L’article examine la carrière littéraire de Guillaume Du Bartas concernant l’Écosse, la mer, Seconde Semaine et l’« Histoire de Jonas ». Du Bartas bouleversa en une quinzaine d’années le paysage poétique hérité de la Pléiade et l’élargit jusqu’aux limites de l’univers connu. Après La Sepmaine, qui conte la Création du monde en sept jours, il commença La Seconde Semaine, poème quadruple du précédent, dont chaque jour remplit quatre livres, et qui aurait dû conduire de l’Éden à l’Apocalypse. Mais Du Bartas mourut avant d’avoir pu achever son oeuvre monumentale. Le début de la Seconde Semaine, et plus précisément le livre de « Babilone », rend hommage à la reine Élisabeth d’Angleterre. À trois reprises, Les Suittes de la Seconde Semaine, qui viennent après, exaltent le jeune roi d’Écosse, Jacques VI, qui a accueilli Du Bartas à Édimbourg et qui aurait voulu le garder auprès de lui. L’« Histoire de Jonas », alerte, mobile, se conclut par un défilé traditionnel d’allégories. Sur ce cheminement épuisant de La Seconde Semaine, dont il composa, en près de vingt mille vers, quatre jours sur sept, de quatre livres chacun, le bref « Jonas » apparaît comme une éclaircie ou une pause, un repos de plus grand travail, en même temps que le souvenir très précis d’un voyage maritime agité, heureusement loin des guerres de Religion qui dévastaient alors la France.

This article examines the literary career of Guillaume Du Bartas concerning Scotland, the sea, Seconde Semaine, and “Histoire de Jonas.” All the same, in just fifteen years, Du Bartas succeeded in revolutionizing the poetic landscape inherited from the Pléiade, extending it to the limits of the known universe. After the Sepmaine, which recounts the Creation of the world in seven days, he began the Seconde Semaine, a poem four times the size of the earlier version, devoting four books to each day, and intended to include all of history from Eden to the Apocalypse. But Du Bartas died before he could complete his monumental work. The beginning of the Seconde Semaine, and in particular the book entitled “Babilone,” pays hommage to Queen Elizabeth of England. The Suittes de la Seconde Semaine, which came later, exalt the young king of Scotland, James VI, who received Du Bartas in Edinburgh and would have liked to keep him at his side. Clear-sighted and quick-paced, the “Histoire de Jonas” concludes with a traditional parade of allegories. Along the wearisome path of composing the Seconde Semaine, whose nearly twenty-thousand verses span only four days out of seven, each in four books, the shorter Jonas appears as a moment of clarity or a pause, a break from harder work, as well as the vivid memory of a turbulent sea-voyage, at a comfortable distance from the Wars of Religion then devastating France.

Joachim Du Bellay, a poet of contradiction, is known in his later verse for mastering a sculpted and “cold” style of writing. This article proposes that in conjunction with a unique typography and formatting of the poems in their first editions, catchwords (or réclames), seemingly isolated and fragmentary marks at the end of gatherings of signatures, punctuate the verse and, now and again, become a function of its force. Appearing as they do and where they do, catchwords invoke what poet René Char called a parole en archipel (words comprising an archipelago and of an originary calling), and what Maurice Blanchot referred to as a parole de fragment (speech of fragment) or a parole morcelée (shattered speech). Of uncommonly modern appeal, catchwords—intermediaries, unique spatial signs—are vital elements in the design, impact, and consequence of collections that run from L’Olive and the Recueil de poesie (1549) to Fédéric Morel’s handsome and carefully formatted editions of Le Premier livre des Antiquitez de Rome and Les Regrets (1558).

Translations and paraphrases of the Biblical psalms were popular throughout early modern Europe. The Latin poetic paraphrase of Psalm 51 by George Buchanan is examined alongside the Scots-language translation of Psalm 2 by Alexander Montgomerie to illustrate some of the complexities of the Renaissance interplay between Latin and vernacular translation, poetics, confession, and politics. Both poets engage with contemporary debates over the meaning of the Biblical texts, and both display a high degree of poetic and rhetorical sophistication in transforming the psalms according to their own interpretative commitments. Each demonstrates close attention towards and care for correct interpretation, and each shows a high degree of freedom in adapting and recreating the polysemous meanings of the original while also applying new meanings to serve their own liturgical, spiritual, and poetic purposes.

Les traductions et paraphrases des Psaumes furent populaires dans l’Europe de la première modernité. La paraphrase latine du Psaume 51 par George Buchanan et la traduction en scots du Psaume 2 par Alexander Montgomerie font l’objet d’une étude commune afin de mettre en lumière certaines particularités de l’interaction complexe entre traduction en latin et en langue vernaculaire, poétique, confession et politique à la Renaissance. Ces deux poètes prennent part aux débats contemporains sur l’exégèse des textes bibliques et font tous deux preuve d’un haut niveau de sophistication poétique et rhétorique dans la transformation des psaumes, en fonction de leurs propres postures interprétatives. Chacun d’entre eux manifeste une attention et un souci tout particuliers pour l’interprétation juste, et chacun adapte et rend les significations polysémiques du texte original avec beaucoup de liberté, tout en dégageant de nouvelles significations servant ses propres objectifs liturgiques, spirituels et poétiques.

This article explores the significance of the art of memory as a mnemonic poetics in Philip Sidney’s literary theory and practice. The art of memory is more than an ancient mnemonic method, I argue; rather, it constitutes a poetics that evolves from Plato to Petrarch as part of an interdisciplinary dialogue and debate about how the past is remembered (particularly through love stories) and remade in the present. This tradition of mnemonic poetics is central to Sidney’s portrayal of the art of poetry as an art of memory in his Apology for Poetry, a tradition that Sidney remembers anew in his sonnet sequence, Astrophil and Stella. Sidney constructs his poem as a memory theatre in which he demonstrates and indeed dramatizes the art of memory indirectly and ironically: through a poetic persona, Astrophil, who longs for an “art of forgetting” in his pursuit of originality.

Cet article s’intéresse à l’art de la mémoire comme une poétique mnémonique dans la théorie et la pratique littéraires de Philip Sidney. Nous avançons que, plus qu’une méthode mnémonique ancienne, l’art de la mémoire constitue une poétique qui évolue de Platon à Pétrarque au sein d’un dialogue et d’un débat interdisciplinaires sur la manière dont le passé est remémoré (notamment à travers les histoires d’amour) et réactivé dans le présent. Cette tradition d’une poétique mnémonique est centrale dans la représentation de l’art poétique comme art de la mémoire dans l’Apology for Poetry, tradition que Sidney fait renaître dans les sonnets d’Astrophil and Stella. This article explores youthful subjectivity in both dramatic and non-dramatic verse, considering representations of female youth in Shakespeare’s late romance Pericles alongside the work of poet and polemicist Rachel Speght. The complex, unstable category of youth contributes both to Shakespeare’s rendering of his fourteen-year-old female character in his play and to Speght’s portrayal of herself in her poetry. Shakespeare’s Marina narrates her own tale and reconstitutes narratives spun about her, creating space for youthful self-fashioning. Nineteen-year-old Speght undertakes a similar project of self-making in her prose treatises and particularly in her two published poems, “A Dreame” and Mortalities Memorandum. This article compares self-fashioning in the work of a young female writer to the construction of the young female self by a contemporary male writer, suggesting that youthful subjectivity inheres for both girls in principles of authorship and narrative authority.

Encouraged by the recent renewal of interest in the relationship between Milton and Shakespeare, this essay focuses on that relationship in the light of the tension between the literalism of sola scriptura in reformed religion, on the one hand, and the countervailing insistence on imitation as the route to originality and individual agency in the studia humanitatis, on the other. This tension is central to all Milton’s thinking; at its core is the question, “How are we to reconcile God’s freedom with our own?” While God’s freedom is absolute, we are nothing more than puppets “in the motions” unless we find a way to define the contingency of our own. Milton is intoxicated with the majesty of God’s freedom but equally haunted by the memory of our own original freedom: “No man who knows ought, can be so stupid [as] to deny that all men naturally were borne free, being the image and likeness of God himself.” By concentrating on Milton’s representation of Shakespeare in his “Epitaph” on Shakespeare (1632) and Eikonoklastes (1649), my argument is that not only is Milton’s engage­ment with Shakespeare ongoing but that it allows us peculiar insight into the poet’s conflicted desire both to create enhanced space for human agency and to critique its overestimation, especially in the idealization of political virtù.

Encouragé par le récent renouvellement d’intérêt pour la relation entre Milton et Shakespeare, cet article s’intéresse à cette relation à la lumière, d’une part, de la tension entre le littéralisme de la sola scriptura dans la religion réformée et, d’autre part, de l’insistance compensatrice sur l’imitation comme voie vers l’originalité et la capacité de l’individu à agir dans les studia humanitatis. The French, English, and Spanish wrote poems about the “New World” to represent it as known rather than unknown in the interpoetics of epistemic incorporation—to take the unknown of the Americas between and among these European cultures to make them known in terms of earlier knowledge. This article focuses on prefatory poems (paratext) and the main poem (text), and espe­cially the threshold between these poets, their interpoetics. It also focuses on beginnings as another threshold and moving across and on. To recognize the recognizable, anagnorisis within the known framework—that is what the texts of exploration and encounter, including poetry, tend to do—can involve misrecognition. Examining dedicatory poems, lyric, pageant, and epic, and how the known and the unknown work in the poetics of representation, this article argues that the interpoetics is between poems, between paratext and text, work and world, a mimesis that involves poems begetting other poems and representing reality.

Les Français, les Anglais et les Espagnols ont écrit des poèmes sur le « Nouveau Monde » pour le représenter comme connu plutôt qu’inconnu dans l’interpoétique de l’incorporation épistémique – soit prendre l’inconnu des Amériques entre et parmi ces cultures européennes pour les faire con­naître en termes de connaissances antérieures. Cet article se concentre sur les poèmes liminaires (le paratexte) et le poème central (le texte), et plus particulièrement sur le seuil entre ces poètes, leur interpoétique. Il porte également sur les commencements comme un autre seuil et les déplacements à travers ce seuil et au-delà, pour reconnaître le reconnaissable, une sorte d’anagnorisis dans le cadre connu – ce que les textes d’exploration et de rencontre, y compris la poésie, tendent à faire (et ceci peut impliquer une méconnaissance). Cet article examine différents genres poétiques (poèmes dédica­toires, lyriques, épiques et entrées royales) et les relations entre le connu et l’inconnu dans la poétique de la représentation pour montrer que cette interpoétique se situe entre les poèmes, entre le paratexte et le texte, l’oeuvre et le monde – une mimèsis impliquant des poèmes qui engendrent d’autres poèmes et qui représentent la réalité.

L’article étudie le sonnet dans sa dimension politique. Il établit une comparaison entre un poète ima­ginaire de la Renaissance, Guillaume du Vintrais, créé de toutes pièces par deux détenus de goulag, Youri Veynert et Yakov Kharon, et son célèbre prototype Clément Marot, poète français, humaniste et libertin, emprisonné et poursuivi en tant qu’adepte de la Réforme. Tous les deux, Guillaume du Vintrais et Clément Marot, choisissent la forme du sonnet afin d’exprimer leur idéal de liberté et dé­fendre la dignité humaine dans les conditions où toutes voix divergentes sont étouffées par le dogme. L’étude analyse la poétique subversive du poème amoureux dans les contextes sociaux et politiques en France dans les années 1530–1540 et en l’URSS dans les années 1930–1940. Malgré les quatre siècles qui séparent les deux époques, les règles de la joute qui oppose un oppresseur à un libre-penseur n’ont pas beaucoup changé.

This article discusses the political dimension of the sonnet form, establishing a comparison between the imaginary Renaissance poet, Guillaume du Vintrais – the fictional invention of two detainees in the Russian Gulag, Youri Veynert and Yakov Kharon – and his famous prototype, Clément Marot, a French poet, humanist, and libertine, who was persecuted and imprisoned as a supporter of the Reformation. Both Guillaume du Vintrais and Clément Marot choose the sonnet form to express their ideal of liberty and to defend human dignity in a context where all dissenting voices are stifled by reigning dogma. The article analyzes the subversive poetics of the love sonnet in the social and political conditions of France in the 1530s and in those of the USSR in the 1930s. In spite of the four intervening centuries, the rules of engagement governing the conflict between oppressor and free-thinker did not change much.
