In 2008, as I would wander the construction sites in the Great West of France on every occasion I had, I discovered a RORC (Royal Oceanic Racing Club) Class III Bermudian sloop with a “canoe” stern designed by Cornu in 1948. This magnificent small sailboat could have been left to decay until it disappeared. But no, with one of these crazy decisions you take but never regret, I decided otherwise. As soon as I bought it, and as I was waiting for it to be repaired, I looked up the history of this racer-cruiser and its crews… Upon the discovery of an honourable record and a history linked to the icon of French sailing, its classification as a “monument historique” came to mind, and it was at that moment that I took on the role of a history and heritage facilitator, and that writing a book became the obvious thing to do.

Taking inspiration from Robert Melançon's work on the dysphoria, euphoria and mythification structuring the representation of the New World in the account of Jacques Cartier's travels, the author of this text analyzes La grande épopée de Jacques Cartier, a series of novels for young people written by Eugène Achard between 1935 and 1942, in which the landscape is invested with a French Canadian identity that it lacked at the time of the discovery.

An inquiry covering the whole French territory together with specific studies of natural and artificial reservoirs has been made to assess the human health risk related to the prolifération of toxin producing blue green algae (cyanobacteria). The conclusions show that any lentic ecosystem can be affected like it has been shown already in other countries all over the world and more specifically within the EU. The main genus concemed are: Microcystis, Planktothrix, Anabœna and Cylindrospermopsis.Blooms can occur juring the whole year since some species are well adapted to cold water and are not clearly linked with the trophic status of the aquatic ecosystem.The toxinic production is the largest when the cyanobacteria populations contain only a few number of species. The results of recent works are well correlated with our findings which show that the production of toxic heptapeptides (microcystins) could be correlated with high levels of nitrate and depletions of ammonium and iron.The follow up of this work should now include the set up of a national observatory of toxic algal blooms.
