2024 — Intergenerational continuity of child sexual abuse: A mixed methods study of risk and protective factorsRésumé
Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a prevalent traumatic experience worldwide. The negative effects of CSA can put children on a trajectory where they are likely to experience later abuse (revictimization) and to have children who may also experience sexual abuse (intergenerational continuity). Both theoretical and empirical research on CSA continuity is lacking. There are limited theoretical frameworks that have been developed to conceptualize intergenerational maltreatment, and more specifically to understand the reasons for intergenerational continuity of CSA. Additionally, there are few empirical studies that have specifically examined intergenerational cycles of CSA to identify distinguishing factors that can be targeted to … Lire la suite

2024 — Excitable Rho dynamics control cell shape and motility by sequentially activating ERM proteins and actomyosin contractilityRésumé
The migration of mammalian cells requires spatiotemporal regulation of protrusive and contractile cytoskeletal rearrangements that drive cell shape changes. The RhoGTPase protein family, namely Rho, Rac, and Cdc42, are key regulators of cell migration that act upstream of actin-based cytoskeletal changes. When unpolarized, single cells do not migrate directionally but exhibit rapid, random protrusion-retraction cycles to explore their environment. It is incompletely understood how Rho regulates these dynamic shape changes, and Rho has been reported to be active in both local cell protrusions and retractions. We aim to determine Rho’s contribution to unpolarized single cell movement in human umbilical vein … Lire la suite

2024 — Nutritional and Bioactive Properties of Canadian Faba Bean (Vicia faba L.) ProteinsRésumé

2024 — New Targeting Opportunities in Isocitrate Dehydrogenase (IDH)-Wildtype GlioblastomaRésumé

2024 — Quantifying consciousness in unresponsive patients through electroencephalography and perturbation.Résumé

2024 — A Radiomics-based Machine Learning Approach for Identification of Ischemic Cardiomyopathy in Oxygenation- Sensitive Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance ImagesRésumé

2024 — Predicting the influence of shear and lap splices on the seismic response of reinforced concrete bridgesRésumé
Many older reinforced concrete bridge columns contain poorly detailed transverse reinforcement and have lap splices in critical plastic hinge regions. These columns can fail in a brittle manner due to shear or bond distress when subjected to seismic loading. A large proportion of the bridges in Canada were built prior to the implementation of modern seismic design codes and are potentially in need of repair or retrofit. To evaluate the performance of these existing bridges and perform seismic risk assessments, a thorough understanding of the reversed-cyclic loading response of poorly detailed lap-spliced columns is required. An experimental program was conducted in … Lire la suite

2024 — Elucidating mechanisms of patterned Purkinje cell loss in Christianson syndrome ataxiaRésumé
An intriguing phenomenon occurs in many neurodegenerative diseases, where sub-populations of the same type of neurons have widely different responses to the same genetic insult: some survive, while others die. In the mammalian brain, one of the most vulnerable neuronal cell types are cerebellar Purkinje cells (PCs). In cerebellar ataxia, a motor coordination disorder characterized by cerebellar degeneration, PCs often show differential regional vulnerability. The mechanisms underpinning this selective neuronal vulnerability remain unclear but offer great promise for development of novel therapeutic approaches that tap into mechanisms of resilience across the mammalian brain. A characteristic pattern of anterior lobe cerebellar … Lire la suite

2024 — Efficient Octree-based 3 Dimensional PathfindingRésumé

2024 — Synthesis and applications of P-chiral molecules in the design of P-chiral Brønsted acids and ligands for asymmetric catalytic reactionsRésumé
Novel approaches towards the synthesis and applications of P-chiral molecules were investigated and applied in the design of P-chiral Brønsted acid organocatalysts. These catalysts were evaluated in the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of quinolines to tetrahydroquinolines. Among these substrates, the organocatalytic asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of deactivated quinolines was investigated for the first time. Additionally, these novel approaches were applied in the first enantiospecific phosphonylation of imidazoles via a solvent-switchable, site-selective, 1,4-palladium migration/C-H activation cascade. As a proof of concept of the utility of these compounds, the stereoretentive reduction of one phosphonyl imidazole product was achieved, leading to the first reported P-chiral … Lire la suite

2024 — Visualizing and exacerbating reactive oxygen species in live cells with activatable fluorophores and photosensitizers: Synthesis, mechanistic studies and theragnostic applicationsRésumé

2024 — The ins and outs of VIP interneuron plasticityRésumé
Although they make up only a subset of all cortical neurons, inhibitory interneurons (INs) play an important role in the function of cortical circuits. INs are diverse in morphology, electrophysiology, and molecular and synaptic properties. They are commonly classified based on the expression of molecular markers including parvalbumin (PV), somatostatin (SST), and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP). PV-expressing and SST-expressing IN types primarily inhibit excitatory pyramidal cell somas and dendrites, respectively. VIP-expressing INs, on the other hand, have a key disinhibitory role in cortical circuits by inhibiting other INs, namely PV-expressing basket cells (BCs) and SST-expressing Martinotti cells (MCs). Compared to … Lire la suite

2024 — Examining Precarity: A Study of Early Career Composers’ Professional Conditions in Aotearoa New ZealandRésumé
Many young contemporary music composers in Aotearoa New Zealand (hereafter “ANZ”) are experiencing financial instability and a lack of opportunities to develop their artistic skills and portfolio. The nation’s arts funding system and arts sector infrastructure have not kept up with the industry’s needs. Additionally, the broader neoliberal economic ideology which has permeated national politics since the 1980s exacerbates experiences of income, work, and lifestyle precarity amongst early career composers. I have interviewed five early career composers (hereafter “ECC”) from ANZ to document and investigate how they experience and navigate these precarious professional conditions. I contextualize these findings within international … Lire la suite

2024 — The Role of Cellular Senescence in Cardiac PathologyRésumé
2024 — Utilization of pedestal energy from pre-compressed pump pulse for high efficiency and enhanced tunability in soliton self-frequency shiftRésumé
The soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) phenomenon holds particular significance as it provides the opportunity to access the mid-infrared (MIR) (2-20 μm) spectral range, which has numerous applications in sensing and spectroscopy. SSFS is best observed with short pulse width; hence, a common approach to enhance SSFS involves the pre-compression of optical pulses prior to an SSFS stage. Higher-order soliton-effect compression involves the propagation of a higher-order soliton that results in a transitory temporal profile, which deviates from the ideal hyperbolic secant profile. This transitory temporal profile features a short main lobe, however, accompanied by side lobes, termed pedestal. There is … Lire la suite

2024 — New insights into LDLR regulation and trafficking: The interplay of non-lipid-related molecules with PCSK9.Résumé
PCSK9, the last member of the proprotein convertase family, is a serine protease that has been linked to familial hypercholesterolemia via targeting LDLR in hepatocytes. The degradation of LDLR occurs by two distinct pathways: an intracellular pathway that sends the complex of PCSK9 and LDLR to lysosomes directly from the trans-Golgi network (TGN), and an extracellular pathway that sorts this cell-surface complex to endosomes and then lysosomes for degradation. PCSK9 has a C-terminal Cysteine-His-Rich-Domain (CHRD) composed of 3 repeat domains M1, M2 and M3. The M2 domain does not bind the LDLR directly, but it is necessary for PCSK9’s extracellular … Lire la suite

This thesis examines the intricate nexus of state narratives, community dynamics, and governance within illicit economies by evaluating the results of criminalizing coca farming in coca-dominated regions in Bolivia and Peru, states with contrasting policies toward coca’s role in society. Bolivian President Evo Morales (2006-2019), recognizing coca as a critical mechanism of economic empowerment and a symbol of indigenous culture, implemented a top-down reform of Bolivia’s coca policy that permitted significant cultivation and domestic sales. Meanwhile, a series of Peruvian presidents maintained a security-first mindset regarding coca, bringing the state into conflict with local communities. The study compares the coca-dominated … Lire la suite

2024 — “Something more than a portrait”: Antoine Benoist’s wax sculpture in Louis XIV’s FranceRésumé
Nothing remains of Antoine Benoist’s Cercle royal, a display of life-scaled wax figures, bewigged and clothed, on view in Paris over the course of Louis XIV’s reign. Only one of Benoist’s wax fabrications survives, a profile relief depicting Louis XIV in old age (Chateau de Versailles, c.1705). This singular royal portrait has fascinated and confounded commentators for its seemingly irreverent depiction of the king’s scarred and wrinkled skin in the visceral particularity of polychrome wax. This dissertation examines the reception of Benoist’s waxworks, which were alternately celebrated as vivid miracles or derided as deceitful trivialities. The contested verisimilitude of Benoist’s … Lire la suite
