long afflicted this population, which is characterized by the maintenance of an endogamous marriage system and classificatory kinship. The main identity markers deal with memory, history, genealogy, mobility related to hunting, unskilled jobs and poverty, and finally to a specific relationship to nature. The Algonquins are still here.

The literature on the relations between Quebec and France frequently points to interpersonal problems between the individuals from these two societies – problems that manifest, for example, in Quebeckers referring to the French as the “maudit Français.” At the root of this malaise is a sentiment of distrust, purportedly long-standing, of French Quebeckers for the French. A previous study of ours confirmed the existence of this malaise through interviews effected among some 20 French management professionals living and working in Quebec in 2004. In this article, we explore this question with a survey conducted in 2009 with 930 French people living and working in Quebec. Our results indicate that the malaise is still strongly felt by a good proportion of individuals from this group. It appears that those who feel the malaise the strongest are those who came to Quebec mainly for work reasons, while those who came for the quality of life or the cultural experience feel it a lot less strongly.
