This text paints a portrait of privateering and privateers on Île Royale (Cape Breton) during two colonial conflicts between France and England in the second half of the 18th century. The aim is not only to examine the functioning of this maritime activity, but also to test the hypothesis that it was orchestrated by a micro-society composed of colonial administrators, military officers, commercial ship-owners, ship captains, and crews. We will show that, just as in fishing and maritime trade, these players joined forces, but sometimes clashed over how to share the profits from privateering. More specifically, we will dissect the fundamental issues of the threat posed by English privateers cruising off Louisbourg, French losses, French management and assessment of catches, the methods of sales, and the fate of prisoners. Archival research also enables us to learn more about secondary issues, such as the routes of captured English ships, their crews, cargoes, shipowners, and, finally, the fate of the wounded and loss of life.

At the crossroads of cultural sociology, musicology and fan studies, this article investigates opera fan communities in the digital age. This research, carried out between 2019 and 2023, employs a qualitative and comparative methodology combining digital ethnography with on-site participant observation in opera houses. The main case studies are the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Who controls the Kingdom Hearts franchise? This article examines this question using a mixed industrial and promotional approach to seek moments of revelation about the creation and status of the Kingdom Hearts franchise for both of its conglomerate co-creators, Disney and Square Enix. Disney’s conglomerated industrial practice has long been assessed for adherence to the concept of synergy. By examining where and how synergy was adopted as an industrial logic within the creation of the Kingdom Hearts franchise, and Kingdom Hearts III in particular, I argue that it is in moments of tension, that we can find the most instructive evidence for who controls the games we play. Following work by Janet Wasko (2001) and Barbara Klinger (1999) in particular, I first look across the shared discursive history of the franchise and then at the promotion of Kingdom Hearts III for instances where synergy breaks down or becomes contested. These, I contend, demonstrate the limits of the logical of synergy in cross-cultural, transindustrial production cultures.

AbstractAs the Malacca and Singapore Straits are part of the shortest route between Europe and Asia, any impedance to shipping has serious military and commercial repercussions. A series of issues are raised : what are the major threats to maritime security and sea lines of communications ; what measures have been taken to protect navigational safety; and what would be the consequences to tankers and container shipping if access was restricted or prohibited ? These issues are addressed by examining navigational safety and oil pollution, piracy and armed robbery, and the measures taken by the littoral and user states in combating them. An assessment of the cost of using alternative routes to the Straits is made. Distinctions are explored between tanker and container shipping to challenge the conventional wisdom on choke-points.
