AbstractIn the Greek language of the 1st century Palestinian Judaism, the term koinon indicates ritual impurity. Its use as a criterion of exclusion from the new Jerusalem in Rev. 21,27 stands against all the passages of the New Testament rejecting the very notion of ritual purity and the rules deriving from it. The goal of this article is to draw the attention to this aspect of the Book of Revelation which has been overlooked until now and which should be added to the Jewish side of the work of John of Patmos.

The neighbourhood of Mouraria in the center of Lisbon is today home to three main groups of residents: traditional residents, new gentrifiers, and immigrants. This diversity is simultaneously a strength of and a threat to its social cohesion and its current urban rehabilitation process, undertaken by the City Council of Lisbon (CCL). This study has three main goals: 1) to analyze how the ‘community identity’ maps of the neighbourhood are constructed by residents’ discourse; 2) to analyze how the ‘official’ cultural map of the neighbourhood is constructed in the discourses of the press and the CCL; and 3) to compare the ‘official’ and the ‘community’ maps. In drafting the ‘community’ maps, 22 interviews were conducted with traditional residents (14), new gentrifiers (6), and immigrants (2). The ‘official’ cultural map was re-constructed through a press analysis (four articles from two reference newspapers: Público, 2014; Expresso, 2013) and an in-depth interview with the coordinator of the CCL office in Mouraria. Findings show that the rehabilitation program is represented in the ‘official’ discourse in a more positive way than in residents’ discourses. The main divergence concerns the targets of the intervention. However, in both discourses there is agreement regarding the social problems of Mouraria. The stories of the past told by traditional residents, although mentioning the loss of the traditional character of Mouraria, show the importance of public spaces for place attachment and place identity. The discourses of new residents highlight the role of places in building connections between past and present, and in helping maintain a sense of continuity. We discuss the importance of community identity mapping in understanding the ‘battle of ideas’ around urban rehabilitation and the impact that different perspectives can have. The study can be a source of information for decision-makers, helping strengthen the communication bridge between them and the community.

This paper will explore how the criminal justice system’s ingrained prejudice against LGBTQ2S+ people can lead to wrongful convictions. Primarily, this paper will focus on the negative stereotypes of and myths surrounding queer people, rooted in homophobia and transphobia, that lead to wrongful convictions. Examining the cases of Miguel Castillo, Bernard Baran, The San Antonio Four, and Monica Jones, this paper will prove that these pervasive and dangerous stereotypes impact queer people at every step of the criminal justice system. This paper will conclude by briefly discussing instances of queer wrongful convictions in the Canadian context.

This text proposes the analysis of article 1134 of the French Civil Code “Les conventions légalement formées tiennent lieu de loi à ceux qui les ont faites” in the light of the revolutionary period and certain of its actors. Thus, the preference of the legislator of 1804 for the word "convention" rather than "contract" can be questioned according to an approach developed by the historian Reinhart Koselleck; and in the spirit of the philosophies of law and politics of Miguel Abensour; Boyan Manchev; and Laurent de Sutter. The objective being to propose how to laugh at the laws, the magistrate and the gods in contractual rights. Something like a little legal manual for “anarchist/prostitute”, which “figures out the true meaning of contractual freedom.”

This article examines the different types of sexual violence inflicted on enslaved females who were captured during the War of Candia (1645–69). Women and girls constituted an exceptionally high percentage of the individuals enslaved in the course of this religiously justified war. Many of the captured Muslims were trafficked to Catholic Europe, where they were subjected to various forms of sexual exploitation. Yet this article suggests that the prolonged conflict also gave rise to Italian slavers’ sexual violence against enslaved females who were, in fact, not Muslims. It then illuminates the role that religious affiliation actually played in shaping local reactions to the rapes, as well as the responses of Church and state authorities to supplications asking to liberate the survivors of repeated sexual abuse. Finally, the article argues that taking sexual violence into consideration complicates our understanding of early modern Mediterranean enslavement, its motivations, and its implications.

Over the past decades, artisanal mining has become increasingly important in several West African countries. Various recent studies have shown that it represents a crucial livelihood strategy for many rural households. At the same time, the development of artisanal mining, which is mostly informal, has raised concerns about its social and environmental sustainability.Based on a detailed study of a small-scale mining site in Burkina Faso, we show that, contrary to what is often assumed, artisanal mines are not places of lawlessness. The mining site's organization depends on proximity-based governance structures even if the rules themselves are informal. However, these governing structures remain fragile and have various shortcomings, which limit the contributions that artisanal mining can make to territorial development. Operations are mostly focused on short-term profitability at the expense of social and environmental sustainability, resulting in dangerous and precarious working conditions. Consequently, these local forms of governance, which are shaped by both markets and traditional power structures, suffer from a lack of meaningful public policies that could accompany, as well as respect, the local regulatory mechanisms in place.

This article follows a reception study of the militant art exhibition “Témoigner pour Agir” (2017-2018). To better understand the social and subversive actions deployed by public testimonial in its artistic form, exhibition visitors' responses are put in dialogue with that of an exploratory conceptual analysis of three of the artworks presented. The analysis is based on feminist philosopher Sara Ahmed's theorizations of affect, a sociopolitical definition of emotions that allows for thinking about their role in the consolidation of social norms and inequalities as well as in their transformation. Making visible, shocking the public, and showing the way to inclusion and recognition appear as social actions with the potential to reach publics in a different way, i.e. against the current. Finally, the analysis of the intervention through artistic testimonials contributes to a broader reflection on the role of emotions in the field of social work.
