Temporality of human and social phenomena raises theoretical complex issues and specific technical challenges, including analyzing and visualizing of temporal information. This paper proposes an operational typology of three kinds of time: schedule-time, process-time and succession-time. Then it illustrates the usefulness of this typology through three case studies dealing with mobility (residential trajectories, programs of activities and daily trips, routes of freight delivery). These examples are analyzed using longitudinal data and several modes of graphical representation (distribution plot, sequence frequency plot, slide plot). Our approach is willing to enrich and clarify the understanding of time as an attribute into a statistical information system. This approach is inductive and pragmatic: we started with specific thematic and technical issues regarding the analysis and the graphical representation of longitudinal data to move towards theoretical specifications of time. In short, we tried to model an appropriate time to our research objects. This research approach is rendered in reverse in the article: from the theoretical thinking about time to the field of spatial mobility.

This article addresses the transition to university of francophone students from New Brunswick. Based on 40 biographical interviews and an interactionist research framework, it highlights similarities in the way that the respondents relate to their transition to postsecondary studies. The article then establishes three portraits of educational careers, which demonstrate that the structural determining elements of transitions should be considered in relation to the multiplicity of the interdependent relations of students. Lastly, it queries the joined effects of the process of educational guidance and the institutional strategies for geographic retention on educational careers.

Quebec adult education plays a major role in the overall diplomation rates of youths who do not obtain their diplomas in regular settings. The notable increase of youths aged between 16 and 24 years old in the adult education centers, their heterogeneity and their needs, currently stand among the most crucial challenges faced by these school settings. This article presents a research conducted with 386 youths enrolled in adult education centers in Quebec. We used a latent class analysis in order to gain a better understanding of these youths in terms of psychosocial characteristics and profiles. Results show that four profiles can be distinguished from our sample. Profiles can be understood with regards to the contemporary features of the transition to adulthood, the developmental tasks at stake, the elevated and various risk factors found in youths' past trajectories. Results are discussed in light of the respective needs of these four profiles and complementary services that should be provided to meet these needs.

Inspired by concerns about the issue of dropouts in distance education, this study explores the effects of individual tutoring measures on the students' self-efficacy beliefs and persistence. A mixed methodology was used, with a quasi-experimental study of 778 participants and an analysis of individual telephone interviews. Persistence rates were higher in the experimental group where individual tutoring was introduced. The qualitative analysis demonstrated that the tutors' interventions were well received and contributed to further contact between the tutors and the students.

AbstractSince the mid-1990s, various social movements have contested the market economy, which they see as an active source of societal disorders including the degradation of the environment, the jeopardizing of small producers, and the exploitation of workers in the global South. At issue is the neo-liberal ideology, which exercises a variety of forms of power while imposing economic rationality as the sole guiding principle to direct and determine market interests, both private and public. Consumers appear at once as targets of these movements, when their passive contribution to the negative external aspects of market operatives is questioned, as resources in attempts to mobilize them to apply economic pressures, and also as challengers when the consumer citizenry applies pressure on public bodies to alter market regulations.
